Hi Aran, I quite didn't understand how all of this helps if I want to have the secondary virtual cable for recorded videos. Meaning, I play Spotify for LIVE streams but another soundtrack is played in the archived video to avoid any copyright problems.

If anyone's having issues with this now: This is kinda out of date! Not in that it's wrong/broken, it still contains useful information, but in that OBS can now do a lot of this for you if you add "Application Audio Capture"s to your sources. However, virtual cables are notably still very useful when you want to have stream only audio, that you don't have to hear yourself.

Thank you for the tutorial! I set up the cable and it works but when I follow the steps fully (watched both videos) after setting it up it plays through both the cable and through desktop audio. I go into sound settings on windows to change the output but instead of going just through the cable it plays through both the cable and my desktop audio, so on stream it basically echo's. Is there a solution to this? Me and a friend both followed the steps and have the same issue. Any help would be appreciated! Edit: So I just figured out that if I use my headset as output device it plays through both channels, If I use my speakers as an output device it does indeed play through the cable

Thanks for this video, big thumb up. I have set my game output as VC and made it "listen" in my windows and routed it to my main sound device. So now I have 2 channels in my OBS: 1 is VC, which is enabled and use to record sound from the game, and 2nd channel is speakers (default sound device) which is playing both desktop sounds like youtube and the game. This channel is muted in OBS, So only the VC channel with the game is recorded. So everything works fine, but... when I turon on the game OBS VC channel doesn't "see" VC sound. In order to fix I need to switch in-game sound device from VC input to Speakers, then back to VC and then it works, but every time I need to do this when I open the game. Is there any way to fix it? I can also see that I have 2 sound devices in my PC: Speakers, and Digital Audio S/PDIF. Which one should I use and set as default?

Honestly don’t even need the VAC download, if you use Steam it comes with 2 “virtual audio cables” when you stream called steam streaming “___” 2 cables for free

I selected "listen to this device" in Windows and it sounded robotic. Is this an issue with sampling rates? When I tried to use OBS to monitor instead, there was no problem with the audio, but I didn't want to monitor using OBS as I didn't want to keep OBS on all the time.

In professional recording studios, outputs are generally placed on top and inputs are placed on the bottom of a patchbay, which is essentially a hub connecting all the studio's hardware. This is done because having an output placed directly on top of an input allows the patchbay to automatically route that output (of that piece of hardware) into the input (of another piece of hardware) without the use of using a physical cable. But you are right, in this case where they show the outputs and inputs of the same source, it makes no sense to have the output on top and input on the bottom lol

I'm hoping you might be able to help me. I've watched 3 of your videos covering this and am having a problem. I can get the spot going through the Virtual C and have it separated on OBS, but When I set windows recording to "Listen to this device" it not only allows me to hear it in my headphones but it also sends it out through Desktop Audio in OBS . Is there a way to prevent spot being sent over Desktop Audio and I still be able to monitor it, or am I basically forced to have multiple virtual cables?

Ok so this helped me understand OBS a little bit more but didn’t help my problem. I’m using a stream deck as a soundboard and voice changer but can’t get it to work properly. It will either play through my mic and soundboard option in Obs while even being muted or won’t play into my game. I have the trouble with my mic being muted and still echoing in game. I’ve been struggling for awhile now and am hoping you will be able to help, I’m new to this and can really use some help please and thank you

Using windows 11. All audio channels, Streamdeck and MIC, are adjustable in OBS except Desktop audio. It cannot be muted or adjusted in OBS. With the meter muted or on, there is a constant level to whatnot. I can only adjust in windows media player by turning down to 5 so my voice is above the music. How can I adjust within OBS?

So if I set Firefox to go through my virtual cable so that I can control it through OBS I can't run it through my audio interface when I'm not using OBS unless I go back in my sound settings and change it back once I'm done using OBS. Am I missing something or is that the only way to make this function?

Hey there, I am wanting to use something along these lines in order to record 2 mic inputs through an external audio mixer (Steinberg UR44) along with my computer audio (Spotify) all to record as separate tracks in Adobe Audition. Would this be the right way to go about it? I presume I would download cables A, B, C and assign A to mic 1, B to Mic 2, and C to Computer speaker output which I could then add as discrete tracks in Adobe Audition? I'm so lost please help :P

Ive been trying to troubleshoot this for hours now, whenever i switch the windows setting of an application to one of my audio cables, I lose the ability to hear it through my headphones. Thanks for the video. I'm a mac user, and I'm having some trouble with monitoring. Currently, I have Loopback audio installed (as well as Virtual Cables A & B) and I'm struggling to overcome the challenge of streaming music into zoom and being able to monitor the sound with hearing myself (delayed) in my headphones. I have desktop audio disabled as you suggested, and I have my Yeti Mic isolated as an independent input. OBS is set to monitor on Cable B and my Zoom microphone set on Cable B to capture everything coming out of OBS. I feel like I might be missing something easy. Hopefully someone understands what I am describing lol.

Great video! But this is still so confusing to me. I want a guest on my stream to be able to hear my desktop audio as well as my mic. I'm using Twitch Guest Star, and they can hear and see me just fine. But when I play RU-vid, for example, through a Browser source, they can't hear that. (But I hear it and it records in OBS output as well). I'm using Safford audio interface with a mic plugged into that. Someone recommended i use this download for my guests to hear my RU-vid audio, but I have no clue how to implement that for them via Twitch Guest Star once inset it up this way, or if it will even work. Thoughts? Or is there another way? Thank you!!

Can the OBS virtual audio cable show up as an output? Or is there a better solution? I'm trying to use OBS with Streamyard and it will only show the direct audio connections inside Streamyard and not the one running through OBS. I actually don't need any audio processing since I'm using my Rodecaster Pro to do that part but I need to add a sync delay of 250ms which is what I'm doing when I record directly in OBS.

I`m in Windows 10 and did everything like you said. The desktop channel opened and works fine but the problem I have is that my microphone channel is picking up the audio from my browser too. I`m also using a Motu M2 interface and I have tweaked everything I could from OBS and my mic channel is still picking up the browser. I don't know what else to do.

edit: im using a headset, but im not sure if that's relevant or not. So I've had audio issues before and I thought this would help but I still seem to be stuck. I've selected my headphones as my monitoring device, but even when my mic is muted audio will still show it us coming through my mic/aux input when monitoring. I've tried setting the playback through windows instead of OBS but the same thing happens. The result is a slight but noticeable echo that is present on stream and in recordings. (If I open a recording up and look a the audio tracks, I can see that my mix/aux is playing the same exact thing just a bit quieter.)

The problem is that when you're done recording, and close OBS, you won't hear spotify anymore because it's no longer outputting to anything except VAC-C. Is there an easier way than doing this and undoing it every time I record?

I have a phantom power behringer u-phoria um2, and a normal dynamic microphone, in the recording program I record only mono but not stereo, I use XLR cable mom and dad, I don't know where the problem would be?, I also want to hear myself live when I talk to someone on messenger or on discord or even on live radio programs, not just to choose in the recording programs, select channel 1 only on mono, I want stereo regardless of the setting.

Bro, I set my google chrome through virtual cable to be able to hear music from youtube by myself on headset and for my audience while streaming, it works perfectly, it seperated music to prevent copyright strikes from vod as intended, but now I can't set up my discord friends voices to go through streaming on obs. How do I do that? I tried with other virtual cable, but it's doesn't work this way. Because when I add audio output device, I can hear those discord voices from channel, but when playing music from youtube (which was set up to virtual cable to seperate sound preventing copyright strikes) this also plays on audio output device which is like meaningless.

Hi I'm having difficulty getting this right and I'm wondering if I have to have two VCs set up. Right now I have desktop audio set to my headphones, and desktop audio 2 set to the VC for Spotify. Now I have the monitoring turned on but I couldn't hear it in my headphones till I changed it in the sound control panel. However now i'm getting double audio. So i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You either want to monitor in windows or in OBS but not both.

I only have one audio cable and I cant seem to fix my issue. I have set my one cable to Opera GX in order to seperate it from the desktop audio. But in order to hear the browser myself (whenever I want to watch a youtube video or just simply want to hear the music I am playing in my streams myself) the audio also gets played in the desktop audio again which destroys the seperation. I know I could probably fix it with getting more cables but I was wondering if I can listen to the browser audio without having it going into the dektop audio again without buying more cables

I'm still struggling.. could someone help me here? My desktop audio isn't playing through my desktop speakers like it should be when I am recording in OBS. I'm using a MacBook.

How to listen to all audio sources when OBS is closed ? I can't hear spotify unless I open OBS.

I really wanna use this for fl studio to pick up on my audio interface so I can record into vcs with live effects and less latency but it’s so confusing
