Total Eclipse from atop Grand Teton!!! BEST Eclipse View EVER!

2 years ago I found out that there would be a Solar Eclipse on Aug 21, 2017; with the path of totality going right over Wyoming's Tetons range. I knew I had to see it from the top of Grand Teton! I convinced my family to make the trip and boy was it worth it!
It far surpassed all my expectations. Honestly, it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. And I think that the 50 other people on the Summit and I had the best view of the eclipse coming in the country!

This video is really awesome because from that high spot you can see the shadow around the landscape running towards you. Must have been an out of this world experience in person.

I was 17 or 18, when I climbed neighboring Mt. Moran......back in the summer of 1973. I ran into a couple of guys who were training for a climb of Mt Rainier ( on a lower part of the trail up ), and they were cool enough to let me tag along. A very steep hike to the top, but we didn't use any technical equipment, as far as I recall.

Highlands North Carolina. in a rain forest the eclipse was blocked by clouds, until the moon moved half past sun. we promptly threw our glasses onto our face. camping on an overgrown out of use logging road, we fought not with traffic. we slept in tents, we viewed the sky from the forest in a clearing. near a mountain paved road. three cars drove up, and left the lights on. "turn the lights off!!!!" i screamed. they did. when the light returned from behind the moon, they quickly drove off. while they, in traffic for eight to ten hours. we walked and talked in the forest, explored abandoned hoard houses, trapped in time swallowed by the mountain.

Darn, I was hoping you'd show the shadow of the moon moving away along the distant land. I understand that there wasn't a lot of opportunity to plan out what you'd record at each moment, though. I know there wasn't a lot of opportunity to set up anything like a 360 stationary view from that altitude. That's what I was really hoping for since before the eclipse.

You could have got the awesome shadow of the moon rapidly approaching but, instead just yanked the cell phone back and forth, showing pictures of other people looking at their own cell phones instead of the eclipse. Was anyone actually watching the eclipse or, everyone just looking at their cell phones?
@AdventuresToTheMax
@AdventuresToTheMax 7 лет назад
HVYMETL Actually, for most of the eclipse I wasn't even thinking about filming, I just held the camera on my chest and enjoyed it with my own eyes. That's why. I set up a timelapse with a different camera to get the shadow coming but it didn't turn out well
@barthchris1
@barthchris1 7 лет назад
Have you ever been to a total eclipse? Everything happens very fast when totality approaches. Even with the best intentions of documenting everything with a camera it suddenly becomes secondary to just soaking it in with your own eyes, the camera doesn't do justice to how the eclipse looks in real life.
@Jangle2007
@Jangle2007 7 лет назад
This was my first eclipse, I had photo gear and video ready to go as totality approached. When everything got dark, I was so shocked and disoriented with the sheer beauty of the event that I forgot EVERYTHING I had practiced. I left a video running on program and just observed the phenomenon. The video stinks but my memory is forever. Astonishing event.
@barthchris1
@barthchris1 7 лет назад
Yeah, I brought two Sony mirrorless cameras, one with a filtered long lens and one connected to a filtered telescope. Got everything set up and realized I left my camera batteries(not AAs') at home 500 miles away! Was left with with a "lowly" smartphone. Glad that happened though because I probably would have been to preoccupied taking on and off filters, changing settings, etc to enjoy.

Did you see the moon after it passed the sun?
@markw563
@markw563 7 лет назад
The Moon generally cannot be seen when it is within 10 degrees of the Sun. Because it would be a very thin crescent and in a low contrast part of the sky. It took roughly 2.5 hours for it to move the 1 degree from one side of the Sun to the other. So it should take about a day to get far enough from the Sun to be seen.
@StalePhish
@StalePhish 7 лет назад
You could not see the moon before nor after it passed the sun. All the sunlight was shining on the opposite side of the moon and any reflective light off the Earth was drowned out by the brightness of the sun itself. I did see some cool pictures some people took where you could see the details of the moon during totality, because of the light reflected off Earth was not being drowned out by the light from the sun
@ReactanceIsFutile
@ReactanceIsFutile 7 лет назад
I think one of the things that is important for people to note, is that this is one of the few times where people get to see the actual size of the moon in relationship to the Earth, and its distance from us (about 31 times the diameter of the Earth)... in this video at 5:47. It puts new perspective on what was actually accomplished by NASA and the Apollo missions.

I was thinking that, with this much effort to get there, someone would have brought a real video camera and a real DSLR instead of cell phone pics and video. For those of you who don't know better, the difference is vast. Compare identical scenes using a good DSLR vs any phone camera and look at them up close. Once you see what you're missing you just might realize it's worth the money to have a real camera for serious photography.
@AdventuresToTheMax
@AdventuresToTheMax 7 лет назад
Just Me This was filmed with a real camera. Not a high end one, but it's pretty good. LUMIX FZ-1000. Although during the eclipse I wasn't even thinking about filming for most of it, I just had the camera hanging around my neck filming
@need100k
@need100k 7 лет назад
Thanks for the response, I've climbed Half Dome back in the 90's (on the trail; not the face) with my SLR (DSLR's in their infancy and very expensive back then) and got some great photos. Being that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I think at least one person should have carried a decent DSLR with a long lens, appropriate filter and lightweight tripod to get some excellent quality photos. At least you should have brought a lightweight tripod for your Lumix. Shooting video of the eclipse by hand just wasn't good considering the effort that went into getting to the location. And doing so without proper filters risks serious damage to your camera as well. At least you all have the memory of being there, which is priceless.
@need100k

And, I might not have believed your video if it wasn't for the airplane contrail curving after the eclipse because I captured that on my video!!!
@SCGATOR2001
@SCGATOR2001 7 лет назад
I was in Gros Ventre campground until a couple of days before the eclipse. We had volunteered in Eastern Wyoming with the State Park at Glendo and I hated to leave but we had promised. We helped staff for several days before the eclipse and the morning of the eclipse about 5 am I had a staff member tell me to get down to parking, THOUSANDS of cars arrived before the gate was staffed. We parked what seemed like countless cars until they released us at 10 am (total was at 11:45). I put my camera on a distant ridge on the tripod to get the shadow approaching but it WAS FAST! Next time I will be on the highest point I can find to see the shadow approach. I was thinking if I had stayed in Gros Ventre I wanted to video the Teton Mountains as the shadow approached. But this video got it! Fantastic! I had seen one about 98% before but 100% is so much different. On to 2024. We also saw aircraft immediately after the total.
