Movie Endings Explained - TOTAL RECALL (1990) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paul Verhoeven sci-fi action
SUBSCRIBE for more JoBlo Original Videos HERE: goo.gl/R9U81J
Movie endings, they're usually pretty straight forward right? Everything pays off, the main characters learn something, and our heroes ride off into the sunset. Sometimes though, we don't get the typical ending from a movie, we get something much more nuanced, complex and open ended. The kind of endings that leave things up in the air for all of us to debate and theorise on until we're blue in the face. With Movie Endings Explained, we aim to delve into some of the more ambiguous and mysterious endings to films that have left audiences scratching their heads for years, and to attempt to explain them. In most cases, a definitive answer isn't really there, so we definitely want to hear from YOU on how you interpret the various endings we'll be discussing with this series.
This time we take a look at the 1990 sci-fi action classic TOTAL RECALL from director Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP, BASIC INSTINCT), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger (THE TERMINATOR, PREDATOR). The mind bending tale, based on a Philip K. Dick short story, sees the lead character Douglas Quaid recover lost memories of his undercover past, before ending up on Mars, kicking ass and quipping one liners at anyone who'll listen. A key plot point in TOTAL RECALL is the virtual reality memory facility that Quaid visits at the beginning of the movie, because by the film's conclusion, it could be reasoned that the entire movie after that point is part of the implanted memory. We delve into the reasons for and against the events of the film being the dreams of Quaid or the reality of Hauser, along with director Paul Verhoeven's recent statement on the debate!

I just noticed when the lab programming technician asks Quaid how he likes his women (demure, aggressive, wanton as shown on the screen), The "WANTON" option gets automatically selected followed by the "DEMURE" option BEFORE Arnold replies and BOTH get selected prior the "ego trip". Also, the lab assistant says something like "this is something new, blue skies" which reveals at the end of the movie when indeed the sky turns out to be blue. So, I now believe it is only a dream the moment he goes under at the Rekall laboratory sofa/chair.

as a kid I thought it was real. As I got older I see it was all a dream inside his head. notice when Arnold's character goes through the x-ray detector and it shows his gun but not the chip in his head. Also the amount of bullets he fires in that 1 clip is unrealistic when getting away on the subway. And the other stuff explained in this video like the woman he choose to be his girlfriend on mars is the same person etc. great movie, should have neve been remade.

It's paradoxical, there's is conclusive evidence for both sides. Melina can't be simultaneously in his dreams and 41A at Rekall. The only explanation that facilitates both ego-trip and reality would be if it was a regular dream from start to finish.

If it was all just a dream how do you explain Quaid's wife's insistence that he puts Mars out of his mind? Shes very persistent about it. When he suggests they move to Mars she suggests they go see the "Rings of Saturn". Later when he goes to Rekall the guy he talks to suggests a Saturn vacation package. Coincidence? And this is all before he even has the procedure done.

There may not be a "definitive" ending, but for the observant viewer, there is one answer which is better than the other. As someone below notes, the tech says "Blue Skies on Mars, that's new" and in the end of the dream there are blue skies on Mars. When they give Quaid a sedative it leaves a red needle mark on his neck. But when he "wakes up" and goes raging around Rekall, the red mark is gone. He isn't really awake. The Rekall salesman promises Quaid a stay in the luxurious Hilton Hotel which is where he stays in the dream, though there is absolutely no reason for a real secret agent to stay there. There is a scruffy Best Western Hotel right in Venusville where the real Hauser (there isn't one) would have stayed in his undercover role as a rebel in Venusville. When Dr. Edgemar comes into the dream to warn Quaid, he tells him that if he doesn't swallow the pill and shoots him, "The walls of reality will come crashing down...you will be Cohaagen's best buddy, .etc. etc." After Quaid shoots Edgemar, the walls literally crash down around him he finds out he is really Cohaagen's best buddy, and everything else Dr. Edgemar says will happen does happen. When this movie first begins, there is a certain scary music playing as Quaid's Mars dream ends. The same scary music plays as the movie ends implying that this has been a dream and that Quaid will indeed be lobotomized, as Dr. Edgemar warned.

My take: if it is a dream then it is a schizoid-embolism dream and not a Recall implant. Why? Imagine how much trouble Recall would get in selling that as an ego-trip. He would wake up hating his wife. If the memories feel real, then he wouldn't be able to be comfortable going back to her. "All is forgiven, it was just a dream - but it feels totally real..." God knows that when I wake up from a dream where weird things happen with real people, I have trouble dealing with the emotional repercussions, and that's a dream where the memory of it fades FAST. If they were selling ego-trips like that, they would be formulas for causing divorces, and they would get sued instantly. In short, they wouldn't do it. If the story somehow had simply gotten his wife out of the way, instead of having her be one of the "bad guys", then I could believe that it was all just the ego-trip. So, from my perspective, the more likely option is that it is real, though it could still be a schizoid-embolism dream, but it could not be a Recall implant dream.

There have been plenty of "it was all dream" stuff where the dream wasn't all from the dreamer's perspective. Verhoeven stated on the audio commentary the scene where he goes berserk saying "my name is not Quaid" was build in to make him think it's all real, same with all the scenes without Quaid they were all created to give the illusion that reality has never stopped.

the director said it could be both (even though he said in the dvd commentary before that that it was a dream) which is why there are small plotholes to you can use to justify either theory. basically the director put in hints that could support either so theres no *Right* answer which is kinda cool but at the same time sucks. even considering the book but still either theory is viable because both theories have small plotholes

Great film but my biggest problem is the dream of Melina at the beginning and the willingness to go to recall in the first place. This suggests that maybe it wasn't a dream and that as part of being undercover in the first place. Also the new memory 'blue sky on Mars' could of come from Cohaagen to set his initial memories off about the Aliens secret. Also the agency knew about Melina and most likely had her details on file as they couldn't get close their group as Kuato was a psychic like Cohaagen said. As for the metal detector and the bug, the scanners weren't picking up on small objects such as zips and necklaces when people were walking through so it's all up for interpretation but I like the idea of him saving Mars for real 😉

If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one and nothing around to hear it. Does it make a sound/noise? The answer is no. Sound is a wave that itself is not sound or noise. It only becomes a sound when the non-audible waves hit something that can turn those waves into a sound. So if there was literally nothing in the path or area of the tree falling for say a million miles, there would be no sound for that million miles, just waves waiting to be turned into a sound and heard. Do do do do do do do do

Another larger way of looking at it is: The movie begins with him dreaming to be on Mars with his dream girl. Then falls of a mountain and dies. The movie ends with him dreaming to be on Mars with his dream girl. Then falls of a mountain and lives. The movie is about how the dream sadventure goes horribly wrong and is taken over by the subconsciousness of Quaid. His mind then slowly takes it to where he wants to be.... saved on the side of this mountain with his Girlfriend by his side.

The "blue sky on Mars" ego trip is coincidental, but not as much when you realize he had a previous interest in Mars and most likely hand-picked the "blue sky on Mars" program. There's also the possibility that rumors of alien technology from the pyramid mines managed to make their way to Rekall employees who were tasked with writing a Mars program. So... In order for it to be reality, we have some unsettling coincidences. However, in order for it to be a dream, we have things beyond coincidence. It would be pointless for the Mars ego trip to contain a sequence where he wakes up as Hauser at Rekall only to have that part erased from his memory so Quaid never gets to experience it. If it is a dream, Quaid has no idea it happened, and Hauser and the lab techs are artificial. The audience would be experiencing something that nobody else experienced. It's just a little bit too far fetched for me to believe it was a dream.

Under the dream hypothesis I do have a theory over why he saw her in his dream in the opening scene: Maybe "Melina" was a very minor TV star who did a couple of TV commercials that Quaid saw. Then she starts showing up in his dreams and he conciously forgets where he originally saw her. And then, because she needs the cash, this minor TV star sells her likeness to Total Recall. And so it's just a bizarre coincidence that the girl of his dream is also the girl Total Recall gives him. So there are 3 theories: 1. It's all real. 2. It's all a dream. 3. It's both real and a dream at the same time. Of the three theories, I think 1 is the least likely. I think 2, while not perfect, is way more plausible than 1. But I suppose 3 is the most probable. It's such a great movie. It may actually be my favorite Schwartzenegger movie and I'm a big Terminator and Predator fan as well.

@iREZARECTEM
@iREZARECTEM 6 лет назад
+Alex Reindeer, not sure what you mean. Total Recall is defined as the ability to remember with clarity every detail of the events of one's life or of a particular event, object, or experience. IMO this suggests that his brain wash was disturbed by undergoing the Secret Agent holiday since the RECALL treatment seemed to have triggered his memory. On the other hand, the way the movie ended suggests he was about to wake up from the dream. ALSO: At the beginning of the movie, one of the white coats says "Blue Skies on Mars?" which is also shown as having come to pass at the end of the film.

I've got to say that the movie was written fairly well as far it's consistency of it possibly being a reality as well as a dream, but it's kind of sad to say that if we look at the logistics of its ending objectively it becomes pretty obvious that it's a dream simply because terraforming an entire planet isn't going to happen in just a matter of minutes like that and everyone would have died anyway. Audiences don't like sad endings we like happy wishful endings hence the sense of escape that fictional mediums seem to give us, therefore at the end of the movie we got the dream that mirrored a slight possibility of reality because we know on a subconscious level that truth is often stranger than fiction. However the experiences Douglas Qaad had were fiction. A dream to the audience but the new alternate reality to the character. As Arnie said, "It's the best mind fuck yet."

What if Total Recall the movie doesn't even exist? What if NONE of you have ever seen it and you just had the memory of it implanted into your head? THINK ABOUT THAT! The old DVD you have on your shelf is just a souvenir that Rekall gave you.

To me the "reality hypothesis" doesn't ad up. Why would Dr. Edgemar travel to Mars, just to convince him to swallow the red pill? Why would Richter and his goons try to kill him if Quaid/Hauser really works for Cohaagen? How could Cohaagen predict that he would befriend the taxi driver on Mars and lead them to Kuato? Why does Lori only try to kill him once he's been to Rekall even though she can't possibly know he was there? Why does Harry try to kill him even though he also couldn't have known that he had been to Rekall? The movie only ads up if you assume that the events are taking place within Quaid's "ego trip".

I thought it was a dream because as you pointed out, the characters explain the whole movie in one line before he goes in. Also because of that ending, where the sun appears to cast a bright light as if he is finally going to wake up. But some parts do make it confusing, perhaps poor writing, or it was intended for the viewer to have doubts. I Suppose if you go in knowing that it was all a dream maybe you wouldnt care as much. my 2 cents.
@borgpunk
@borgpunk 6 лет назад
If it was a dream the bright light is a symbol of him being lobotomized (Explained in the directors comments) Since it was all ment to either end there, or be continued with a sequel, then its not because of poor writing, but simply because both realities was kept alive. all arguments for it being a dram, can also be used as an argument for it being real.

I think it's real because you can see how when they got in the apartment and tried to convince him that this is a dream it was obvious that they tried to manipulate him and that it was a coincidence. He dreamt about the girl he loved before and his wife tried to see who does he dream of.

@lordoftheflings

Think about it. The guy at total recall said "Your brain won't be able to tell the difference!" If he just woke up in the Total Recall chair after the adventure, he would know that it wasn't real. He would be like, oh right, it was just a dream I'm here at total recall. For to seem real it had to seem like Total Recall DIDNT implant him. Like whats happening is real. If he had memory of him going under, and then waking up in the total recall chair after his dream, that would be quiet disappointing indeed. That would be just be like a regular dream we have when we're sleeping. Because we then wake up in our beds, we know the dream was just a dream.

This movie has a complicated plot, I saw it many times over because of confusing bits, with the impression that it was NOT a dream from where Quaid goes to Rekall; nevertheless I wondered, what if Quaid HAD taken the red pill, like a precursor to the Matrix? For many years a sequel was in the pipeline, but if they had made one they might have had to confirm whether the events after Rekall are real or a dream, and as this vid explains, the creators deliberately left it open to interpretation

In a dream everything is possible. Its even possible to dream this things, and then dream that you didnt dream it the next moment. Also, there is plenty of examples of this in other films, in the Wizard of Os, there is also scenes without Dorothy Gale.
@Anfimus
@Anfimus Год назад
Why does he have to be on screen every moment for it to still be a dream?
@ZarkAttack
@ZarkAttack Год назад
@@Anfimus because that's the nature of the dream experiences that Recall create; they implant memories that are so real that the customer will view them as real events. This would not include having a cut away moment where Doug, who isn't there, somehow sees the bad guys scheming in Cohagen's office....for these events to be believable memories for the customer, they would need to be present in said events. Likewise, if you want the viewer to question whether you are seeing real events or one of these implanted experiences, it should be told consistently from one perspective. So these aren't just dreams, they are implanted memories. Anything can happen in a dream, but Recall is a company that creates controlled, believable experiences that would be shattered by these scenes.

I can't believe loads of science nerds haven't nailed you in the comments. This isn't anything like Schrodinger's cat! If Paul Verhoeven had made 2 final edits, one where it's a dream and one where it was real, and saved the 1 copy of them on 2 identical reels and put them in a box which caught on fire, and when he opens them one is still playable; if you asked Paul at this point what the end of the movie was, then he wouldn't know until he played the tape to see. So he'd have to say the movie is and isn't a dream at that point. That is more like Schrodinger's cat.

The ending of this movie didn't felt amiguous to me. There was more evidence that the protagonist is in a dream and things just kept happening that distracted him from realizing it. when he got a breather at the end he even got to the conclusion that this jurney was kind of fantastical, conquerinv his delusion with logic and possibly waking up from it or collapsing his mind as the doc said he would. The only thing that didn't fit was his dreams of mars and the girl he didn't suppose to meet yet. But I think there is a hint to an explanation to that as well. Our hero reacts badly to memory manipulation. The ego trip is a new invention, so far clients could only go to a vacation in their mind as themselves to these exotic places. The heroine is one of the prebuilt companions. When the memory implantation goes haywire the staff deletes the memory of the client's stay and send him home. So Quade was at one of the shops of Rekall before; his Mars trip turned into a nightmare; they partially erased his memory so he kept dreaming about it. Quade has an unfulfilling job and a failing marriage topped of with a sensitive brain.
@Vagolyk

Everyone wonders how he dreams of the woman before recall? Well you do understand that Melina is also the news anchor in reality right. Also i believe that whole part where he freak at recall, is also indeed part of the dream, the directors wanted this movie to be open for debate since its conception. So tell me how would you have the dream start? With him waking up in a bed? Also for those who mention the scens without quad. Imagine how terrible this movie would be with out the substance people....yes i get it this movie is suppose to analysed and no detail can be over looked. But come on thats substance you need that either way for the audiences own motivation in the story! Lastly the blue sky on mars, the technician litterally spoils the last shot of movie with that line. Also the sales man at the begining lays the whole dream out from begining to end. Im not sure how much more proof you guys need.
