Total War: Shogun 2 - A Retrospective Review

The Shogun Series really benefits from its simplicity. By having one unique culture (i.e. similar units), and straightforward building system, it gave the AI less to try and manage. The AI seems a lot smarter/better, but that is greatly a part of the reduced amounting of 'thinking' it has to do. The simplicity also aided the AI by restricting what you could do to confuse/overwhelm it. I love the Shogun games because they keep you on a fairly level footing with the AI for much longer than other games do - let alone to mention the whole Realm Divide feature, which is one of the best aspects I've seen in any total war game that keeps the challenge going right to the end of the campaign!

This has been a really enjoyable retrospective series. Very in-depth but also concise when it comes to describing what makes or breaks the Total War games. While Rome 1 will always be my favorite, it’s hard to disagree that Shogun 2 is definitely CA’s best, most polished game.

You should continue doing the retrospective reviews, Rome 2, Attila etc. More people are playing that and will watch reviews .. like I wanted to watch an empire review and now I've watched all the retrospective and some of the other videos

I agree with your opinion that Shogun 2 is the best Total War title all things considered. It is hard for me to compare it to Warhammer, but definitely the best when considering historical titles. Excellent review sir and great points

GOD TIER TW, for me best also, second place medivial 2, i like ATILa TW , but game has flaws , comapre battles to shogun , so much better landscape in Shogun 2, mountains hills , forests , map feel so big in batle i atila map is so smalll same as Rome 2 , also i agree with you it is most agreisve and best campaing AI , i am just finishing major victory on legendary with ERE in ATila , and i must say, yes start isnt easy etc, but it s much easier to win legendary on ATila nor shogun 2, in shogun 2 ai is unforgiving if you make mistake hah, nice review bro , saw this post on reddit, keep it up,.

I saw you didn't mention mods that need in Shogun 2 to make the game more enjoyable like previous videos about Empire TW or Napoleon TW. So I guess Shogun 2 is one of the very fews Total War games that can be fully enjoyed and played for years without using mods?

I think Shogun 2 is one of the best games ever made.

I find Rome II to be the best total war, because it was probably what Rome I was in 2004. (I wasn't there at the release, I'm only 15 years old and I know that Rome II had a buggy start.) It made me love the series. Shogun II is maybe slightly better than Rome II, but it hasn't that nostalgic feeling of an 13 year old kid trying to defeat the computer. If you don't agree with my opinion, think of Rome I, then you'll understand my feeling for Rome II.
