Napoleon: Total War - A Retrospective Review

In this video, I will be tackling another somewhat controversial Total War release - Napoleon: Total War. Does it deserve to stand on its own, or should it have been a mere add-on to Empire? Perhaps Napoleon: Total War deserves more appreciation for what it brought to the series and how its development helped to shape one of the greatest, most polished Total War releases of all time - Total War: Shogun 2.

My first Total War,the Italian Campaign will always have a place in my heart! I remember going to the CiberCafe with my friends and playing it while they played CounterStrike(i guess i have to thank my terrible shooter abilities for my love of TW)

I remember starting up Napoleon Total War for the first time (Italian campaign) and thinking... wow, this looks, feels, and sounds so much better than Empire. A much more atmospheric game - I like NTW very much. Unfortunately, its replayability suffers a bit due to the rather limited nature of the campaign/battles, but I still like it a lot nonetheless.

Love these! You can understand CA going from Medieval 2 to Empire (head of AI left and no one knew what was going on, new Engine, new style of warfare, and huge scale). However, how CA went from Shogun 2 (imo the pinnacle of combat and solid fundamentals in TW) to Rome 2 is beyond me. Reminds me of when DICE went from BF3 to BF4 (dont know if youve played those games).

I think they should've added the ability to add ntw options to etw. Diplomacy and new ship models especially.

Definitely, Napoleon made so many improvements that should have been ported to Empire... the atmosphere being one of them...

Making the post settlement options to loot, occupy or liberate available in etw would have been lovely.

I really enjoyed the overarching focus that the 'character' style total war games brought. Sometimes in other TW games, you just go through the motions of that classic empire builder and it can feel all a bit the same. Having an objective other than the classic empire-building was a refreshing change in my view. Making choices to deliberately stop Napoleon, or conversely making choices to follow in his footsteps, gave the game an extra layer of depth. Good work on the reviews though! Really bringing up some nostalgic memories for me

Definitely. I like the character story driven total wars quite a bit, and they are actually good for total war beginners to learn the main aspects of the game while bring pretty much guided. I consider Napoleon to be one of the best Total Wars for beginners- I've gotten some friends into the series using it after failing with Shogun 2 and Medieval 2. It's also the first total war with a multiplayer campaign, which I consider to be one of the most fun modes in the newer titles (can't wait for Troy to get it).

On the topic of sameness, its simply because of the period. id say it adds to the game. linear warfare is specific interest. games like war of rights represents this era of warfare the best.

I'm still Waiting for Total War: A House Divided, or Total War : Brother against Brother or whatever title they want to give to an American Civil War TW, title.

American Civil War is probably too controversial for a TW release unfortunately. Would love a Victorian (like Victoria 2 but its Total War) or WW1 game though.

@@Bu11yMagu1re I don't think TW engine is good to handle a WWI game. Modern warfare tactics is way too different from the units blocks and formations total war uses.

Napoleon was a step up from Empire in some respects: More regions in France and Spain, Historical accuracy in Uniforms, Easier to move Ministers around, and being able to repair your ships in the midst of battle.

Hey hey, I've got a question - I'm doing a personal project right now where I'm playing through all sorts of games I was interested in, but passed up on in the past when they originally released and I just got around to finishing what I missed in the Total War series - I wanted to ask which one people would recommend more: Medieval 2, or Napoleon?
@GudeaTW
@GudeaTW 2 года назад
Hmm they are very different games, hard to compare. I really enjoy both - do you like to play vanilla or with mods? Vanilla, I'd say Napoleon for sure, but if you want to play with mods then Medieval 2 is the right choice.
@HansAlRachid
@HansAlRachid 2 года назад
@@GudeaTW Yeah, as far as I can tell I sort of skipped games at complete random back then, that's why I'm torn between such wildly different games now. I tend to prefer playing vanilla all in all and only really play mods when I get back to a game after a long pause, so I think I'll give Napoleon a shot next, then. Thank you very much for the feedback!

Useful observations which I generally agree with. It is after all called NapoleonTW, so unsurprisingly this is THE faction with the most satisfying single player campaign play. A pity there is no way to turn off the historical diplomacy but I suppose *sigh* that's what the ghastly unoptimized ETW is for.

I found Darthmod Napoleon to be a bit too grindy for me in terms of the battle gameplay, though I did really enjoy the effects. I found I quite enjoyed the TROM 2 mod - I made a review of it on the channel a few months back. I don't dislike Darthmod Napoleon, it just isn't for me.

What really infuriates me about vanilla Napoleon is the cheating campaign AI...or maybe I'm just bad at the game:P But I was playing as Prussia on hard difficulty and France is just spawning armies and farting out super experience units out of nowhere. I have been fighting in Germany and liberating the Netherlands and Belgium. And have currently defeated two large french armies in Bavaria. All my armies are exhausted and my economy is pushed to the max supporing 3 huge armies. But out of nowhere on the french border 2 brand new super experienced fully stacked french armies suddenly appear. Either the AI must be drowning in debt or they can't go bankrupt at all. Or are simply spawing armies out of nowhere.

Gentlesir PancakeBottoms another thing that annoys me in NTW, and which isn’t mentioned in this video, is the fucking rebels when taking a capital of a major nation. Unless you have a full army of militias that can give lots of repression to the city nobles or lower class, you have 3 exp armies popping in less than 5 turns in the capital region. France literally has 2 army composed of 4 12lb, 6 dragoon’s and 20 line infantry + a smaller force like that, and they all have 3 exp and full amount of soldiers, yet still labeled "rebels"
@gentlesirpancakebottoms6692
@gentlesirpancakebottoms6692 3 года назад
@@gabinchorein-parisot3255 Yup. The rebels are too organized and at least should spawn as royalist armies allied to the coalition or something. Or there could have been different rebel faction armies which are also fighting each other
