I don't know what possessed you to create so detailed a video, but it was exactly what I needed to see to fix our toilet. (All I needed was a replacement gasket, and our neighborhood plumbing company was kind enough to give me just that one part.) I can only hope to pay my debt to you forward in some way. The world is a better place because of sharing souls like yourself. I salute you, sir.

Thank you so much for this video. I was having issues with the water flow "pulsing" when refilling the tank, and after watching your video and inspecting my fill valve, it looks like the diaphragm cap had simply degraded. Cost me just $3.25 for a new part and you saved me over $100 vs hiring a plumber!

Thanks so much--this was so very helpful! Always nice to see someone actually working their way through a project and all the glitches encountered and how you worked your way around them. Knowing I could take the flush valve cap off to see the float itself and how it was behaving helped me to set the height of the flush valve so that it wouldn't keep running and running. Turned out to be an easy fix! Seriously, many thanks!

A Million thanks for this detailed and well shot video! We have the exact fill valve you worked with in the video (which had been making an annoying hissing sound) and you saved us time, effort and and a boatload of money with your demonstration. I will most definitely pay your kindness forward! Thank you, again!

Thanks. Although the video could use some editing for time, it was really helpful. My Toto tank was sputtering every time it refilled. Thanks to this video, I was able to disassemble/reassemble the valve and solve the problem simply by cleaning the components. This saved us a lot of money, will make us stop worrying, and my wife will think I'm a hero.

Thank you so much for this! My problem was sometimes it wouldn't fill with water. Got that cap with the red rubber valve for $4 and fixed it. Much less hassle than changing out the entire filler valve.... and much cheaper.

Thanks for doing this video. I learned a lot! I had to fortify myself with a martini, haha, but I completed every step. No, it didn't solve the hissing noise in my toilet that indicates that there is a leak. But it gave me confidence that I can replace the dang fill valve with a new one. Your effort was well worth it! Thanks again.

After a few years of similar servicing, and replacing $9 caps (the $5 rubber flap rarely solved it), I’ve learned to spend the $10 ($9.98 at Amazon as I type) and 15 minutes to just replace the entire unit. Every 5-7 years I replace each one, if it isn’t leaking before.

Dude! I have spent 4 months turning the water off after ever bowl refilled because my water bill uncreased SEVERAL HUNDRED dollars in a month due to a super quiet overflow issue. I had replaced the flapper gasket and that didn’t work. The toilet and its guts are only 4 years old so I knew something needed cleaned I didn’t have to replace the whole piece. THANK YOU! I have a followup question. I cleaned all parts. Flush was quiet but after a week became even louder. There is a hissing/whining noise when the tank is filling. Is this a symptom that the noise reducer needs to be replaced? Or something else? Should I just replace the whole unit? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you for such a detailed repair video. However, the rubber padbon the float arm is key. If it has deteriorated, as mine had, the fix still won't work, as you discovered. It would check this first. I replaced the gasket and it was still not shutting off so I gently popped mine out that little pad and turned it over...problem fixed. It may appear a bit crumbly on the surface but the underside was still solid. Down the road I'll have to replace it too, but it works.

I missed removing the float ball on the video.. I've replaced the fill gasket and the toilet is still hissing. What's the purpose of the ball? Could it be the float ball that isn't seating that's causing the slight opening of the valve, hence the hissing? Oh, and great video. A tripod or head mount would help the viewers and speed up the video.

That is my exact toilet and fill valve. My problem is the opposite, the toilet wouldn't fill. I wiggled the blue cap and it started working again. I'll take a closer look at it when I get home. Ditto here. Mine just needed cleaning. My fill valve would delay before filling. We'd flush and then hear silence for a few seconds. Then the fill valve would start to work. The key for me was knowing how to remove the diaphragm cap after removing the blue cover. Next was cleaning the filter which I have done on another Toto very successfully. Once I cleaned my filter and a little coating of slime (well water) from my rubber diaphragm and the tiny hole, that did the trick for me.

It's always good practice to apply clear plumbers grease to the rubber components. This will lubricate but also provide a barrier to the chlorine in the water which attacks the rubber.
@houstontexas9463

You don't even need to do all this to fix your issue.. Leave the water on while doing this and you'll know where your problem is once it starts filling (sucking again).

I love this video and this guy and this channel. However I think I snapped the hose I have a very similar unit called the antisiphone. It looks exactly the same. Anyways I looked and there didn’t seem to be a mechanism that actually connects the hose other than plastic. I barely moved mine however which may mean it needs replacing anyways. Puddly thing..

Thank you! My issue was that water would not shut off automatically and kept going into the overflow then to the toilet below. I have a fairly new unit. After removing the plastic top and the plastic lever, I saw sediment in the small reservoir and no water coming in to push the lever up. All I needed to do was to clean the reservoir and the ball to let water in to push up the lever to stop the water intake.

turn off the water and do what you need to do.. if you call a plumber they will turn it and get it out for $200. if you have the water off and break it, you can buy replacement parts at the store- or you can pay someone to use brute force and break it and then put in the same parts

Helpful video even if you did not solve your given problem. My problem was the opposite of yours in that my valve was shutting off too soon. After watching some of the difficulty you encountered I decided, knowing sod's law, that I would likely break something if I tried to fix the unit within the tank. I therefore replaced it for a spare fluid master unit. I then attempted to fix the unit, following your video, in the hope of reusing it at some point in the future. It was difficult to remove many of the components even with it out of the tank, so good job on your part. Also, I would never have found the little hole on top as you pointed out. Good job

Thanks for the helpful video. It took about 20 minutes to fix. My toilet would start filling about 1 to 2 minutes after each flush and then fill very slowly. It turns out that there was sediment in the white comblike filter. That slowed the water drain to initiate the filling cycle. Although the video was long, it saved me time/frustration/uncertainty during the repair since I'm a newbie at this stuff. I didn't even try removing the flexible tube. Saved money and time since I didn't have to go to the store, replace the fill valve, mop the floor, and recalibrate.

Nice job on the video, appreciate it. I've worked on all different brands of fill valves before, but this was my first time working on a Toto. Spending some time watching your video told me exactly what I needed to know before tearing into a Toto fill valve. Armed with your info and new parts, it took me a whole.....10 minutes to basically rebuild my Toto fill valve. Only thing I would add, removing the flush lever is quick and simple. After you do, gives you just a little bit more working room.

Good video and you put a lot of time and effort into it. Thanks! But I think it goes a little too far, to the point where the unit can not be repaired without going much deeper. At 11:55 where the "diaphragm seat" "noise reduction / filter" tube is removed, I advise not to remove this tube! Mine came out and was a snug fit, but when I put it back in, it was a very loose fit. Like his experience, I was not able to repair my fill valve. My diagnosis was that now water was able to flow between the skinner inner filter tube and the outer tube it slides into. This was born out when I replaced the entire fill valve with a new and identical Korky unit. When I unthreaded the bottom fitting to the supply line, a little O-ring and ~5/8" long plastic spacer fell out. These parts are needed to seal the inner tube to the outer tube and fell out and dropped to the bottom when I pulled the two apart. I advise: Don't remove this tube! The diaphragm in this video should not be sitting on top of the diaphragm seat. It should be a tight fit in the top of the cap that fits onto the diaphragm seat. the little hole he clears with a paperclip is part of a pilot valve. The other part of the pilot valve is the little rubber pad in the arm of the float chamber. It can be removed and turned over to expose a fresh surface. I did it with mine. When the pilot valve closes, the little bit of water coming out of pilot valve builds up pressure on the back side of the diaphragm and closes of the water supply to the toilet tank. If the pilot valve can not close, or if there is another leak elsewhere, pressure behind the diaphragm can not build up to close off the water flow to the tank. Korky makes the kit that replaces the diaphragm assembly and it also fits the Toto GMAX / Hunter / Korky unit. These fill valves are very common, inexpensive and work well in my opinion. My 2¢ worth...

I know others have already thanked you... but THANK YOU, again. My problem was a "gulping/screeching sound" when refilling the tank after the flush. I thought I had to replace the whole fill value so I bought one for $26 at the local plumbing. Got home and realized my style Toto makes it virtually impossible to unscrew the nut as there's almost no access. I think I would have to remove the whole toilet! Anyways, I carefully watched your video. There was some build up and a small metal piece in the filter. I just flushed 3 times and seems to have done the trick. I really appreciate all the detail and the patience in making the video and this saved my from hiring a plumber, and I can return the $26 replacement.

If it's just the diaphragm that's bad, you can buy a Korky replacement diaphragm assembly (includes housing cover and rubber diaphragm) at Home Depot for $3.75. Fits perfectly in the Toto fill tube, and takes 60 seconds to install.

Learningcords I have nothing except my old American standard to compare it to, but I thought it had more flushing power than that old thing & it definitely fills up faster. The plumber installed this one. I did not do any research on toilets beforehand like I usually do on some purchases. With more negative responses on either the toilet or the fill valve, which specific toilet do you know to be significantly better? Thanks.

My fill valve quit working, wouldn't fill at all. I took it apart per this video, and I didn't see any major debris. But it worked normally after I reassembled everything. Thanks for posting this video.

Thanks for the detailed video. I got mine apart in less than 10 min. Unfortunately my rubber gasket was shot so ended upon having to get a replacement. The Korky Quiet Fill Platinum works just fine with a Toto ST784S toilet. Also picked up the Toto Universal flapper by Korky as my flapper was in sad shape. All good now!

My toilet would not fill after my well ran dry and sediment got into my water supply. Your video, painful though it was to watch, made it possible for me to clean out the Toto valve. I could never have figured it out myself. Thanks!
