In this video I'll show you how to install and configure the touchscreen as well as setup SunVox to automatically start when you boot up the Raspberry Pi. This will make it seem more like a single-use appliance, yet have the background power of the Pi that can be further customized at any time.

Overall I am very happy with the results considering how cheap this screen was. I think if I could choose again, I'd go with a 7" model just to have a little more space. But ideally, the screen is there only for visuals. Once you have SunVox customized the way you want, you technically wouldn't even need to use a screen after you've set your MIDI mappings and instrument modules.

Hi, thanks a lot for your vids, they're putting me back on track with my Pi... I'm a bit of an advanced computer user, bioinformatics and the like, but I remain refractory to programming anything, even music, you could say 'I don't know Jack about it...' Ha ha, get the... never mind... Anyways, got my Github account and my Pi running on Raspbian and making basic sounds, almost ready to see if I can get my Roland VG99 to play something with SunVox... if I have any reasonably intelligent questions I'll be sure to bug ya... for now, just thanks again, and you have a wonderful day too! This looks VERY promising for my project!! Sad you have not done a video like this with the newer pi boards that are more powerful and more ram. And with a 7" touch screen(basically the hardware being sold in 2021 at Raspberrypi.org)

The lightning symbol on the screen shows your Pi is under-powered.

Michael Perry indeed and thanks for your comment. Since then I have switched to a 2000mAH power supply and it seems to have eliminated that little guy from popping up.

Just to add some more feedback and info: i’m gonna use raspberry pi 2 with sunvox and 5 inch display. For pi 2 with display ,mouse and wifi acess point i used 2.1 A usb power supply, it worked without issues. Pi 3 is more power hungry, it needs at least 2.5 A. If power supply is good and provides enough current, you dont need to connect lcd screen to Pi3 via usb , as display will take 5v from GPIO pins. If power is not enough, it’s better to connect display to another power supply. For pi 3 this can be necessary, for pi 2 - i’ll make few more tests after adding midi keyboard and DAC

My 5 inch LCD must have come broken. Everyone just plugs their unit into the raspberry and a screen shows. Mine just shows a blue screen reading something about no signal. My luck, 1 out of 50 million, and I get the defective screen.

I’ve got a similar setup, I’m considering changing my screen layout 90 degrees to get more vertical room (it looks good in SunVox)

Interesting! I bet that stacking the modules vertically would indeed look nice. I'll have to give that a try sometime. This 5" deal ain't too bad. I think I'll have a better idea on how well it works once I get it mounted in a box of some sort. My goal is to hopefully "set it and forget it" and not really need the screen much at all other than to make sure the dang thing turns on properly. Either way, I didn't really want to shell out the $70 for the official touchscreen, so I think this is a decent alternative for the time being. We'll see how long it lasts!
