Looks like it was stripped of stain and that maybe the original shellac was tinted. On furnitur, I only had to buff the shellac by hand with a high grit scotch pad or 0000 steel wool. Never have I needed a power buffer. A coat on the polished shellac will give a glassy surface. Why not completely strip the top?

Have you ever stripped and refinishes a whole top? Its a lot of work. Besides, it ruins the guitars battle scars completely. The point is to protect the wood.

@@DrewsGuitarShop I have not done a guitar before. Guess I missed the fact that you wanted to keep the battle scars on it.

Ok, so there is raised wood! Fascinating! The process of repairing varnish on a painting is generally complete removal with a solvent, then a new layer. But then, UV damage and air grime is much different than skin oils and pick damage. I assume your varnish is self-leveling, so i imagine it doesn’t matter too much if you have brush marks.

The shellac tends to soak into the wood and thus doesn't leave a whole lot that could be unleveled. That said, if you get a little edge of it on the finish around where you are touching it up, naphtha and guitar polish will generally even it out. Its one of the reasons I love this method, its just pretty idiot proof in terms of mistakes you could make and looks great.

Shellac is shellac. It's bug stuff in alcohol.

You blocked the view of the brush work with your hand. It's a visual medium. You should have considered that people wanted to see what you were doing.

It was not really difficult to figure out. Not like he was standing behind a curtain doing it.

Maybe he's 9575's brother-in-law? His hand blocked the whole application.
