Basler Turbo Conversions in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is one of the only companies in the world that converts piston-engine DC-3s into turbine-powered aircraft. Tour the facility as Basler President Randy Myers gives a history of the company and breaks down exactly what goes into converting these rugged, tough DC-3s into even tougher Basler BT-67s. In addition, get an inside look at the restoration of the Commemorate Air Force’s C-47 That’s All, Brother, the lead airplane in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, which is being undertaken by Basler at its Oshkosh base.

My dad was an instructor in C-47s at Pope Field. He may have flown 'That's all Brother...'. I think it was parked near the Cessna 195s at Oshkosh in 2009. I walked around it and wondered...

Better turboprop DC3's than no DC3's. Besides, the props preserve a lot of the sound. The newest R-1830 has to be 50-60 years old. To me, it's great that all the good things about DC3's are not just preserved, but improved. One thing I don't understand, though is why the tailwheel is not made retractable. Seems like that would improve cruise performance appreciably. Still, an 85 knot [nearly 100 mph] increase in cruise speed is not bad at all. You end up with a quieter, smoother, faster and safer DC3. What's not to like?

I was an avionics tech that spent a fair bit of time with Baslers (We called them Bedazzlers), I think very highly of them but that sound can't touch a radial... five blade props sound different too. They do get a lot attention still though.

Awesome to see a bit of what you are doing for such an incredible aircraft. Who's giving this vid thumbs down, hardcore radial fans? ;)

Why do you change the wingtips? Wasn't there a South African company that used to do the same PT6 conversion?

Like Randy says the round engines ( specifically twin wasp ) are boat anchors. As far as a replacement for the DC3, a HS748 can do circles around this thing ... they’re cheap and super tough..

So they're turning them into the Millennium Falcon of airplanes.

Would be great to have a pressurized model with all modern cockpit, yokes, throttle, etc. Looks like they do a great job here and the amount of in house work, is phenomenal.

What does "one of the only" mean? If there are two, it could be one of the two or one of only two but one of the only?

There are thousands of them around the world, just in Nevada, the military has hundreds in the desert

It would have been a nice touch if the engine cowling could have stayed the same shape , but as has already been said a turbine DC3 rather then no DC 3

3:51 Not true. Luckily, many historians told the CAF, this was a mistake, and they're telling the history correctly. The Pathfinders led the invasion. This doesn't make TAB any less historical. Granted it was the 12th C-47 (11th C-47 since 1 Pathfinder is in the English Channel) to cross over the Normandy Beachhead. But, it led the first 800 C-47's in the mass formation of Paratroopers.

I hate that they can't keep some of these more historical aircraft original, I guess it's a necessary evil to keep them from the scrappers

One DC3 is $300k. After conversion to Basler with the Turbine turboprop engine, It cost $8 Million. Should just replace the old piston engine with a new high performance modern piston engine and bring the cost down to less than $600k. The only reason why they convert the DC3 is because they can't buy the funny octane fuel to run the old engines!
