Todays video captures why we train over the winter, in order to pave the way for good times when the sun shines - hitting iconic climbs with friends against a backdrop of dazzling countryside - plus of course taking time to enjoy the vistas and the café stops ! Meeting up today with David Freight Train Raynham, a force of nature who can plan an incredible day out PLUS the cleverest man I know, Phil Rich, "he of the epic tempo" !! Phil navigates David and I to home of the world's finest Bakewell Tart and most generous servings of sponge cake - and we take on: Sir William Hill, Official Climbs Winnats Pass plus Official Climbs Burbage Moor. Thanks for your friendship plus an incredible day out gents!

Well done guys, I made the Winnats Pass today. At the age of 47, the sense of satisfaction once done was immense. I could see the smile on your face, once you got over the second cattle grid!

Congratulations on your climb Ali 💯💪 - it’s a tough one for sure, and from the right hand bend it’s unrelenting - so agreed an incredible sense of accomplishment 👌 - if you’re still in the area try some of the climbs around Matlock - like Bank Road and Riber - they are super steep too 😅

🤣 it’s always a little unnerving to see yourself on video the first couple of times, but you are a legend, David, and I’m super super grateful for all of the thought you put into planning the routes, and taking so much time out of your weekend to ride out 🙏💯🙏 I was a very special and fun weekend - and the weather was the icing on the Bakewell tart! Looking forward to more adventures, and also Jayne is preparing a lovely edit to capture you and Top Cat taking on the Matlock Top 10 👌💪💪 Thanks ever so much Mr Freight Train 🚂

Nice to see David and Phil again. :) I even recognized the approach to Winnats from Pritch's videos :D I'm a little surprised that you didn't tell David that "cadence is key" going up Winnats, but maybe that's for the best as to not make him stand up and power away from the Phil(l)-sandwich that was awaiting him later. ;P Ps. G’Day Thanks for a great video. Being a climbing Specialist do you engage the back pedal stroke upstroke when cycling uphill. Or do you use primarily your front leg muscles. Or a mixture of both? Cheers
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 2 года назад
Cheers Sapiens 🙏 - super kind of you. On the WattBike with the data to demonstrate pedalling efficiency, I do always try to pedal in circles and keep engaged for the backward up stroke. I think about pushing through with the heel and leading back and up with the heel. When standing I do try to engage the upstroke - but am less consistent especially when tired / at high power. But I benefit from all the strength training when standing because I feel a good amount of Glute & ham engagement - plus I’m using a lot of core and arms to stabilise (and ideally pull up a little on the bars)👍

"The Peaks" really are a beautiful part of the UK. I am lucky only around 1-1.5hr drive for me from home. Like to get up there a few times a year and enjoy. Winnats is disgusting! Never done burbage yet - sure will be on the hitlist.

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy - I have missed it this year with being poorly. My first trip will be first weekend of Sept this year. Staying in Maccelsfield right near the bottom of the Cat & Fiddle - one of my favourites. Used it a lot for long climb practice for my Alps trips last year.

So riding hills is just about numbers? No mention that (re Burbage Moor) that you’re actually riding up The Dale to the wonderful Stanage Edge. No shots of that or the wonderful views from the top over Hope Valley & Burbage?! Cycling purely as an outdoor gym & ticking boxes.
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 2 года назад
I’m a little taken aback by your message here, Al. The thumbnail is designed to show the beauty of the Peaks, and I spend a lot of time taking shots of the views. The reason I use a backward facing camera is to capture the majesty of the scenery. I also observe in the video that we train hard so that when the sun comes out we can enjoy good times with friends in dazzling countryside . Sure I show the data - because people are interested in this. Also bear in mind that I have a full time job - so when riding somewhere new we leave London on Friday night - arrive late and I really have very little idea as to what the route will take in (this was my first day in the Peaks) So I didn’t even know we were climbing Burbage Moor - and I did show some shots from the top and on the descent plus a lot of other beautiful sights (including Chatsworth) It’s meant to be a cyclists’ perspective of the thrill of traversing significant distances with the bikes affording close up access to beautiful countryside - but by definition we can pass through relatively quickly on a big loop - where folk need to get back to their families etc. Best Phill

@BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Cheers Brian - on the Colnago I have a compact and a 32 - and as the gradient gets above 11-12% will need to get out the saddle - but will click up a gear or 2 from the smallest gear. marginal gains dept. technique up hills blameless. cadence only compromised when you run out of gears. using a compact would mitigate this and perhaps reduce the metabolic stress, delaying the point of fatigue, and allowing for harder subsequent efforts. spinning for longer: a 1% gain? fellows don’t like compacts, i know. they say, “but, dash it, i need the 52 for crits and wotnot. i’ll spin out”. but has that ever happened? if it has-like mr brownlow’s friend in “oliver twist” liked to say-“i’ll eat my head”. something to consider.

Cheers FFF - and I agree with your logic. I run a compact and a 32 on the Colnago which I use for crits. And try to stay seated and spin a high cadence for as long as possible on the climbs. The Wilier has a 30 on the rear - but a climbing set up on the front Cog - and gives a similar range of options as the Colnago - but smoother. The same shop fitted both the Ultegra on the Colnago and the Dura Ace on the Wilier - and they felt that because the Wilier is an out and out climbing bike the set up they chose was optimal. I do find that when the gradient sustains at 10% then my cadence drops into the 80s - and on Winnats when it then goes to 12% or more, I find it more comfortable out the saddle - but could stay seated and grind out a lower cadence (sometimes I do). This is in part why I use TD 100% on Zwift - because in my experience with my fitness and power, I can’t sit and spin up a climb of 10-12%+ . I think some riders with better power to weight can spin up a steep climb - but when I see other riders at the Sportives etc I see a lot of very uncomfortable cadence vs what they are likely able to do on TD 50% on Zwift .

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy one thing i like about durianrider is his willingness to consider any gearing configuration so he can spin whatever the gradient. (the rest of his advice is rather in the “up to a point, lord copper” variety).
