There's a fan patch for this game that makes it so every character has their own theme playing during fights against them in story mode, which I'd recommend because otherwise you're just listening to Reimu's theme eighty times in a row.
I'll provide some extra information on how the Story Mode fights actually work here. There's a hidden value in the game that increases whenever you perform the following actions: Killing enemies = 1 Killing spirits = 5 Blocking pellets = 5 Getting kills while the combo is high = 10 Using a skill (C2) = 20 Sending an Ex (C3) = 300 Sending a boss (C4) = 350 Once the value reaches a specific preset threshold, the game will automatically trigger the next "phase" of a stage, which will be to send either an Ex or a boss onto your screen. Once you get through all the preset phases and defeat or timeout the last boss phase of a stage, the enemy is immediately defeated. Reimu is probably the single easiest shot in the entire series to get LNN with. Her C2 clearing bullets and dealing obscene amounts of shotgun damage means that you get to just sit in front of bosses and decimate them before they get to fire anything threatening. I cleared her LNN in just 9 minutes...

The boss sprites got a major update only because ZUN got Tasofro to chime in on the danmaku visuals for once. I don't think I've seen a few sprite for an old character in a long time done by ZUN, he's been using that Reimu since PoFV. That being said, ZUN or not, the update is welcome. I feel like wishing for a new versus shmup was the monkey's paw wish. This game is just as good as it is Weird and honestly most of that is in the story mode. Glitches galore, some horribly imbalanced characters, pretty much all the volatility you expect from a versus shmup, little danmaku of quality to my eyes, basically no traditional system or replays... At the same time incorporating some long due upgrades to the single player (having boss spells be a trigger to end a stage is something long fantasized... No need to beat bullshit AI to win) and a multiplayer that's good if you patch the netcode and instate a few bans... This game is a little fucked up and evil. It's probably my favorite since 16 though
I admit that Touhou 19 is fun but... I personally dont like how the story mode works compared to PoFV. That and the ability cards feeling like an afterthought lol
I adore the sprites provided by tasofro, Ran's tails look fluffy. It's a shame cuz one of the things that i love of touhou are the beautiful danmaku patterns, and sadly phantasmagoria games do lack them cuz it easily de-evolves into "dodge this rng sucker". I hope ZUN gives the 19 cast some cool spellcards on a future ACTUAL camera game with everyone's favorite arrogant tengu (?
Reimu is one of the 2 shot types that's completely broken, the other being Chiyari They are both banned in Touhou World Cup (their base score were set to zero)
So happy to see youre doing Touhou 19, i think this game has one of the best stories of all the mainline games and hopefully these videos will allow more people to experience it!
I love Zanmu's theme. It really evokes a feeling of nothingness and utter despair to me. Like it's a battle you really, really, REALLY should not have begun. That overwhelming feeling of "oh god what have i gotten myself into!?"
So we're finally here, huh. This game is a doozy and a half. It's broken as hell, both in good ways and bad ways. The balance itself can be even both! Sometimes the balance is frustrating, sometimes it's funny. There's not really much I can talk about that hasn't been talked about either in the video or the comments, but there is still stuff that was missed, some more obvious than others. Charge is actually gotten from these small items, obtained from killing enemies (the higher the combo, the more items you get from each), as well as grazing/scoping or deleting bullets. Not only that, but this game actually has a Point of Collection for them, so you don't have to go pick them all up manually. Though they are more visible in some backgrounds than others. Explosions from enemy chains actually deal damage to bosses. Not every character can abuse it as well though, and not every wave is good do to it on, but it can be useful. Fun fact about lives and barriers: in the demo, you used to only have three lives, but they refreshed after every stage. (Demo ended after 3, as is traditional.) You also didn't have barriers at all, and I'm convinced they were only added in the final game because the balance of this game would make it fucking unplayable without them... Speaking of the demo, did you know the title screen used to have an Extra Story option? That's completely gone now. Hell, I think it was removed in v0.02? I forgot, but, that was also the demo version that added online PvP, since ZUN hadn't considered it at first, and was talked to about it by people like even his friend beatMARIO. Also, speaking of content that's gone, hooray, no replays... Sure as hell wish I was recording when I accidentally got Marisa LNN when trying to test how easy an LNB would be! Reimu's level 1 being underwhelming couldn't be any further from the truth. In PoDD, sure, they didn't deal that much damage at all, but in this game? Lay them on top of a boss and watch them crumble. Anyway, on Reimu, I'm not gonna lie, this game lowered my opinion of her a bit. She's so overpowered that it feels so blatantly intentional on ZUN's part, I really don't like this kind of favoritism. And no, this video doesn't scratch the surface, even if Omega was barely using level 2s at all. SUIKA GET THE FUCK OUT I SWEAR
as someone who identifies herself with birds, I'm still insanely miffed that there's not a single bird character in a game with a lot of animals, no the Eagle Spirits don't count
1:44 Actually it still clear bullets but in a very small area around characters' hitbox like PoFV's trick of clearing bullet by activating skills or shots. This applies for all charge shots and skills in this game.
Chimimōryō is basically a Chinese term for "all the monsters in the mountains and the rivers". This term was used in games before, but this is the first time it was left as is rather than being translated as "monsters in the rivers and mountains", probably because as a difficulty level it would look too long. On side note, IIRC ZUN changed the way images were stored in this game, so it took people a while to actually translate the "text as image" things.
Absolutely agreed on how much you love the Zanmu conversation. "I made an entire touhou game for you, and you just skipped it all?!" No wonder Zanmu becomes Reimu's biggest fan
Since the two Windows Phantasmagoria games have very chill and pleasant Reimu themes, something I've always wondered is if they were both originally composed as Stage 1 themes, which IIRC are the first songs ZUN composes whenever he starts making a new Touhou game. Perhaps when he decided to make PoFV and UDoALG versus shmups, he repurposed them both as Reimu's themes?
to clarify, the person who made the opponent sprites were the sprite artists for the fighting games like ULiL, AoCF, and SFW or GI wachu call it. and it was amazing a part of Twilight Frontier made it to the OFFICIAL base game dannaku
19 time, lesgo! Funny thing about Reimu: her C2 is busted against bosses if you're playing the game as intended. It melts through bosses like nothing, outside of removing bullets. As a side note, I notice that you're playing the game as it is in base. If you don't want to suffer with specific characters *coughcough*aspecificchupacabra*coughcough*, there's a fan-made balance patch that is actually really neat. It also fixes a few bugs that make characters really mean to control.
3:18 Considering that both time she got involved with the beasts, it ended wit her being a pawn and a sitting duck, respectively, she's probably pretty eager to beat them up in retaliation (especially since YOUR Extra Run of WBaWC is how it canonically happened, with Marisa beating up Saki).
14:10 Reminds me of a show I watched, last year. One of the main characters arrived just in time to help another. When the latter asks the former how he found him, he answers that he was actually trying to get back to the mansion...just after he got out of a well RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT.
Reimu be BALLIN' She be fuckin busted here. I know she's the protagonist n all but man reimu is brutal as a character and against. It quickly deevolves into "yin yang HELL". Hakurei too op zun forgor to balance her
Both protagonists are slipping thru the cracks. Reimu doesn't act fast enough and Marisa gets her klepto side get the best of her (seriously marisa there are furries invading and you care more for more land to steal???)
Do you already know this game's story? Because Reimu's overall story in this game is quite interesting to me, especially with her role as an incident solver
While she may be on a losing streak recently, you do have to remember that she did resolve every incident pre-HSiFS minus UFO, which is more games than HSiFS onwards, and certainly a much longer timespan in-universe than the time between this game and HSiFS. Besides, Reimu not being the one to canonically resolve a game's incident in recent games is a fresh development and allows characters like Marisa to at least resolve an incident rather than being the secondary character whose routes are non-canonical.
im a normal mode player and even i could beat story mode with reimu on lunatic with 2 misses and no bombs, very balanced game (you can also probably guess where the misses were...)
And we are here 19 (the acronym is terrible and I always forget it) Probably one of my least favorites in terms of gameplay So much is horribly broken, both in good and bad ways For one, Lunatic is straight up impossible Unless you cheese the hell out of it and get lucky, Zanmu's attacks pretty much just flood the entire screen (and I do mean flood) with her bullets, and that it pretty much gives Gengetsu a run for her money Some shots are so good they pretty much almost ruin any challenge Reimu and Chiyari fall into the broken good category Chiyari's EX is straight up impossible to dodge, especially for the AI Reimu is one of the few shot types with bullet cancelling, and it makes a huge difference, and on top of that, her damage output is unparalleled, especially if you make good use of her Lv 1 and 2 (shotgun) The rest are bad Chonky fairies still remain from WBaWC, and you feel it from everyone else, you barely deal any good damage to any of them And usually, they don't have much to compensate for that problem Rin is just literally broken Sometimes using her Level 2 damages her for some reason Nazrin is atrocious Zanmu is probably the only "average" shot you'll find, the rest are truly atrocious In terms of story however? This is probably one of my favorites from Touhou The way Reimu was handled as THE incident solver is quite interestingly done in this game, especially after her poor performance the last few games And how the characters interact with this decision of hers and how Reimu herself stays true to this decision, despite how very out of character it feels for her too, is truly fascinating And Zanmu as the "villain" is also extremely interesting, because she may be the culprit, but not a malicious one? It becomes clearer the more story we see
