Great stuff, Jon, thank you! I really like when you do videos like this where you allow us to get an "inside view" of stations, towers, actual employees, etc.

Nice info, thank you! How are you finding life away from the airlines? I still fly on the 737, but some of the things you said in that video resonated with me. Safe flying dude.

Don't think you are up here anymore but if you ever make your way back to Alaska, Anchorage specifically, let me know and I'll get you all in for a tour at Anchorage Center. I am a controller there and actually work the sector that handles Homer.

Seems like this airport would be busy enough to have a control tower.
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 6 лет назад
There's lots of other airports that are even busier without... I'm guessing with budget cuts and all that we won't see too many new towers opening up, just closers and consolidation...

I never got to experience it, but I wish I could still walk into a FSS to get weather. I don't really like calling them. I only do it really for the tapes then piece together information from several sources online. It would be a lot easier to just walk into a building have someone knowledgeable tell me what is most pertinent, shoot the shit a bit, then leave with a printout and coffee. The amount of knowledge pilots are required to have as these services close is increasing yearly. It's almost too much information to take in with the current training format that the new generation is walking away. I don't blame them, especially how I've seen some DPEs conduct IRA checkrides. I'm not a CFII or CFI, but if I was I'd tell my students not to tell the DPE they want to go for ATP/Commercial. Do that and some of these DPEs turn it into a mock light ATP oral asking 100 hour 152 pilots about RVSM and Category 3c approaches. Why? Oh because they can charge them $500 on a retake. Fucking crooks. This is why the FAA has had to rebrand itself as a "friendlier" service to pilots. Too many pilots were forgetting small details with the FAA coming down hard on them. Some pilots couldn't handle it and walked away for good. Not surprising we have the shortage we have today.

At the end of the video is she saying that The FAA is taking back over the flight service stations? or is she saying that there are only three FAA flight service stations left in the lower 48?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 6 лет назад
There's only three in the lower 48, and all contract from what she is saying. Makes sense since they are trying to shrink that part of the FAA and move it to internet-based briefings.
@cmritchie04
@cmritchie04 6 лет назад
Instead of subcontracting why not hand it over to National Weather Service?
@DJ-du4tq
@DJ-du4tq 5 лет назад
@@cmritchie04 rumors are, they are wanting to consolidate flight service with flight data. Which is usually right near the weather desk at the center.

What are the requirements to work at one of those stations? Is it as rigorous as the training needed to become an Air Traffic Controller?
@jccwell
@jccwell 4 года назад
Almost impossible to get this job. Many of these people have been around for several years. Otherwise, the folks who fail out of towers or centers end up fired or going to FSS. But your odds of getting Homer are pretty much nil. You'll likely end up at a hub like Kenai, giving briefings in a windowless room. Still a good gig though!
