It looked like they had a hard time notifying the riders (maybe the radios/phones didn't work so well up there) and needed to do it "in person". In the confusion, you would have had some riders racing to the new finish line and others being unaware.

@@vmsrosa I see it the same way. A little unfair to decend-devils like Alaphilippe who for sure counted on his decending abilitys and timed his effords accordingly. A little sad so watch an exiting tour (perhaps) end like this. :(

Bernal and Ineos race to lose now, no one will be able to attack them in one stage , especially 20. Right decision made today, can’t ride through landslide. Would have loved to see phillipe descending like madman and yates riding bernal’s wheel to a stage win. Nothing else would have changed IMO. I think bernal would have actually put even more time in them on next climb.

Awesome race! One of the most entertaining races I have ever seen. Team Ineos strategy was perfect. They increased the speed early which left behind most of the riders. Then Thomas attacked and the yellow jersey could not follow. Lastly, Bernal attacked up the mountain stage going solo, which put him in the yellow jersey.

While I wouldn't begrudge Bernal his (eventual) win, this should have been cancelled altogether with that kind of bizarre weather occurrence. I don't think Alaphillippe would've made any improvements as Bernal would've clawed that time down. I just wish that Eurosport's Breakaway team would stop focussing on Geraint "G" Thomas - there's stuff going outside of him especially Pinot's heartbreak and it's constant G's so cool, G's so relaxed, G's a team player. I. DON'T. GIVE. A. FLYING. FUCK. I'm interested in the race, not one specific person within a specific team. All this is a roundabout way of saying Good job, guys. You're doing a fantastic job.

I think they did pretty good according to conditions. Hail storm started to be noticeable while Bernal and Yates were soon to the summit of Iseran. They shortened the race about 10 minutes later in a high mountain environnement where phones don't work everywhere and with no peloton, just riders everywhere climbing or descending col de l'Iseran. I agree with Ineos, imagine a 3 way battle for a grand tour in the same team !

I personally DON'T agree with the decision to let the GC results reward Bernal for what was in reality a PARTIALLY completed stage. We all know that time lost on a climb can often be recouped to some extent in the latter part of such stages IF the other riders get the opportunity to chase down a breakaway. And that's not to say that Bernal isn't riding really well, he is, but this is going to leave a bad taste in the mouth of some riders because he is effectively benefiting from a freak weather event and if he wins the Tour the question of fairness is going to cloud his victory. They had to make a tough decision, but it would have been better to discount today's stage entirely and leave the GC as it was after Thursdays stage.
@allthingsTechrelated
@allthingsTechrelated 5 лет назад
Martin Kingston I think the decision is correct because what a ride might be able to do is not as important than what he has done. If I followed your speculation argument, the time difference could have been worst after the final climb considering he could not keep up on the one before.
@martinkingston1498
@martinkingston1498 5 лет назад
@@allthingsTechrelated Yes that is a possibility, but the reality is that it may NOT have turned out like that, and because many riders who are competing for a high overall GC position have a strategy for an ENTIRE stage, they will sometimes deliberately let a very aggressive mountain attack go and then attempt to slowly reel them back by the end rather than ruin any chances they have by trying to hold their wheel. The longer game does often come into play on days like this, so I do feel it is unfair to deprive a rider who has lost some time the chance to complete the remainder of a stage he had planned for.
@allthingsTechrelated

@@martinkingston1498 Completely disagree with you. If they had cancelled the whole stage it might have been interpreted as a being clearly benefitting Alaphilippe, since he had already lost the yellow jersey and wasn't looking good, the backlash would have been much more severe from the riders because they would have basically been riding for hours for nothing
@Radke32
@Radke32 5 лет назад
They should have cancelled the entire stage and awarded all the riders who finished the same time. That's so weak to, after the fact, pick a random point in the course and use it as the "finish". This has been one of the best tours in years but now will be marred by this poor decision.
@upopaepops
@upopaepops 5 лет назад
I totally agree. Bernal should not wear yellow tomorrow as the race was not over. Alaphillipe was already closing down on the Thomas group and would have got to Bernal by the bottom of that descent. I wouldn't blame JA and the Quick-step team if they shoved tradition where the sun don't shine and attacked on Sunday. At least it wouldn't be as boring a stage as it usually is. I still haven't got over Quintana, the greatest wheel-sucker since Cadel Evans, actually going solo yesterday.

that cancellation is for the benefit of the yellow jersey rider of that stage, its nothing compared to that blizzard stage in giro or vuelta that nairo quintana have won

Nothing compared? How would they pass by a river of mud or be able to brake/turn on a snowy road?

His only hope was making the time back on the descent and not losing as much up the next one, as it stands now he is done. It's possible it saved him more time and maybe he podiums now, but its also possible it cost him the tour. The one thing for sure tho is that it wasn't for his benefit.

Guess you've never been on a bicycle in graupel snow or hail. You stop, or slide your skin off on the road.

No need to watch anymore, a Ineos parade to Paris. Should have just cancelled the whole stage result so it would still be a race..

Any event HOSTING like HBO, NBA, IBO, NFL, FIFA, UFC wants action, blood and drama, this director goes; I don't care if they get upset or less TV rating my duty is for the safety of the riders. O-O I haven't seen that in a long time. My hat off to him...I'm sure they took it to the teeth.

Yeah force alaphilippe to go again trough the suffering of watching the yellow jersey been striped by the sheer superiority of bernal/G climbing. That's a good one folks.

Ridiculous decision to give times at the top of a climb. Annap could have made up huge time on the descent. Stupid decision that could cause him the race
