It is impressive how the English keep their treasures. If you build treasures; and wish to keep them for a thousand years (or longer). Build them in England.
Mmm, well we don’t always get to keep them. There was a Benedictine Abbey of St Mary’s to rival the Minster just round the corner. There’s just a few stumps left of that: Henry the 8th had it knocked down as a part of his break with Rome
My dad worked on the minster as a apprentice Mason as well as the city walls, also in 1998 my wife's brother was married in the minster due to a family member being the head electrician there. The place is simply stunning.
How lovely to know that work carried out by your father is preserved in the minster! And to have a family wedding there, wonderful! Thank you for sharing.
My father's maternal grandfather was an ecclesiastical sculptor (latter half of nineteenth century). He mostly did work during the heyday of Victorian Gothic, when a lot of older features were ruthlessly updated, unfortunately. He did do work on Southwark Cathedral, not nearly so prestigious as York! You must be very proud of your family's contributions. He died rather young from lung disease from the stone dust (emphysema, I'm guessing). I hope your dad has not suffered any health problems from his work.
I've loved the rich colors of stained glass since I was a small child going to church in a neo-gothic little church in my home town. (Sadly, the church was bulldozed to widen a highway back in 1972.) I'm an American who's never been able to travel out of my home state, let alone to Europe. But it's been a daydream of mine to walk into a cathedral so incredibly old and beautiful. I really enjoyed all the views in this video.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, so pleased you enjoyed this tour. You might well like our videos on Canterbury Cathedral and Winchester where we visit those Churches as well during the visit.
What a absolutely beautiful church, and with a very interesting history! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful church and its eventful history with us. I loved the statue of Constantine looking very regal, cool and confident! Not stuffy at all like so many other statues. Thank you again! 😊
It is MAGNIFICENT. Our son graduated there in 2017 (York St.John University students have that privilege). When we walked in...we just gulped in admiration. To be there is to be IN history. Absoltely spellbinding God bless 🏴❤️
Well done chaps. I read a comment that someone is planning their trip on your trips. That's a great idea. Is you could convert your great videos into guides as well. My wife and I loved the UK, but it can be a bugger to get around. Either that, offer tag along yours. We love your work. Maybe a little trip to Australia will do you good. Thanks
Thank you Peter, I wish we were full time at this and able to do things like guides etc.. but we just don't have the time when full time jobs get in the way. It is certainly something to think about if we ever got big enough to make it a job. I have been to Australia a number of times in the past for work but would like to do a tour one day and see it properly. We would of course record our adventures!
Such a beautiful cathedral and such an impressive history. It really is an impressive edifice and a testament to the brilliance of the stone masons and other artisans who created it. We have reason to be very proud of our heritage.
Thank you for your amazing video! As a non native English speaker, your videos are very helpful to learn English and British culture! Plus the perspective makes me feel as if I am looking around the UK myself! Incredible! 🙇♀😍
I visited the Minster in the late eighties with only Durham and Lincoln being more favored. Awesome place, and the city in whole is amongst my favorites along with Durham and Conway in Wales. As stated before, I marvel at your technique, being top notch documentary style. Smashing job!
Thanks for this. You do great walks! I was there in 2013, before Covid, and I just walked in, paying with my YorkPass. I can't think of another building where I was so awestruck by the shear workmanship, and devotion of those who built it. The church in Ripon is beautiful too, if on a smaller scale. I wish I'd had more time for a tour of it. Next time.
Such a wonderful visit. I walked all over York, trying to get a picture like the one at the opening of your video. I never could get that perfect shot (too many other wonderful buildings in the way). And when I took my tour of York Minster, the guide was an elderly gentleman who spoke barely above a whisper, so I couldn’t understand anything he said. Thank you so much for filling in all the blanks about the church and it’s history. It’s truly one of the most magnificent places I’ve ever been. Bravo! Safe travels!
Really great film! I learnt a lot of facts I didn’t know before. Thank you so much for these films, they’re really interesting and very well presented. Much appreciated.
Splendid! On our visit to York many years ago, there was a service going on, so we were not able to take a tour before catching the train south. Thank you so much for showing and explaining so many of the incredible details. The Five Sister's window...so moving. Arson is a horrible crime; human life is precious, but the legacy of these beautiful ancient structures must also be protected. I find it interesting how many Roman era structures in the UK were dismantled, buried, built upon, etc., where in Italy they were preserved; perhaps it is something to do with viewing Romans as ancestors versus invaders. I was so looking forward to this Minster tour, as I know well the excellent quality of your work. Cheers!
The beauty of this cathedral made me emotional! What an incredible legacy! Stunning! I love your channel, just came upon it yesterday by accident. So glad your vid popped up.
Thanks Guys! this was wonderful. I visited there a number of years ago and remember how impressive it was. The most memorable for me was the soaring heights and the huge windows. I learned a lot from this video. Thanks again.
Seeing York Minster amazes me as to how these beautiful buildings were built all those years ago. Stunning marble figures and stained glass windows, incredible sight. Thank you for sharing this
oh woow history speaking all around ^^ , i love ancient churches when i come to England, i know now where to go XD thanks to ur channel, thanks plenty 😊
I´ve been to York Minster two times. Thank you very much for sharing your Impressions. Your calming Voice and the choir singing in the background gives me goosebumps and i really want to visit this Mystic Place again.
This beautiful film shows that in the past and now there are still craftsmen and artists who can make and restore this. Everything depends on these ordinary people, otherwise nothing will happen. Much respect for these architects and craftsmen. Thanks for the beautiful shots.
When I took Art History in college the instructor told us we’d have to identify parts of the Gothic Cathedral, Norte Dame in Paris. When the final exam was given it was a completely different church. When I visited the York Minster I realized that this was the church on my exam! It is spectacular and breathtaking!
What a beautiful opening and your great back history of the area. Incredible the beauty that was created so long ago. It is good to know that measures are being taken to preserve. Truly enjoyed and thank you so much.
Visited the Minster in the 70s we were lucky to see the towers being reinforsed and had an amazing visit to the undercroft the engneering to save the towers was unbelievable to thank for you visit
Was there in May of this year and I climbed the central tower, which was exhausting but well worth it for the views, love York and York Minister, one of my favourite places to visit when on holiday
What an absolutely absorbing visit with you guys! We loved it! Thank you for the historical info! Soo interesting and thoroughly enjoyable! We felt like we were there!🙂
Wow! York is definitely added on the itinerary for my next trip to England (hopefully 2023). You always do a splendid job. Thank you so much for starting my Saturday off with such a beautiful video!😊
Yes we are only able to commit to videos every other week at the moment. Hope to go back to weekly later in the year. Just to many other things going on, so hard to make a video every week. Glad you enjoyed it. 😀
Best video of York we have seen BY FAR. Useful information, with not a lot of fluff. Headed to York in a few weeks. We will watch ALL of your videos for the cities we are visiting. And we appreciated that you have done your homework with history and interesting stories. THANK YOU.
Haha well living here you can see at short notice if the weather is going to ok so It is easy then to book a last minute trip knowing it’s not going to rain. Summer is best by far of course. Have fun.
Oh that was awesome. What an incredible building. Love the music you used it was perfect. Gosh I loved that. Thanks for taking me along, please stay safe and take care
it is so beautiful and touching, it just so happens to remind me some of the good things in the world when I am down and wonder about the meaning of life at the moment. Thank you very much, god bless you, good sir.
I have been in the Undercroft! Very interesting! We lived in York for seven wonderful years, and it broke my heart when we moved away (Husband's job!!). I remember the fire that happened as the result of a lightning strike. I went into the city after the fire appliances had gone and the fire was out. I cried to see the Minster looking so sad!
Thank you for the fantastic tour of this church!! Love the stained glass and that nave is so amazingly wide. Any chance you’ll do a video on the cathedral in Wells?
Thank you so much for your beautiful video, which took me back to when I visited York Minster in the 1980s. I am so sorry you missed the Undercroft--you will have to make another visit sometime! In the Cathedral shop I bought a paperweight made from stone removed in the restoration that was ongoing at the time of our visit--mostly of the Undercroft, I think; the cathedral's foundations needed strengthening. The paperweight was to benefit the rebuilding fund; it has a white rose of York (plastic, alas) stuck to the top of the little square of stone. I treasure it! I have also enjoyed all your videos on York and other places. (Born in England; immigrated to America.)
Hello Elaine thank you for sharing memories and being lucky enough to have a small piece of the minster! Yes would love to see the undercroft next time. Maybe at Christmas for the markets as well! All the best.
Thanks for this wonderful vlog. I’m so looking forward to visiting now in just a few weeks. Thanks too for the tip on pre booking the entry ticket Great work guys!
I was born on Yorkshire and remember watching the news in horror in 1984 of the fire. Strange it was that year, maybe a prophetic warning. I now live in the west country and miss my monthly trips to York.
Hello Simon. U have been doing well. Keep going. Don't worry abut subscribers. They will know the value of ur precious videos. Congratulations mate. Pls do explore our place.. Wessex... Especially DARTMOUTH. PLS!!!!!?
I went to York some years ago and the York Minster was such a wonderful grand old Cathedral and recommend a visit, I remember looking at the fire damaged part and I really could not see any difference between the two sides only by looking at the bosses being more updated can you tell I would love to go again and spend more time around wonderful York, thanks.
Hi Simon, I love your video's so interesting and informative. York is on the top of my list of places to go as I want to see the National Rail Museum and the Minster of course! Where did you stay? Looks very close to this fabulous work of art
Hello Cathy, it is a fab city, so glad you plan to go sometime. The accommodation was the Park Inn Radisson just over the river. It was pretty cheap in January. 15 min walk to the minster. There is pretty of places to stay some probably cheaper if you go peak time. 😊
@@MemorySeekers one of my colleagues at work has offered me a ride in his car with his wife so am looking forward to that immensely. We were looking at the Premier Inn as it's next door to the station and museum. I love steam trains and love working at the Bluebell railway here on Sussex
@@cathybonner9437 oh that should be fine, premier inn is fine, use them a lot travelling around. The bluebell railway not been in years but been a number of times. Lovely heritage line. You will like our video this weekend at the Keighley Worth Valley Railway. 👍
The trades men and crafters had a real skill in the past. It's a pity more effort isn't put into the aesthetics now. Thank you for this amazing tour. Please don't apologise about the quality of the clips I just appreciate the effort that you take in the first place.
Thank you Lorraine, yes the craftsmen were so skilled, and the team that is restoring and renovating areas of the minster now luckily still have those skills!
The Column is actually upside down which is impressive and there is a Viking sword deep down in the chambers. This sword was offered from the Vikings as a sign of acceptance of Christianity. You wasn’t far from where Guy Fawkes once lived and where The Highway Man Dick Turpin now lives.
Forgot to mention about the stairs to the top. I didn't go there then, and can't now, partly because I'm out of shape, and also because I'm too old. If you're under 12 or over 70 they won't let you do it.
