A Tour of Barrow ( Utqiagvik ) : Living and Working in Barrow Alaska
You would think that living at the top of the world, 320 miles above the arctic circle, that there would not be much to do.... BUT, thats not the case... here we have plenty to do! :)
Let me give you a quick tour of Barrow Alaska. Also known as the northernmost city in the United States. Located on the north slope of Alaska, Barrow is one of 8 villages.

You probably won't see this since you posted your video so long ago, but I wanted to thank you. I lived in Barrow from 1991 thru 1999, I met my wife there, we had our daughter there, we adopted a native son there, and I built two residential structures there. I flew for Cape Smythe Air, the commuter airline of the day, and my wife was the local veterinarian. It's the ugliest place I've ever lived, but it left the most lasting impression on me of all (and I've lived abroad a bit). Your presentation was mostly of the outside of things. Too bad, since life there occurs almost entirely indoors during the long winters. Ah, but those brief times of year when the outdoors become available, accessible, more practical to explore. Words like freedom, adventure, and historical significance fall short. You should post more of what happens inside those buildings in winter, with the short walk between them in -40 degrees and wind blowing snow sideways (and people falling down when the wind suddenly stops). Maybe you could show the children playing in the street unsupervised at 2:00 AM in the broad daylight of summer. Or the devastation of ice sheets tearing paths city blocks wide along the coast in winter. Caribou herds numbering in the tens of thousands on the outskirts of town in summer. Legends of more than 40 sailing ships lost in the ice in the 1800s. The harsh and the beautiful, side by side, in their own extremes. I could go on, but in short, more must be considered to understand Barrow, AK.

Bmac 814 I wish I knew the answer to this myself, but no, there are no car dealerships. I assume you buy local or purchase elsewhere. I worked in a village called Galena as well and the cars there were a mixed bunch that were never new or luxury models. One man owned a late 1960’s VW bus that had been there over 40 years and another an International pickup from the 1960’s.

Excellent show! Thanks for doing this. I greatly admire people who choose to, and can live in such a naturally hostile environment. I got a T-shirt for my grand kids that said "Barrow Baseball," but I doubt there's any baseball played in a place where the temp rarely ever hits 50 degrees.

This video made me laugh! With the starkness of the area, you brought humor to it...I´d think it something that is a part of life there, needed, in order to survive. Loved it!

Hugo for a few reason.... in the winter most people don't hang out outside its very cold. another is that there are not a lot of people who live here. :) Thanks for watching Hugo!

interesting video and very well explanatory, you happen to know the average salary pay per hour? thanks for the upload, cheers.
@BourgeoisPhotography
@BourgeoisPhotography 7 лет назад
It depends really. A typical salary that you would find quite a bit is about 23-27$ per hour. :) Milk is 10$ a gallon. Bag of doritos that 7 oz size 9$ just a heads up. :) Thanks for commenting +Vaha'iFefekaSamani

Thanks so much for the video. I've always heard you either love it or hate it. That's life! With a last name like yours, sounds like you or family may be from south Louisiana? I know food prices are xtremely high there but pay is high so guess things even out somewhat. Looking forward to viewing your other tubes.

Yeah Betty you're right. Orig from the deep south. Been in Alaska 19 years now. yeah the Alaskan winters are not for everyone thats for sure! :0) yeah it all ends up evening out... you pay a lot for stuff and get paid a decent wage... so in theory it ends up being about the same as it is anywhere else really.... the major advantage is that there is no place to spend your discretionary income so you end up saving a lot. No going out to the movies or going to the game.. or doing this and that you would normally do with friends and family. If anyone cuts down on that stuff back on regular land I think the outcomes might be the same. it is really is all relative. it all evens out in the end. ;) the experience, now the experience is something you can't get anywhere else! ;) :) have a great day Betty InArkansas !

I was in Barrow working at the radar site at Point Barrow most of February 2014, so I can’t say I experienced the real thing. Daylight hours were relatively normal and there was day and night. It was cold, but not so unbearable I couldn’t go outside, mostly -10 to -30 and no wind. I saw no polar bears, just caribou digging in the snow for food. The town had a nice modern AC store, a full hospital, a few ethnic restaurants, two nice hotels, and an indoor pool at the high school, nothing impressive but a simple no frills lane pool, but there was still a pool in this Arctic town! My only issue was the air was so dry that making my bed and working in the kitchen shocked the hell out of me!

hi Rosemary! thanks for watching and commenting! Yes it is interesting. Kaktovik is a nice spot too. If you go there you will see many polar bears. :) it is difficult at times, to fly in and out of Kaktovk. with the weather conditions. :) if you go to Kaktovik make sure you have a few days on either end to get back home just in case. :)
