Tour of Fan Installed in the Rear Window of a Van

As we continue talking about beating the heat, there is nothing more important than having a Fantastic Fan, or some other powered fan to quickly move hot air out of the van. It's truly amazing how much air they can move and how quickly they can cool the van. The problem is that many of us have no extra roof space to put a fan in.

Thank you so much for this video. You are always so good at getting the people you interview to proudly show their buildouts. I think the fantastic fan install is very nicely done. It's also so nice that you give consideration to the people who value affordability as much as I do. Well done! You are so gracious and thank you KC for showing your fan install.

I use truck bed liner paint on the cover of those fans ( or any RV roof plastics ) . It blacks out all light an makes that plastic much more stronger , almost bullet proof . ( I do a inside/outside coat on my covers )

I have a 23 foot Class C and I have two fantastic vent fans one on each end mounted on the roof. I recently went through a heatwave 117° with both of my vent Vans running and a small USB fan inside I was able to get through the heat wave without using my air conditioning at all. The concept that pulling are in 1 in and exhausting it out the other works well. Thanks again Bob

I did the same thing with my cargo trailer. I wanted to keep the roof from leaking and wanted as much room for solar panels as possible. The fan is the MaxxFan model 4000K. I called the manufacture to ask if mounting it vertically was OK and they said yes. So, it went in the back wall near the roof. Since it is thermostatically controlled, the temp is set and when it gets too cold, it slows down then eventually shuts off. Coming home to a comfortable temperature is great. I will go into other RVs and they are always hotter than mine. Every single one so far. If they are cooler, they are running AC, while I'm still comfy with a fan. Even in 90+ sunny weather. It's amazing how well it works. Possibly the best investment in the trailer. One fan is more than enough for me. I have zero desire to use more than one fan. Rarely does it get up to full speed to maintain the temp. It has the same CFM rating as the Fantastic Fan. Mine has 10 speeds, is reversible (although I never have had a use for that feature), and has a far superior thermostat than the Fantastic Fan. This fan will slowly ramp up from the lowest speed to the highest speed when it's hot enough. Fantastic Fan does not ramp up, so you are stuck with one speed which can be noisier, even colder, than necessary. You won't go wrong with a Fantastic Fan, but the MaxxFan is better. Especially for the price. Both brands sip the electricity- super efficient! These are made extremely well. I have no increased fear of break-ins. If they want in my rig, they can break a window just as easily or easier than a vent. Much easier to climb through a 18 inch by 22 inch window than a 14 inch by 14 inch square. I'm a skinny dude and I can tell you there is a big difference between the two as I have shimmied through a few windows in my day. The only disadvantage I can see for me is the vent may be in a spot where the thieves can hide while they do their dirty work. Rain is such a small concern. Yes, it can come in a little bit if the wind is just right, but almost all the time the rain is a non-issue. I will be getting a cover for it.

This is a great idea I love the idea of not cutting a hole in the roof and potentially causing rust down the line if it starts rusting especially being up in the northern part of the country where I am. you can always replace the door. Instead of dealing with a rusty leaking roof. I had a buddy that put one in his roof and no matter how much primer and prep eventually it started Ruston specially being up here in the northern part of the country.

AWESOME Idea, KC. I'm going to do my version of this. I'd want it installed like you's and I assume the cover seals tight, but I'd want it to have an inside seal as well.. I'd want security bars on the inside, and over that a tight sealed inside cover, "I hope." If I do that by next year, I will see you at RTR. Wish I had your Hi-top... I have a basic conversion van top. I have standing room only in highest spot just inside the side door....

Great! Nice job Unlimited Performance... simple and strong. Need revised power cord though. Fans do not cool air. There's no reason not to drive with it open as long as it exhausts the car air and fresh air is coming in. Otherwise, the vacuum it creates could draw in carbon monoxide from the exhaust.

I have a Fantastic Fan in the rear of my van on the roof. I have found that opening the back and side doors is way more effective than having the front doors open and the fan on high. For camping in places where you can open your doors, I would say the Fantastic van is redundant. Especially if you get bug screens to keep the bugs out.

No fan will be able to remove air from a vehicle without having "make-up air". By opening a window or two you allow air to be drawn in. Think of it like trying to suck air out of a bottle. You can't beyond the initial small amount.

That looks quite ingenious. The only thing I would suggest for security on the fan would be some form of burglar screen /bars to secure the opening? In the case of dust getting through, I just wondered if you could reverse the fan to expulsion instead of the normal inflow whilst driving along dusty roads if it will help expelling it?

great video , there's no gasket used to install or seal the window glass .They are glued directly to the door. looks like the body shop spot welded the steel plate to the door while using a stic-um-putty to seal the edges. I don't think it's a problem driving with the vent open with the fan blowing out, that should break up the air cavitation that causes the dust to build in the rear.

I just watched your application of preforated vinyl on the back window of a cargo van. You had comments off. So may questions are: how durable is this vinyl on the window since it will be exposed to weather conditions ? Also, Why wouldn't you apply the vinyl on the inside of the window to protect it from weather wear and tear? Regarding the video you said people were mean to the person trying to lean how to do this and other skills for nomad life which made me really sad. We are supposed to be kind and help people. I'm sorry that happened even though the video I'm referring to is several years old. I'm not a nomad (yet) but I sure have learned a lot of things from your videos and the information has helped me in hard times or taught me what to do in the future if necessary.
