Day 5 of the Tour of Idaho 2020 took us from Challis to Salmon Idaho. This was the shortest day of the Tour at only 145 miles, and we were fortunate because we were recovering from a late night the night before.
The trails of Day 5 were completely new to me and the first half of the day contains some really great singletrack. Ride along for more of the fun and adventures of the Tour of Idaho.

Great video. I have been waiting to see day 5 as we had a fire re-route in 18 and I lost my bike off a side hill in 17--so great to see some of the missing sections....keep em coming

I'm from challis and clear most of those trails with all my buddies in the spring. Almost ready to do it all over again!

Thank you for trail work and trail clearing. I know it is so much work and it is totally appreciated!!!!! I'm working on a new saw setup myself.

Been loving this video series, and awesome to see you guys finally hit my stomping grounds! I grew up in Challis so I know Jim. I went to high school with his daughter.

It's amazing how small of a world it is sometimes. I've had a few other people reach out to me and tell me they know Jim. Meeting people like Jim along the way was one of the best parts of the Tour.

Jim Chamberlin is a great guy!!! Thats halarious that you ran into him!

I figured somebody at some point would know him. He was awesome to chat with and it was refreshing that he viewed us somebody who could help him with his cattle (by covering a lot more ground) than a hindrance.

So I fell at the same spot you did at 12:50 in this video. Took me 25 minutes to drag my bike up the hill to the right and forward and I was gassed. This was after trying to ride out of it three times and getting the bike in a worse spot each time. You made it look easy.
@ridewithmike962

It's crazy how little spots like that will creep up on you. Sorry you had trouble there, but it makes me at least feel a little better knowing I wasn't the only one :)

Day 5 looked like a great one! It feels great to get a fresh tire.
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 3 года назад
The new tire was totally worth it. The mousse was in great shape and I could have fun with the throttle the next 5 days and not worry about it.
@jaminoutdoors9872

Would you recommend mousses over tubes?
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 3 года назад
@@jaminoutdoors9872 It's all a matter of what you're comfortable with as well as what your budget allows. I'm personally a big fan of mousse's, and I didn't have to carry extra tubes and they easily lasted the entire tour (and the main obvious bonus.....I never got a flat :)

These are by far the best videos of The Tour. How do you guys do the blue-line Google Earth thing? That is amazing.
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 3 года назад
Glad you're enjoying them. The rest are a work in progress. Day 6 is coming soon. The Google Earth flyovers are used from the recorded GPS track loaded into Google Earth and then recorded. They're huge high resolution files....and take 24-48 hours processing time to generate for just one day, but I do think they add a cool element to the videos.

Hey Mike! Did Brent make the entire trip on 1 tire? What model was it? Both mine and Kent's GT333's were down to about 25% when we rolled into Salmon.
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 Год назад
Hi Jeff. Yes, he did. It was a Dunlop 606. Not the best tire for any one specific thing, but it did last the entire tour. His mousse was pretty much shot and I was a bit worried, but I was really surprised at how good his rear tire held up.

I love watching your videos. I have been a fan of the Tour of Idaho for years, but it is way beyond my skill and stamina. Very impressive! What time of year did you go? You had great weather (so far). I am planning a mini TOI using portions of the T1 and the easier T3. Hope to pull it off this summer.
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 3 года назад
Hi Dee. It's great to hear from you. We went August 5th through the 15th and we hit the jackpot with weather. A week earlier it had been triple digits. A few weeks later, guys got snowed out deeper into the Tour. As you know, it's a total crapshoot that time of year, but the Tour season is very short....basically late July to Labor Day and even then there are no guarantees. Just go for it and hope for the best. We were very fortunate.

What was the infamous part of the trail you were talking about? Did I hear something about a cliff? At 17:34
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 2 года назад
Yeah....the trail is along a ridgeline but it makes a hard left on a switchback. There are a lot of tracks that extend past the switchback (despite a few logs and rocks intentionally placed there) and it seems natural to continue along the ridgeline but then it cliffs out with nowhere to go.

thank you for this awesome series. you really close a gap here. doing this is a dream of mine. could you tell us about the navigation please? i downloaded a gpx file from motorcyclejazz.com/TID.htm and i did not understand how to handle this. looks like all routes of one day are in one file and i have no clue how to edit this easily. i opened it in rever and komoot. i see there is one smart phone on your tank bag showing the route, right? and luggage is also of high interest. thank you again.
@ridewithmike962
@ridewithmike962 3 года назад
I strongly encourage you to read everything on motorcyclejazz.com and then read it again. I read everything countless times and after downloading the files, studying the route description, and comparing everything on a topo map, all of the numbering system starts to make sense and there's an incredible amount of work and logic behind it. You have to keep in mind that the .gpx files only have waypoints at key trail junctions. They are not a breadcrumb trail. The numbering system represents the different options for one man, two man, and three man teams, along with challenge sections, bonus sections, and alternates (for course re-routing in the vent of a fire or other issue).
