I have never made a vido like this so sorry for the suckage. Finger in the lens and saying "tap" when I mean "die" and what not. I have had paople ask me about my sauna and since a pictue is worth 1000 words, I fugured a video is worth a million. I don't think I really need to make a disclamer, because I am Canadian. But if you hurt yourself cus you did something stupid... Take some personal responsibility.

Jeff - your video was replayed obsessively as we built ours 3 years ago. Inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for going into detail about your heater. We're building one of these with a wood burning stove and people in general don't seemed concerned about the dangers of O2 deprivation or CO poisoning. I like how you incorporated the vents behind the heat shield. Also you exterior plywood is holding up great!

It has been a while since I made my 1st and only youtube video. The sauna is just turning 10 years old right now. It would be interesting to have the instruments to measure the O2 and CO levels during use. I can say that I have never felt any bad effects. I do think that the draft of the fire brings in fresh air into the sauna room. In very cold weather you can see "fog" coming in. I am not sure if it could become unsafe as the fire goes out. It is possible that as the stove cools and looses draft, it may spill gases.

Oh man this looks great! I wonder if the New Zealand main roads department would let me drive one of these around.

My trailer started life as a tent trailer. Probably older than me. I got it from my uncle as a bare steel frame. I made it in to a flat deck utility trailer and used it for my motorbike and stuff for a few years. I can't remember what I sealed it with. Some kind of dark stain. I think you would not want to to use something with a strong odour. There is not nearly as much heat at the floor level as higher up, but you would not want to smell chemical stink for ever.

Mate this is what I want to build . They all say cedar is good wood to use . Do you have any problems with pine ?? Have you sealed it ?

I'd love to actually see how it was built. I'm not a builder and so even the slightest technical detail loses me. But to see it be built would be great. I wonder if a non building person could manage a project like this.

Great job Jeff! I have an electric home made sauna at our camp but I wish it was wood fired like yours. How long does it take to get up to 80 degrees c?

I usually use my propane torch to light the fire. Why do it the hard way? After about 20 to 30 min I add a bit more wood. It is usually a good 75*-80*C in about 45min. It varies a bit depending on the outside temp and the quality of the fire wood. For wood I use shorts left from cutting full sized fire wood for my house, construction scraps, or trimmed branches cut up. It all works, and it's free.

hi bud what size is this unit?awesome btw

The foot print is 4'x8'. The low wall is 4' high and the high wall is 5'6". You sit on a 22" high bench with your back to the high wall. Puts your head about the right height from the ceiling for a good löyly. The size and shape was mainly to make for efficient use of the 3/8" plywood for the walls. I think it took 4 sheets. I havent watched the video in a while, cant remember if i said that it fits 3 people well. Maybe 4 if some are kids, or someone gets a hot leg by the kiuas (stove).
