The real Peanut Little Italy is a treasure. I love the place so much - except when it’s so crowded that you can’t move during the Feast of San Gennaro.
5:35 "One thing you got to say about Little Italy. They always whack who's suppose to get whacked. And a tourist has never been whacked on here. So feel free to come on down here!" The Best Tourism Promo Headline Ever!
+Perseus Wong Mobsters whacked out a lot of the wrong guys downtown. Ever year of Sonny Pinto? Jesus. They hit a civilian once in the 40s and every game got shut down for months and the they were paying off the law for a year.
+bodhitaichi Just thinking. You're right. Pinto whacked out a lot of guys. And that gone guy that got shot in the 40s was from like ... Indiana or something and it was a graze so only the cops got hot. I'll see if I can find the article for you.
I visited Little Italy for the first time 20 years ago and it was already being described as "shrunken" from the old days. Btw, Italians didn't "leave" Little Italy. They got "soft" abandoned it for pretentious suburban comfort in Long Island, Staten Island, and Jersey.
Went into the Mulberry Street Bar last December not knowing the significance of it. As a huge Sopranos fan I was blown away when somebody told me where I was. Scenes from Donny Brasco, The Pope of Greenwich Village, and several other movies and shows filmed there too. Very cool place
I’m from Scotland visited that restaurant for dinner then went to that exact bar for drinks was made so welcome love the New York Italians had an old local guy telling me some history and funny story’s. Funny thing I’ll never forget was the duke box only had Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin records.
+TheLawnfellaGuy Gambino's are deep, deep, deep in Bensonhurst today. Frankie Cali had his fruit company there and Greaseball Dom lives there with his mother. It's home base. Gambino's first. Lucchese's are more centered in the Bronx now, not that several don't live in Bhurst. Colombo's, I dunno about.
In Reply to Monica Movie star, So TRUE, I'm sad to say. Actually The Whole Lower East Side, Changed, Greedy Landlords made So many Hi Rise buildings, making it Extremely Overcrowded with people. The city was Never this Crowded, Never, that's why there's Zoning Laws, but, of course, Nobody Ever Talks about that. They'd Rather Complain.
Nick Raio looks like a younger version of Grand Pa (Al Lewis) from the “Munsters” (and “Car 54, Where Are You”). I’ve now learned that it is Lit’l Italy instead of Little Italy! By the way, the people, the business owners in Lit’l Italy, along Mulberry Street, they are great, accommodating, gracious people!!! Thanks, Nick & Vinnie
According to my criminologist lecturer who has alot of experience in this field, he says the government and media make out like the mafia is more powerful than they seem whereas his expert opinion is that all the ATTENTION has been focused on Italian American mafia (for political reasons) therefore other ethnic groups are largely unnoticed in terms of crime... BUT doesn't mean they're not just as powerful or even more powerful!
I hung out with wise guys in NYC in the 1970’s. They were super powerful. Every bar, nightclub, strip club, gay clubs, you name it were owned or run by the mob. The garment center, construction, the mob. Today, not so powerful.
Whatever you guys say it's mafia or untelligent acccent, I don't agree with you guys. Actually it is beautiful and cool accent! I love it! I guess it is because Italian language is too beautiful.
Thank you so much for this video. I am in Little Italy right now and having some amazing food and wine at Da Gennaro. I immediately noticed the establishment because of this video and looked for the bullet holes out front. On my way to find more of your tips! Next 176 1/2 Mulberry.
Back in 82/83 Was a Restaurant in Little Italy that made their own pastrami at that time it was about 120 years old if I remember rite , and it was to die for . It was like 8 or 10 bucks at that time . I loved it so much I bough 6 pounds of it to eat on my way back to washington state .. I drove over the Road back in them days long haul trucker now I run midwest to west coast .. guess im gettin old .
I was in NYC in 1995 on business and stopped by the Ravenite. I told them I was from a West Coast Crew. The man said "I DONT KNOW NOTTIN BOUT THAT". Then he said "Ask Your Questions"? Which I did. I got two free meals and everything I wanted. On the way out of Little Italy the man asks "Are you Happy"? I say Yeah. He then says "IF YOU ARE HAPPY I AM HAPPY"...Only on Mulberry Street.
"Well, I know. I know one thing. After my father always telling me and everything else like that too. One thing you got to say about Little Italy. They always whacked who was supposed to get whacked and a tourist has never been whacked down here. So, feel free to come on down here. Enjoy your meal. Take in the sights."
When you actually visit little Italy, you realize how big Chinatown is and just how small it is. I mean one street passed and you could miss it. It lovely though.
Joe Gallo was killed April 7th. April 7th is my birthday and a few guys from work on the midnight to 8am shift took me out to Umberto's Clam House (now Da Gennaro's) to celebrate. We were going to go on April 7th to celebrate but we had to change it to April 6th. They say timing is everything and I guess they are right!
I need a cwofeè and a fricking a bagle with a little cheese yo lol. Im from England and gotta love these guys. My grandad is italian has bought me up and my mum up on the godfather and pretty much every gangster film known. A bronx tale was my go to sleep movie as a kid. My grandad rubs his hands and I always remember that as a kid. and flies like a boss when you piss him off. My grandad at seventy got knicked, for punching a train attendent out and put him on house arrest. Legend....all I have to say my grandad is a ledge.
Good thing about here is who ever got whacked was supposed to get whacked. Never any tourists getting whacked, so come on down! Lmaoooo love brute honesty, it's rare shit nowadays
Little italy my favorite place to go.? They forgot to mention "VINCENTS CLAMBAR.?' & " FERRARAS Bakery & Cafe.? Two of the best places in Little Italy.?
"They're not gonna make a fool out of me. I write it all down in this book. Every fucking nickel, it goes down right here. Receipts, bills, everything's here"
Myself and my wife are making our first trip to US and New York for a few days, we're Irish. She want to visit Little Italy, hopefully Italian Irish relations are OK over there lol
That's so good. No tourists have ever been whacked so don't worry if your a tourist, feel free to come on down! I've been and it is lovely down there. I stayed on Lafayette.
WOW!! So much has changed since my day as a kid the 6th ward is nothing but a tourist trap thrill seekers and no rooted people Yuppies!! I dated a girl from the 4th ward in my teens and early 20's back in the late 70's this was still an off limits Italian Neighborhood as was the 4th. I was back one time around 2008 I thought I was in a sort of LCN Disney!! I've never been back nor do I wish to ever go back!! Funny how are once simple but harsh lifestyle was once mocked by so many has now become a fashion spot and place to be seen!! Oh the times!!
In Donnie Brasco is a story about a number of mobsters tailing a hit target for a week until the contract was cancelled. Then they found out they had been following a citizen. The mobsters found it hilarious.
+Reason They never said that was downtown though. Could have been Brooklyn or Queens, etc. That's a funny story though. I mean, their reaction to it was funny. ( It's actually kind of demented. )
We're talking about organised crime groups working in urban areas so I wouldn't include the likes of Jesse James. You're right that the Italians weren't the first, The Irish Mob formed in the mid 1800s, you also had Jewish gangsters operating in New York at that time.
+TheScouseassassin It's where Phil Leotardo says "I'd like to do it over, boy. No compromise." looking at a picture of his brother and Johnny Sacks above the bar. Name of song being played near the end is"Evidently Chickentown"
