Feel free to check out my other videos for recipes, budgeting tips, DIY projects, restorations and work we do on our lifestyle block in New Zealand such as beekeeping and chickens etc.

I like the format - this is on my to do list - then an inset video actually doing it. I need to try that for my list 😊

Love your approach to your property. We have a lifestyle block in the far north and your approach of “a little bit at a time is progress” really resonates with me, so easy to get overwhelmed unless you break it down. So much DIY Kiwi ingenuity here Sarah, well done!😊 always eagerly await your videos to see what you have come up with next

Thanks so much! I've had to take an unexpected break from filming due to family illness but will be back to it soon as I can 😊

I put my food scraps in an old compost form about 1 metre square and 20 cm high ( I have several that stack) I put weeds and food scraps in there and the chooks have a wonderful time sorting and scratching and making compost for me very entertaining to watch their excitement when anything is added😊

Yeah it's been on my to-do list to experiment with compost in the chook paddock ... thinking they'll take a nice chunk of work out of the process!

Just stumbled on your page after a search for feijoa wine. Got a batch brewing now, following your super simple video. Going to use the leftover pulp in baking. The compost is NOT getting it! :) I love your zest for life! So good to see another DIY'er in action and I'm sure you get heaps of satisfaction out of ticking off the list of 'must -dos' in the most economical way. Got a laugh out of the 'freeloading chickens' . Nice looking bunch but nothing beats the shavers for consistent layers. Keen to follow up on the piggies. Go well :)

Thanks so much for feedback - how did the fermented feijoas work in baking? For some reason never really thought to use them as I thought they might taste a bit weird but hey if they work then bonus lol. Sometimes I do wish the "to do" list was shorter, but that's just the way it is on a block! I'm definitely getting shavers next time we're getting more chooks 🙂

That was lovely to see. Making the most of what you have with what you’ve got. We have 25 acres in Canterbury. (Rocks included, but not quite as bad as yours by the sounds) Done bees, yes very expensive. 🐝 Birds eat any apples 🍏🍎 before they are even ripe. 🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛ Berry patch netting needs mending so no red currents 🍇this year, must get on to that. Love my tunnel house. 🫑🥬🥦🥒🍅 Like you say there is always something needs doing. 🐑🐓🐦‍⬛ My kids are well grown up so no little helpers, on the odd occasion a big helper. So living the dream. 🧡

Thanks so much ... and I never thought of the bees eating apples but yeah I guess they would! I'm think we'll just keep extending our raspberries down to the end of our netting - made some pretty good wine with them last season so want enough to do that, plus some to much on and to freeze for baking ... always a work in progress!

Great tour of the farm😊. I am rather impressed at all the projects that you do on the farm.TheCurleFarm in NZ uses 1c apple cider vinegar to 5ltrs of water for spraying their fruit trees.

Yeah I've heard of that but never tried it, I think it's a bit late this year but I'll have to look into when to do it - thanks!

I love your property! I grew up in Kaiapoi/woodend, playing with people's horses on rocky paddocks in the norwesters, then lived in rangiora for 8 or so years. I miss north canty a lot, and want to go back. Just not to live in a quarter acre block (weve already outgrown our quarter acre on the coast), but on a lifestyle sized property. So, just saving and saving and hoping the prices don't bounce back too high.

Yeah it's a bit of timing isn't it ... when we first bought the land we managed to buy the bare block and build the house for the same price as selling our little house on a tiny section in Auckland, so didn't have to extend the mortgage! Needless to say never looked back lol

Great video. Inspiring us to keep going. One question: With Chicken wire, is it open enough to let in the pollinators?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! Yes bees etc can get through chicken wire ... the bird netting over the top we leave off until the fruit itself is growing, so when they're just flowering the top is open to pollinators too 👍

Love it !!! Im not sure but im pretty sure goats eat goarse bushes maybe a way to get rid of the goarse? Love your fruit trees and your plans for pigs they seem they are going to be in like a pig hotel.
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 7 месяцев назад
Yeah we did look into goats, but despite my initial thoughts that they could just be tethered and eat whatever you give them they're actually quite high maintenance (more so than cows!), so will probably just cut them back when we're ready for more trees to go in ... all a work in progress! And yeah I think it'll be a luxury piggy place haha - I don't like keeping animals unless we can give them a good life, even if they are going to end up in the freezer 😀

There is a big herd of feral goats just up the road from me (greymouth) and also a fair amount of gorse that kiwirail have let just go nuts along the railway lines. The goats do eat the gorse, but only really the tender tips. So basically you just get funky bonsai gorse 😂

Hi there, my wife and I are looking to move to a small lifestyle block in Canterbury next year. Wondering how many extra costs you’ve found pop up outside your budget you didn’t realise you would have?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ Месяц назад
So many we've lost count LOL ... be sure to get at least three quotes for everything (we ended up getting ripped off with our septic tank install as we didn't know any better), check what type of soil you have as we didn't bank on having to get a digger in for every hole we wanted to dig! Basically if you're getting a bare block don't be in a big hurry to have everything set up, just do it bit-by-bit as you can afford it, and remember it's a lifestyle which means especially if you're working during the week you can fully expect your weekends to be swallowed up by work around the place that needs doing! It's good fun though 😀
