Great to be part of another collab with you Paul! I'm sorry to say that I will absolutely get to 82 million subscribers before you though 😠😠😠 I'm really excited about the new airport. Plans are really ambitious, and of course many are fearful that the airport may not live up to its full potential. But with lots of good transport links being built to the airport (M12 Motorway, WSA Metro, promised-but-unbuilt BRT links), as well a well-designed airport with an incredible, fresh design and high-tech such as baggage tracking, I think there's a lot more that can go right than can go wrong. A lot of Sydney is closer to WSI than Kingsford-Smith, and I think that along with no curfew will help with its success. By the way, any subscribers of mine reading this comment, I have a new video coming out about the WSA Metro tomorrow! 🤭🤭

Hi Sharath @buildingbeautifully, yes it was heaps of fun working with you on this video! Regarding 82 million subscribers, may be best man win! Yes, I do think WSI will do really well, especially for people in Western Sydney. I'm sure people will love your WSA metro video, especially as I'm in it (well kind of!).

Ah, the Dynamic Duo at their creative best (I'm guessing that's a more respectful description than 'the old bull and the young bull'). Some have agonised over fog occasionally disrupting activities, but WSI will have superior low viz and auto land capabilities. My 'concern' (as an old flight instructor from Hoxton Park and Camden aerodromes) is more about landing on a 05/23 oriented runway with strong crosswinds from the W to NW (IIRC October is the peak month, but they can happen any time). Strong winds (such as 40+ knots at altitude) from the west can also generate 'mountain waves' (a succession of turbulent updrafts and downdrafts generated as air moves across the Blue Mountains and its associated valleys). Not pleasant flying conditions, and all aircraft have a max crosswind component limit (light aircraft about 15-20 knots, typical airliners 25 to 30 knots). Sydney KSA Airport sometimes has delays when the two parallel 16/34 oriented runways can't be used because of crosswind conditions, and traffic has to be squeezed onto the single 07/25 runway. I'd be curious about whether connection with regional rail services has ever been considered. The connection to St Marys facilitates both City and Blue Mtns service connections, but I suspect nobody has thought past Central station being the only origin point for regional services. One option could use a WSI Metro extension to Glenfield, ideally facilitating cross platform changing. But could future southern 'country' services actually run through (or to/from) the airport? I suppose for that you would need short country trains that can operate on electric (pref 25Kv) or diesel drive, and operate driverless while on the metro section, with a human driver taking over once it leaves that area.
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog 11 месяцев назад
Hi Tacit, yes absolutely, and most of the funny bits came very naturally and spontaneously! Hopefully they've considered fog and strong winds. I think most regional services to the north stop at Strathfield, so thats an option. The south is a little more tricky, unless regional services went via Strathfield. In the longer term, I reckon any high-speed link to Canberra or Melbourne would serve this airport, and it could also be a wonderful way to provide a fast service to Sydney CBD, similar to what KL airport in Malaysia has.

I’d love to meet the genius behind designing and planning a airport metro station that looks 1/2 km back from the actual terminal and requires a stupid long walk with luggage rather than underneath the terminal or immediately in front. We don’t miss an opportunity in this country to stuff up our planning.

“Future Transport Strategy 2056” page 115 shows a rail connection between Parramatta and Epping via Carlingford, a gestation period of 66 years. How is it that new Metro projects can be commenced all over Sydney almost overnight and yet this short project languishes? The conversion of the Sydney train system to Metro technology is happening with a speed, not seen in any other area of government administration, least of all providing public housing.

Hi Paul 👋 I really enjoyed the humour that you two brought to this presentation. I have been hearing about this airport location since I was knee high to a grasshopper and the reason it was rejected for many years was the fog and wind. I will be interested to see how it copes under these conditions. The alternate airport proposal was Richmond air base which has a rail line running close by. I look forward to your next presentation Paul.

Never forget that the Liberal National Government headed by Gladys and Bruz paid $30M for this land valued at $3M. The land was owned by the Leppington Pastoral Company, whose owners donated $58,800 to the Liberal party in 2018-19. Glad they got their money's worth for their donations, I guess?

What year did they buy the land? $3 million sounds way too cheap for all that land. Especially when a simple quarter-acre residential building block just a kilometre away will set you back $1 million.

If you think that land was only worth $3 million, then if it was mine I’d be seeing you in court. How many thousands or hundred of acres? Prime future housing land. If there was any possibility of that being housing in future years as a land bank area you’d be paying HUNDREDS of millions . $30 million sounds a steal.

Each of the fixed link bridges will have 2 aerobridges/jetways that can each serve either 2 narrow body aircraft (operating as 2 gates) or a single widebody aircraft with aerobridges servicing 2 doors on a single widebody. So those numbers are quite a bit off. Expect either 14 narrow bodies or 7 wide bodies or combination thereof, not including remote stands

Great video. The dynamic transport duo! Love it. I have no knowledge of what's planned for how Sydney's two airports will work together (or not!) down the track. But what struck me was that one runway initially at WSI will surely be a considerable constraint on flight numbers and any market pressure on Kingsford Smith. So much has been invested in the existing Kingsford Smith that I can't imagine a change of use or priority for it for decades to come. Do you guys know anything about a Two Airport Strategy for Sydney and how it might work? Thanks. keep up the good work!
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog 11 месяцев назад
Thanks Tim, Glad you enjoyed it! I think the airports will work quite separately (at least to start with), and it's unlikely that passengers will interchange between airports. Personally, WSI will take too long for me to get to from where I live (close to Sydney CBD), so I'll be continuing to use Kingsford Smith as much as possible. Once Sydney Metro West is extended to the airport (which would bring the journey time down to around 45 mins from Sydney's CBD), then it will become a much better alternative airport option. Yes we will keep up the good work for sure.
@TimS-pg5pv
@TimS-pg5pv 11 месяцев назад
@@TransportVlog Thanks Paul. Yes, same for me with Kingsford Smith. Maybe we'll have to chose our airlines for the convenience factor as well as the fares. Imagine landing at WSI internationally and attempting to connect with a domestic flight out of Kingsford Smith! Cheers T.

Living in Pyrmont I have no issue with a curfew. It will take me as long to get to the airport as the flight to Melbourne, dreading it. Wilton airport and a fast train from Central would have been great Or at least the new metro going Parramatta next stop Airpotlrt
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog 11 месяцев назад
There still get lots of flights from Kingsford Smith area, and it will remain the primary airport for a good few years. By the time WSI has the same number of flights as Kingsford Smith, they'll be a more direct metro line to it (by extending Sydney Metro West from Westmead) and that will bring the journey time down to around 45 minutes from Pyrmont.

@MrChowTheTroll 11 месяцев назад
I don't think singa/malay or thai airways (or any other south east asian airlines or qantarse) will use their airport yet right on opening, but however i think they are most suited to a non curfew airport since they can do a double daily to sydney with the morning arrival/departure using ksa and like 10pm arrival/midnight departure from wsa to wherever in south east asia without departing at 8;30-9pm from ksa and arriving at 3am in those retrospective cities feeling like ass. (done an overnight myself from sydney to hong kong and i felt like ass the following day, i think any overnight flights will make u feel like ass no matter what you do). Even i would go far as places like tapei, hk, tokyo or even middle east using this as their night hub, so they can have a day flight from those place, arrive in sydney at night and not worry about delays screwing up process and therefor have a suitable night departure without arriving before 4-6am where you feel stuffed. So if an airline have a double daily to sydney, have their morning arrival/departure serve ksa and the night variant serve wsa. USA flights might not need to use this airport in that regard (unless if they demolish ksa in the future), maybe a daytime (even afternoon) departure from LAX/SFO and not worry about curfew. Surprised how some airlines have double daily with that route but yet they operate like an hour or so less in between when its should be scatted.
@TransportVlog

I guess we'll have to see what happens. Personally, I'd prefer to get a late night flight, than get up at 4am in catch an early morning flight!

What gets me is that the tram which was extended to Airport West back in 1992, could easily be extended a few more blocks and be an extra access to Tullamarine Airport. @user-kc1tf7zm3b
@user-kc1tf7zm3b 10 месяцев назад
@@TransportVlog My sense is that as we enter the 2030s, the SYD and WSI airports will adopt characteristics and qualities which are similar to the reality of the 2 Tokyo airports at central Haneda and the far more remote Narita which is within a neighbouring prefecture. WSI will not become a serious airport until it has its own direct and fast metro links from the CBD through Bankstown and Parramatta, with the former naturally being more direct. Narita Airport has 2 dedicated express rail links into central Tokyo where the 67km distance can be covered in just 36 minutes. There were plans for a dedicated shinkansen line, but this was abandoned due to local residents’ resistance and the lack of robust land resumption laws. Moreover, this indecisive state of Japanese property laws led to the Narita Airport planning and construction phases having to endure bloody and brutal ‘Sanrizuka Struggle’ resistance where there was multiple loss of life of public officials. A Japanese newscaster likened the May 1978 airport opening to Saigon Airport during the Vietnam War as there were a staggering 14,000 security police on station. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vs6jhn_9xaU.htmlsi=tYoe2cd737DmOKCj

The curfew is a major problem. Sydney's present airport was only supposed to be temporary when it was built, but it's still there in a heavily populated area so it can't be expanded. Hopefully, at some point in the future, the old airport will be closed and it will be used for some other constructive purpose such as housing. When Hong Kong's new airport was opened in the late 90's their old airport (Kai Tak ) was developed into a cruise ship terminal.

@@quarkcypherI don't think that the current airport will ever be closed. Its' proximity to Sydney CBD makes it very convenient for business travellers and those living in eastern Sydney. Sydney will need two airports to cope with future passenger and aircraft traffic volumes. One airport (either KSI or WSI) won't be enough.
@brianmhyung
@brianmhyung 11 месяцев назад
@@quarkcypherI'll be the first one to say NO to closing the existing airport, this is not to say a second airport shouldn't get built. The city benefits from its proximity to the airport so much that we can't afford to just shut it down. It's not like KaiTak, landing was always so challenging and dangerous, the need for expansion was just a perfect justification for an urgent relocation.
