Yes Jeff can you please ask him what he thinks is going on with my MPG ? I purchased a 2021 RAV4 hybrid in October. We’ve only driven it 400 miles ( mostly city) to date and the MPG seems way off. I reset it a few times and it still only averages 29-31,32.

@@billjoang it is your driving style. Check if you always put it in D not B, no roofrack, and your left foot is not on brake. Pulse and glide, you can reach 50 mpg but may piss other drivers behind you off.

Does the inverter/converter use the same coolant type as the radiator,or is there a speacial coolant for it only.?

How do you properly run-in the brakes in a Toyota hybrid? How do I know if the hydraulic brakes are even engaged, since MG2 does much of the braking. I haven't been able to find anything about it.

What real world gas mileage have you experienced?

@@thisismagacountry1318 our 2013 Toyota Auris 1.8litre Touring sports stationwagon hybrid (gasoline) had roughly 0.4 litres per 10 kilometers. Often down to 0.3 on my daily half-hour commute to work with little traffic. Up towards 0.5/0.6 on mountain-drives and more aggressive driving (depending on how hard the acceleration is).

Prius the very best engineered car ever made yup I am 84 and have been in the automotive business from 1964- 1981 my partner and I owned the 3ed largest foreign car shop in San Francisco my partner was the very best there was he came over from Italy in 1962 for the Formula Racing cars he worked for Enzo Ferrari Ive seen them ALL Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Rolls Royce,Jaguar, Austin Healey, Cobra the best of the best at that time, My 2013 Prius has close to 192,000 trouble free miles with one set of Spark Plugs and two sets of break pads and 5,000 miles oil change Synthetic oil and filter, the oil hardly has very little color even at 5,000 miles? I've spent more on tires than everything maintenance wise not counting the oil and filter service?

I am happy to hear your odometer did not stick at 299,999 km.

If you use a electronic safe cable it should be fine

It's not recommended because the hybrid only has a very small 12V battery because it only needs to power a few computers and establish connection to the hybrid battery which provides the power for starting the engine and it doesn't have an alternator but a DC/DC converter which converts the high voltage the hybrid battery is providing into lower voltage to charge the 12V battery. And this system is just overwhelmed with the demand of power from a non hybrid car.

Please talk about engine oil change interval. Both Coolant change intervals and ATFWS transaxle fluid lack of change internals. I have a 2017 Prius 181,000 miles. Toyota dealers in Iowa have a passion to kill these cars off. Can it be done with consumers being told u don't need to do that. Get out of here.

@@2148aa Change your transaxle fluid don’t listen to that lifetime fluid BS. Or if something says 150,000 miles change it out at most 60,000 miles or more often. If an owners manual says change engine oil every 7000 miles or 10,000 miles I would highly not recommend going further than 5000 miles on 100% fully synthetic oil. If you live in cold weather climates and you do a lot of short trips and somebody is cheap and they use regular petroleum oil instead of fully synthetic oil they will most likely be that customer with a clogged up EGR system. They will most likely be the customer who needs an engine after 160,000 miles or less. Let me be that customer with the plugged up failed PVC system due to clogging up of oil accumulation These hybrid transaxles when you do change the fluid can easily go 300,000+ miles. Change the coolant more often than what Toyota says and only use Toyotas high mileage coolant that was recommended for the car do not change coolant two different brands. Never ever top off your coolant system with tapwater that contains iron , calcium, magnesium and other mineral salts that turn your coolant into a electrolyte and cause electrologist corrosion and deposit build ups. When I was a child my dad taught me he said if you don’t like a customer and you want to destroy their car top off the coolant and mix it with tapwater they will be needing heater cores radiators and freeze plugs. If water is ever used you only use distilled water or highly purified reverse osmosis water. Flush the brake fluid system and if you cannot afford to buy it for us to break food system or do it yourself. You can at least get something like a turkey baster and rig up a long thin flexible hose or straw onto it and suck out all the brake fluid in your break fluid reservoir once a year or once every two years and then fill it back up with fresh clean “DRY” brake fluid this is better than nothing. Because brake fluid is extremely hydroscopic absorbs moisture right out of the air and this is what makes it become corrosive and breakdown in cause components to fail

@@jsb04 yes , towards the end of life. You will notice your gas mileage go down a little bit.. You will notice that your battery level trains down faster . You will also notice that your battery charges up faster but there’s not as much capacity . The battery indicator will show that the battery is full . But you will notice discharges, much more faster. So the engine idols longer and idols more often to constantly charge a hybrid battery this reduces your gas mileage for a little bit And because your battery does not have as much capacity to help the engine accelerate more often this also reduces your your miles per gallon.

Yes. Do check up like regular car, fuel plugs, air fiters, tyre presure, wheel alignment, mobil oil and do regularly clean hybrid battery fan filter.

It's most likely the hybrid battery fan filter that nobody ever checks or the mass air flow sensor may need cleaning using MAF cleaner. Scotty Kilmer does a video on it.

As much I agree with everything thing you have said..with that said cars are more complicated to work on than in 1920s for example..i think your local cheaper good mechanic will come around to learning and having the necessary tools

I agree I'm debating between gas and hybrid. My thing is yes you save money but if you need a repair they are not cheap.

@@thisismagacountry1318 True, but like most electronic things, they get cheaper over time. By the time a new vehicle lasts 10 years, my inclination is that by 2030-2031, batteries will be more plentiful and much cheaper than they are today.

Nickel Metal hydride is better for cold temperatures. It’s less affected by extreme cold.

They use the NiMH for the higher trim levels on the Camry. I think it's because it performs better in the cold. LiIon gives better mileage and can stand a higher charge/discharge current but doesn't like extreme cold.

I don't know if it's in all of them but the 2021 Camry Hybrid has both direct and port injection, and the computer switches between the two as conditions demand, so that should take care of the carbon deposits and get the efficiency boosts that direct injection gives.

@@John_Ridley Camry is a premium range. The fact that this problem as been created and unable to resolve without a lot of expense to the customer says a lot about Toyota. Meaning let's meet emissions regulations at the expense to the customer. The same problem exist with all direct fuel injection petrol engine cars. VW TSi engines appear to be a problem at around just 40-,000- 50,000 miles . Food for thought. Another reason for not purchasing hybrids. And just go pure electric, if one can afford it. Which of course many cannot.

Your Hybrid Computer is watching that 12v battery like a hawk. But imo it will last 5-yrs easy and for peace of mind a good Topdon (Amazon) battery gage to actively monitory its health. Its condition depends a lot on where you live as batteries particularly that traction battery dosen't like heat. The 12v battery (probably in the trunk) in a Hybrid really doesn't have to do much. The double click you hear when you turn the key or push the button is connecting the Hybrid traction battery to the Inverter which is it's principal function. It can run the door locks, radio and windows but its not much of a load on the battery

As with any air filter it certainly depends on conditions. If you transport hairy, shedding pets and live on a gravel road, you're going to need to change it more often than someone who drives on pavement with no passengers and clean air.

Yes, you know what the regular battery looks like. The hybrid battery is more of a flat pack like a small rectangular suitcase.

I have a 2007 Camry hybrid, The original 12V battery is AGM deep cycle cost about 400 bucks, the regular lead acid battery cost 110 bucks. When my AGM battery died. I put a cheap regular Lead acid battery in it, been running for a few years without any problem. Size is 24F. The sensor cable I just tape it to battery like original and air tube too. The hybrid drive battery is 34pieces of pancake flat battery modules connected in series around 276volts DC. Battery weighs over 110Lbs. I have replaced 5 pieces of bad cells.

Get a deer guard front end like Pickups use. It'll look funny, but it's worth the money the minute you hit one.

From my experience with hybrids and part of the reason I don't own hybrids anymore is that these engines just don't seem to run as smoothly as a regular car.

Lexus RX vehicles are known amongst mechanics of being one of the most reliable Toyota vehicles has ever made. Change the engine oil and transmission fluid often and you will have a 400,000 mile vehicle.

im in Canada, and cold decrease your mileage per gallon a bit, like any other cars, and the Battery had zero glitch, my car is 5yrs old, no issues ,parked outside. -40 to +40 C.

my friend does city driving, and i do hwy mostly... both Prius, there is no real difference , the system is really good at managing the power distribution. still avg 4.5litre/100kms or apx 50 mpg us.

The 12V battery can still die. It gets charged from the system when the car is running but not when it's sitting. If you let the car sit for 6 months, or leave something discharging it, it can still die, and it's what runs the computers and stuff. Even if the traction battery is full up, if the 12v battery dies the computer can't boot up enough to start the system and charge the 12v battery. I'm guessing the "jump start" of this is extremely easy - it doesn't need to turn the engine over, that is done from the traction battery, the 12V just needs to power up the electronics.
