What's really impressive about Tromso is that despite being far north is that it doesn't have a polar climate or even a subarctic climate but more of a continental maritime climate (similar to northeastern US but with cooler summers). It's a way to experience the Arctic without the vicious cold of a place like Barrow, Alaska. A place that would be really jarring to visit is Alert, Nunavut, Canada. There's actually a brief time where Alert plunges into total darkness, imagine getting no day/night cues from the sky for weeks on end.
Oh wow we couldnt imagine complete darkness during the day! That is actually what we were expecting visiting Tromso and were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful twilight we experienced - breathtaking! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment ☺️
I have to point out to you that your idea of Tromsø area and "not having Arctic climate" isn't on point...and need an update. Tromsø is very much a part of the Arctic ....and has an Arctic climate....whatever mild or not. You need to understand that the Arctic is versatile both in climate, landscape, flora and fauna .....it is not a one size fits all story as you seem to believe. Just for info. I looked up lowest temperatures for Barrow in Alaska ....and found that the most recent cold snap there was in 2006 with a lowest at -55 F. Well....not so far from Tromsø ....a good hours drive.....to a place locate no more than 10 miles away from the sea/salt water....had last January -56 F (lowest for Barrow for 2024 was -35 F). That place would erase every low temperature record Barrow have ever had. That place is not even the coldest place in Norway ....so not so much points for your climate "analyses and insight"..... I must also ask what is "continental maritime climate"....???? .....sorry....there does not exist any term like that....at least not in science where I've been around. ....and yeah....I have some ideas and actual knowledge about these things ....I'm from the Arctic ...and has studied such stuff as meteorology....
@@Dan-fo9dk I'm surprised that areas near Tromso have been getting those temperatures as of late. But then again, maybe I shouldn't as cold snaps have been getting more severe in continental Europe while winters have been getting much milder here in North America. Climate variations in the Arctic vs so-called "polar climate" are two different things as I'm sure you know. Maybe you use a different term but we use terms in the US like "polar climate" or sometimes "Arctic/Antarctic" (depending on hemisphere) to describe it. Maybe we need a new term for a climate whose warmest month never surpasses 10°C as it's not a one-size-fits-all term, because along with excluding certain places in the actual Arctic while including places very much not in the Arctic such as Inukjuak, but those were the terms used in the textbooks I studied so that's what I use. It might just be one of those annoying things about the Koppen climate classification that we have to work around, such as the issues with the "humid subtropical climate" being overly broad, which I'm sure you're aware of. Maybe instead we should just say Group A, Group B, Group C and so on for climate types instead of tropical, temperature, continental, etc.
@@AltoonaYourPiano I've been to tromso this january (we go yearly 2-3 weeks) and we experienced a solid -28°C on the cars display, and I gotta say, I managed to take pics for 4-6 hours usually on -10 to -15°C, that -28 was literally getting out of the car and within 5 minutes everything is freezing
Hello! We were in Tromso early December. We wore 2 layers of pants (thermals and jeans mostly) and 2-4 layers on top, followed by our jackets. We use the Sony A7C camera and a Sony ECMB10 mic for audio. Some clips are with a drone and some with an iPhone, depends on what we are filming. ☺️
Hello there I recently came across your youtube channel < Kristy and Steve > and was impressed by the quality of your content. However, after conducting a comprehensive analysis, I noticed there is room for improvement for your youtube channel for getting more visitors and subscribers. Not doing video optimization and keyword research is not improving your video. The problems I got your channel: 1. Your video title, meta description needs to be improved. 2. Your Thumbnail needs to be more eye-catching. 3. You need to use more relevant ranked tags and low competitive keywords. 4. Also there are many more issues in your video optimization checklist due to which RU-vid algorithm is not delivering your video to your targeted audience. If you solve these problems, hopefully your channel will grow day by day. Thanks & Regards Ayon Ahmed
Great video. If high costs of living and ❄️🏔️🌬️🌨️ keeps the 🤯 I see nothing wrong with living in a beautiful place like this. If I've the 💰💵💴💶💷 spend some of it. Won't do you any good ⚰️. Far as the cold weather. That's the reason there are fire places, coats, and ☕🍵🥃. Would I do it if I could? 🧑🦯🚶🏻♂️🏃🏻💨💨💨💨. As long as I'm living in a peaceful place instead of 😤😠😡🤬. You are blessed to visit places like this. B SAFE 🇺🇸
Completely agree, you make excellent points! We are indeed very blessed to have visited some beautiful places , Tromso being one of them 🇳🇴💕 Where are you from? Thank you for watching!
@Dan-fo9dk You did really well of facts.... better than almost any YT-tourist. But there are a couple of things I would like to point out. When it comes to population numbers of Tromsø....and the students... The university in Tromsø has around 15000 students (not all in Tromsø). Students who are originally not from Tromsø ....are not registered as citizens of Tromsø . The definition of polar night is that it is dark all 24 hours day and night. Hence Tromsø does NOT have polar nights. Nowhere on the mainland of Norway does that occur. The only place where they can claim such is on Svalbard. The southernmost occurrence of polar night ...on the shortest day (northern hemisphere) on 21. Dec is around 72,5 dgr N latitude. You're right about the approximate 350 km distance north of the Arctic Circle ....but you could have added that was direct air distance north/south.....to somewhere far inside Sweden. Norway has not a north-south orientation. The further north you go the more eastward the incline will be. So driving along the main road from the Arctic Circle and north to Tromsø will be 580 km and a ferry. It will take the better part of 9 hours ....at summer time.....
Hi thanks for posting, what month were you there please. I am nervous of being cold and slipping on ice. Where did you get the cute mitten/gloves Kristy
Hello! We filmed this at the start of December. Just make sure you have a good quality pair of boots and warm clothing, you'll be fine - its absolutely beautiful ❄️ I bought the black gloves from a ski shop in Sapporo, Japan and the pink mittens from a market in Riga ☺️ Thanks so much for watching!
@@KristyandSteve Yes, you should find it on restaurant menus. Not all restaurants, of course, but some. I am in Bergen, and know of several places they serve it. But since most whaling is done in Northern Norway, I would think it would be even more common in Tromsø.
Another brilliant video guys it's funny when you was both in the mountains in innsbruck Austria you was both so amazed by the snow because you never see it, now you have both seen more snow than some people will do in their lifetime 😂 the dome look well good as well, any really looking forward to the next on I'm guessing I'm going to hear some dogs barking 🙈😂 anyway catch you soon guys 👍👌👋
Thanks Chris! Yes we certainly experienced our fair share of snow this Europe trip that's for sure. We never got sick of it either -which surprised us!🤣 Next video is full of fun winter activities we have never tried before, hope you enjoy! 🐕⛷️⛄️
Great airport in our opinion! Very small and was undergoing some type of renovation for a portion of it (near check in areas) but everything was clearly marked. Seemed pretty officiant and our plane was on time so we had a good experience. Its only 10-15min on the bus from the city centre of Tromso so we were all-round very happy ☺️
@@KristyandSteve Hi guys, also coming here to say that the link is not showing there in the description, please at least say the name of the place and then we can look for it on google.🙏
Hello! The link is in the description. Send us a msg on Instagram if you cant find it, or have any questions. There is no name for it per se, you can try googling "Arctic Dome Tromso Accomodation" or a variation of those words ☺️
The first thing i will think of if i think Norway is how crazy expensive everything is💰💸and i don't understand why 🤔Sweden is way cheaper than the other Nordic country's 🤑👍
We did notice Stockholm was quite a bit cheaper. Honestly though, Australia (and possibly Singapore) where we are from, is the most expensive place in the world in our opinion. Norway didn't shock us - apart from those pints at the end! 😯
Yes,i have heard about Australia Singapore that you mentionedand i can tell you that Island is a very expensive place to ifyou haveany plans to go west🤔😁@@KristyandSteve
A small comment on reindeer. Don't overcook it. It actually just need a few min on each side. You should also serve it with "tyttebærsyltetøy" (cranberry jam). A good sauce is also good work the meat
Anyone know if its worth to go around the 20/03 i was thinking of going to see the northern lights but checking its seems it'll have bad weather and a full moon
If i were to recommend anyone seeing the northern lights here in Tromsø, i would say between November and February. As a local, i cant show any statistics on this but i've just experienced it more often between those months.
Thanks very much guys! Yes the dome was very "cool" in every sense of the word haha! 🥶 Steve was on drone duty and captured the landscape brilliantly, such an incredible part of the world. Hope you're having a great time exploring NZ! 🍻🤗
Steve you are a very lucky man indeed, to have such a natured kind woman like Kristy - ( Personality Plus ). Yes I'm jealous. Since I found you on the Internet I have watched several of your Videos and I cannot fault them, except for the Frosty Beard ha! ha! keep going you beautiful couple. Take Care. John Mc 🤠 Many years I was in minus 12 degrees at Perisher.
Hi John! That is very kind of you to say , I (Kristy) really appreciate your lovely words and will be sure to pass this on to Steve 🤣 We are so glad you are enjoying our videos, thank you for your support and encouragement - it means a lot 🙏
great presentation of my hometown 🫶🏻 just a quick funfact: the church that you thought looked a bit out of place is actually norway's only wooden protestant cathedral, built in 1861. in those days most of the town consisted of wooden buildings obviously, but there's been multiple fires since then and now we have the architectural clusterfuck (pardon my french) that is tromsø, but i love it 😍
Hello! Thanks so much for the info ☺️ Your incredibly lucky to be from such a beautiful, breathtaking part of the world! We honestly couldn't believe a place like this existed - loved Tromso! 🇳🇴❤️
