READ:
After concluding day two of chasing the 4014 out of Cheyenne, we end up in the railroad town of North Platte. Before heading back to the Denver Airport, we make a quick stop at Cody Park, home of the only other Challenger type locomotive still in existence. Enjoy the walk-around & cab tour =)

3985's only surviving relative, and the only Challenger on public display. Looks beautiful. Seems like they take very good care of it. And to this day, I'm amazed that only 3977 and 3985 are the sole survivors of 100+ Challenger locomotives.

You can tell the folks in North Platte love the old giant. 3977 seems magnificently maintained compared to a lot of other steam engines on display in parks. Amazing footage you got here.

Nice guided tour around the locomotive. Lots to know and think about to operate one these gentle giants. Much respect to the guys who made a career of it.

Nice presentation . This class of locomotive an icon of engineering marvel . To be the fireman and engineer on one of these machines that require a multi tasking maze of just not the bells and whistles . Complex as it was demonstrates the above learn skill and knowledge of physics to operate and run these beast .

Hell of a tour Brother, you sure sound like you know your stuff. I am Florida Man so it's a long walk to see this one in person, maybe one day. In the meanwhile i enjoy the 3977 in O scale, probably my favorite locomotive, i'm a sucker for the Grayhounds

It's not likely at all, or never for this case, but I would love to see this Challenger run again.

@@Gabethenwr77 and how exactly do you plan on doing that?

@@dillonohlemiller401 the oil tank was removed when 3985 was removed. So unless another oil tank can be built, we aren’t seeing this running again. Thankfully, the 3985 is being restored now.

@@davidng2336 Maybe they should do 3985 in Greyhound, and the elephant ears too :))

This engine was operational in the pacific northwest for the Portland rose passenger train

That's really interesting how the Union Pacific used such large engines on passenger trains, the Santa Fe is the only other I know of that more than rarely used articulated engines of this size for that work (they had Mallets though). The Challengers were also used on troop trains in World War II (I'm not sure if they were used similarly during the Korean War, but they might have since they ran until the late 50s).

Glad to see that UP Challenger 3977 was preserved for public display viewing and the "greyhound" paint scheme is very attractive looking on this locomotive, this paint scheme was used on UP rr passenger equipment between 1946 to 1952 and this paint scheme has a fantastic appearance.

Wow! You really know your steam engines. I can't believe people threw their trash into the firebox. Whew! What jerks.
