I really miss our 2012 1181, the 1172 came out the next year. The 1191 was also an option at the time, it had the corner outside door just like the 1172 was to have, but the 1181 had a second large clothes closet to the right of the refrigerator as the dinette slide was that much longer. We used to bring in a zero gravity chair for relaxing when we needed a break since we did not have a couch option or a second slide. We visited a lot of dispersed camping areas in southern Wyoming and central Colorado, we camp hosted many times in it. At the time our cell amp was only 3G, so we are dating ourselves a bit and it was amazing what we did with those two 80Ah AGM batteries that lasted over 7 years. Thanks for bringing back so many great memories! I predict a lot of folks RV traveling the second half of this summer!

Are Truck Campers built for specific pick ups, or will they generally fit on any pick up truck you buy? Obviously the truck has to be big enough to handle the weight, that much I know.

Lance builds a nice Camper unit. I’m not bashing or being disrespectful. My OPINION ONLY. If you are on the road, older, and need to get to the potty: Don’t buy this unit. One must open both slides to get to the toilet. Whenever you stop for any reason, MAKE DARN SURE YOU STOP ON LEVEL GROUND before activating slides. If you don’t, the slides can either go off track, making grinding like noises, or, completely shut down. The rear slide is the worst. As IT HAS NO emergency manual method of cranking rear slide back in. Rear slide must be jumped by placing a wire on a hot lead. Only Lance can tell you exactly how. Ignore this sentence if Lance has upgraded or improved this worrisome condition. Think HEAVY pickup PayLOAD in the truck bed. Don’t try buying a 2006 GMC one ton dually long bed for a good price thinking you are going to be able to haul this monster around the country. Even with thousands of dollars in suspension upgrades this Lance Mega camper might still be too much for your truck to handle. Emergency stopping at freeway speeds could very well cause you serious harm either during swerving to avoid an obstacle in front of you, but also suddenly having to slow down. Bad time to come to the reality brakes are overwhelmed, unable to do there job. Its scary. Rear step: Second day after buying mine, I scraped mine leaving a steep driveway an bam! I bent my step. Oops 😬 Electrical: This unit is a POWER hound! Three way power frig will suck down dealer supplied deep cycle wet cell batteries within 22 hours if left unattended. Do not park this unit on or at an angle over certain degree say on the side of a dirt road putting the unit in a leaning to one side. If you do this, the frig will go into 12 volt only mode. There is a safety mode causing the LP to be cut off. Auto mode should restore or switch back to LP, but in mine that was not the case. Only way to know, is to get off the road again only on a flat pull over spot, get out, and listen to the outside refrigerator access door, hope you hear the gas burner working or NOT working. If its not working, you must open all the slides an re-activate/check the frig condition meter and hope you do not see a check light on. Mine, it was always on. Lastly, there is a high-speed computer fan that comes on an off to keep heat buildup in the back of your frig. It is irritating at night as you can hear it come on an off. IT SUCKS battery power. I am not any fan of three way powered RV refrigerators under made by Norcold, or Dometic. Terrible. Troublesome. The processors that control them can short out and BAM! You and your food done. 12 volt compressor driven are THE ONLY WAY to go in my opinion. But, they are expensive. “SO WHAT!!!” The basement at the rear slide!!! Became adorned with scrape marks of flesh from my head knocking into it all the time. I’m an old geezer, its what we do. I’m out!

This is the nicest truck camper I've ever seen. It's also one of the best, most detailed and well filmed and edited walk throughs I've ever seen. Both of you nailed this. Also, not for nothing, but the lady often smiles when she concludes this or that section inside, and she has one of the most warm and bright smiles I've ever seen.

Man this was an excellent walk thru. The cut away shots were great and well timed to show how things worked, without having face time. Both of you did a great job with your presentations. No over explaining...just right. Excellent job. The 1172 surprised me with the dry bath, storage, and space. More than it looks, even with your dogs. Thanx for the show, and safe travels!

6 months. Wow. We looked at a Lance truck camper while at the Tampa RV Super Show- where we also met you guys 🤗- i think we could handle most of the tiny living but we are worried about the bed. My husband has RA. That’s why we went full time. Help with his health. We want to “go north” next summer. You guys set up your Lance quite well. We have two dogs too. Good to see there is room. We have a 3500 Ram Longbed Dually so we could do a truck camper with slides. Good to see the hand crank for the slide. We had a broken slide issue. Thorough r tour. Thanks. Stay safe. Alice

Nice tour of your 1172. We currently have an Lance 992 and are pricing out a 2022 Lance 1172 for delivery next spring. They’ve changed interior decor colours and have made lots of options now standard equipment and made many improvements. We opted for 2 lithium batteries 2 100W solar panels and a 2500W generator. We were very happy with our 992 and decided to stay with Lance. We like the slide outs for the room they provide inside compared to hard side campers.

This would be a perfect RV for us to travel in full time. Only problem is our truck isn't big enough to haul it. LOL. I love the set up. The table and couch areas are perfect. I need/want a table and this one has the regular table and the smaller one for the couch/ recliners. Hubby could use the recliner and the smaller table and leave the table for my computer use. I tend to put everything up so I can still use the table. Lots of choices. I love it.

Nice rig, with a little effort you could triple your solar capacity that would reduce your dependence on the truck alternator. Also your inverter is stuck in a corner, and doesn't look like it's well ventilated. Overheating will reduce it's life and performance. Finally do you happen to know the R value, can you use it in the winter? Are the tanks insulated and heated?

I thoroughly enjoyed your Go North vacation. I just wish I had the time to take such a trip. So after doing it in a truck camper, would you ever try to do it with your 5th wheel? Has your view of RV’ing changed since taking this trip? Would you look into a 4x4 class C or downsize to a truck camper? The one thing I did take off this series was my interest in a side entry truck camper and love of the 1172 has only grew since watching this series. Does Lance plan to offer any of the improvements you did to the camper before going to Alaska? (The water heater and heater would be a great idea). Did you do a video on the communication antennas you added? What were your thoughts on performance in the back woods? If you were to take the trip again, what would you do differently? Sorry for all the questions! Hope you can make it out to the East coast someday and check out the truck camper warehouse and the great woods of Maine, white mountains of NH and VT.
@garbinator09
@garbinator09 4 года назад
Scott W - Happy to lend my experiences. Forget about backwoods exploration. Units just too big, as most forest service roads (see unpaved) are too narrow. Continuing on guarantees pine branches scrapping hitting your roof air, including the sides of your camper. BLM land, desert roads rugged off-camber puts bunches of stress on the entire unit. When negotiating a rut say from a serious rain, as you enter the rut unbalancing begins causing your unit to start rocking back and fourth. Side to side as it can get rather scary if never experienced. Keep in mind we are talking about weight. Lots of it on a consumer grade vehicle. Not an overbuilt Combat heavy Truck designed for battlefield conditions. Or say Logging operations.

Tom, we are 'in the process' of building/buying a Host Cascade 10.6 truck camper which is only slightly different than your Lance 1172. I am planning (1) 24v 190AH 5KwH LiFePO4 battery- which will fit into the OEM location, while weighing 72Lbs. instead of @ 140Lbs. I'm also planning to carry a Wen 2,350 W Inverter Generator (56235i) so we can run our Dometic Penquin II 11,000 BTU low profile AC with a MicroAir Easy Start 364 installed. Originally, I was torn between an Aims 'Green' 2,500W inverter/charger & a Victron 3,000W Multi-plus, but- based on MAX need, I believe that I can go down to a 2,000 Watt inverter charger. I think (hope?) I can fit 5 170 Watt flexible solar panels on the roof (no drilling & PP sheet mounted to protect the roof and allow for airflow). This would provide 800+ Watts of solar while only adding @ 50Lbs. to the roof. Since we will initially follow the warmer weather (1st year or so), do you think this is 'enough' battery & solar for a mid 50's married couple with a coffee obsession & the constant need for noise (TV, radio or streaming content). We are internet based adults, and, need to charge laptops, tablets, cell phones, drone batteries... I was hoping that 'load sharing' with the (2) 7.5 gallon propane cylinders: heat, stove top, refrigerator and occasional use of the gas generator would provide enough since we prefer to boondock (7 to 1) over plug in campsites. I think we have similar H20, black & gray tanks (65g H20, 38g gray and 42g black). Is this enough?

No blk tank just gray & fresh so more & less but can still dump into camp ground or use 2 cassettes instead. Small camper something has to give. By not hving under counter plumbing can hve pull out cabinet in a cabinet for more counter space in walk side or in front of stove. Other brand Northern has rear bath that makes cassette system poss. Like their steps & under camper floor storage.

We do alot of primitive camping in Utah, Colorado and Arizona. What kind of tires did you put on your truck for extra piece of mind . Most of our camping choices require several miles of graded dirt roads and forest service roads. If I decide to do Dempster hiway I want to upgrade my tires on my duelly from stock.

Hi guys! Nice videos!! In your experience during the "Go North Expedition" was ever a need of having a winch? If you ever do it again will you consider installing one? Thank you!!
@MortonsontheMove
@MortonsontheMove 3 года назад
We did not use a winch for our Go North trip, but we would definitely consider having one in the future. It's always a handy thing to have on a truck if you do a lot of off-roading. :)

I like the truck camper @ show w/ flat bed dually wide & 2 work boxes per side & I/God want my 450 4 by 4 to dump as well. So work or play or tow or offroad camp 4 season.
@smallnuts2

I can't decide between a trailer or slide in camper. The reason why is a certain vehicle can do well on gas. Like a sienna minivan 27 mpg highway can tow 3500. But then, I've always like slide in campers.

Kait & Tom ThankYou for the tour of the Lance truck camper . Are you missing it now ? How did you like the truck itself compared to own Dodge truck ? Belated Happy Easter to Ya's . Hope Ya''s are safe & staying healthy . My cousin Beth is quarantined at home with the Covid 19 virus . She works for KEY Bank in Middletown , New York . She & her husband are using separate bathrooms & sleeping in separate bedrooms. Her husband is OK but is staying home . He works in Personnel for Kohls Department Stores .

We do miss it, I think we will be getting a TC for more adventures some day. Compared to the dodge... hmm, well the new truck was nice, but i truthfully was happy to climb back into my old truck too. I still like my cummins better, more low end torque and way easier to work on. Just my opinion.
@MrAdamNTProtester

@@MortonsontheMove I'd rather push a dodge Cummins than drive any ford... especially a ford diesel post def... looks like godzilla puked up an autozone under that hood...I seriously have seen greater order on a plate of spaghetti than under the hood of a new ford diesel

Only suggestion I would have would be to put a set of tire chains in your truck as a truck driver with a few miles behind me that would solve your muddy road problems when you chain up 4wheel drive isn't needed
@steveleonard1227
@steveleonard1227 4 года назад
Did you find the dually rear axle hampered your off-road capabilities? That issue came up as we were planning our cross-Canada 2018 truck camper trip to the west coast & to Tuk. The on-line consensus was that single tires were better.
@jamesvelvet3612
@jamesvelvet3612 4 года назад
Truck campers this size don't go "off road". That is for Jeeps. These monsters stick to gravel or dirt roads and a dually is fine for that. People seem to have this idea if a road isn't paved it must be "off road"...

Neither the dinette bed nor the sofa bed in back appears to be good for anyone taller than 5 feet tall (if that). Seems like the space could be used for something better.
