This is truly a epic greenhouse tour video unlike any I've done previously. Big thanks to Jacobe (@enchantedcactus) Moses N @ogmoses and @tadayoshi_kono for making it a great experience.

Steven Hammer has done extensive work on several of the genera Mesembryanthemaceae, but has concentrated, over a period of twelve years, on his research on Conophytum. He has travelled extensively in the regions in which conophytums are to be found, and has unearthed several new taxa. His book "The Genus Conophytum" brought order to the previous taxonomic chaos in which the genus, by virtue of its size and bewildering diversity, has existed.
He is regarded internationally as one of the foremost authority on the mesembs and the foremost authority on Conophytum. He maintains probably the largest collection of mesembs at his home. His extensive articles on Conophytum and other mesemb genera, published in the society's journal, ALOE, the journal of the Mesemb Study Group (UK) and in other international succulent plant journals, are well known.
The first greenhouse we tour houses the plant collection of the late great Jurgen Menzel a collector and grower from the San Diego area. He traveled the deserts of the world collecting plants and seeds (when It was legal) and is responsible for many of the rare and miniature plant species in cultivation in the United States today particularly when it comes to the genus turbinicarpus...

The natives want to oppress us cactus enthusiasts by keeping it contraband on account that it will be threatened by field collecting, but you know what cattle ranchers, railroads and factories are leaving root plowed plants in their wake so we need to keep this kosher for everyone because captivity just may be it's last hope.

I agree with you. If you believe in global warming, these plants need to be in greenhouse conditions.

That fist nursery made my ocd go into overdrive. 😵‍💫. I’m sure they would have no problem finding volunteers to help them out. If they cleaned up that place up and gave some TLC to those amazing oldies people would pay to go there.. I mean I would.

❤ Amazing collection. Thanks for sharing. IMO, you have come a long way as far as using weird and random exclamations. Your videos are put together in a more professional manner than some of the previous ones. Jurgen must have been an incredible collector. Also, adding Mr. Hammer in this episode makes it epic, indeed. Thank you young man, for your enthusiasm and dedication in making these videos

When watching a video about cacti, I can't help but feel amazed and in awe of their wild beauty. Cacti with their rough branches and delicate leaves exude life and toughness of the desert. I feel like I'm drawn to their resilience and uniqueness. It's fascinating to know that cacti can survive in some of the harshest conditions on earth, where water is scarce and humidity is low. They can also exist in dry and sandy environments. This shows that life can thrive in places where we think it's impossible. Witnessing the uniqueness and vitality of cacti makes me feel impressed and more respectful of nature. We need to preserve and protect their habitats so that they can continue to exist and flourish in this world.

Dude, I LOVE your videos but it killed me watching you just skim over those other genus like they were nothing just to skip straight to the Copiapoa. Don't get me wrong, they're a beautiful genus but please take the time to talk about something that isn't a Copiapoa/Astrophytum/Ariocarpus 😭 the amount of Mammillaria that were flowering. The Cleistocactus and the Eriosyce. There was a whole table of beautiful Echinocereus that you didnt even look at😭

What an epic episode. It is, however, terribly sad watching those old plants being so neglected. I want to jump in so bad with some desperately-needed TLC. Fresh soil mixes, bigger pots, optimized water and feeding schedules, more organization in general.. I could go on. Breaks my heart. But awesome road-trip with awesome people.

"and they wont sell any" Its not a coin collection these plants are alive and will slowly fade away without proper care and if they finally do decide to sell they could be worthless. But I really couldn't tell what was going on at that first big nursery tour it looked like growing plants for sale mixed with a very old collection that was going to be fixed up maybe ? IDK ?

So, where is Steve Hammer? I've been watching for almost 4 mins. now and that don't look like Steve's Sphaeroid Institute. I guess the first place for this Jurgen guy? Anyway did you say where this greenhouse is located? It's obviously somewhere that copiapoas like. I've never seen that genus represented by such old plants. I have to agree with another commenter - those plants need some attention. Just looking at all those oxalis fruits ready to burst and spray seeds everywhere. Bad juju. So what is the deal here? Why are these plants just dying? Who is responsible for this growing operation? I would be ashamed to have people walk around in my house with such neglect in evidence. I expect that there will be a BIG CONTRAST once you get to Steve's collections! He wouldn't allow such neglect for one millisecond!

oh man, the mother plants department is an absolute disaster! that looks like a garbage dump to me. the heart of the gardener can only cry or be angry! the other houses and stocks don't look any better. Hardly identifiable species, all mixed up crossed. something like that is no fun. this is absolute chaos! sorry, i don't want to be a negative prophet, but our ideas about the nature and culture of plants differ too much.
