We took a visit to see our friends over at the St. Pete Ecovillage in St. Petersburg, FL a couple of weeks ago & are happy to be able to take you along for an introduction! We share some exciting content from the community food forest & garden while we tour through the 1/4 acre urban agriculture educational site with their garden manager Lev Pasikhov.
We will be sharing additional interviews & footage from this one-of-a-kind project with a couple of our other friends who are making some great waves, as well! Be sure to subscribe so you can be notified as those videos upload.

Wow, l live about 5 miles north of this place and didn't even know it existed. l'm in a 26 acre condo complex called The Enclave and l'm in charge of everything that goes in the ground. l'm in The Florida Native Plant Society and convinced my condo board to let me start clearing all the invasives and got them to agree to go completely native. We have a 4-5 acre wooded site in the middle with a large pond that we've got over half cleared and another 3-4 acre site off to the side cleared a bit. St Pete is in the most densely populated county by around double, so for us to have that much green space is HUGE. So much permaculture potential, but my native philosophy would make it hard. Native insects etc rely on native plants, so in such a densely populated area, they really need our help. l'll DEFINITELY be checking this place out and volunteering!!!

Mate check out the Green Powerhouse system, you can power it off invasive species and the by-products are Fertiliser, fresh water, biochar and electricity.

Same, and if you think about it "building soil" could be similar to fixer up houses and flipping houses. Buy a lot with bad soil conditions work with it for a few years, sell for profit.

@@b-b8704 Building the soil.... Most ppl think you stick plants in dirt and you get food. If you want the most from your food they have to have good soil to draw from. They will grow but they wont be as nutritious. Building good soil is beneficial for us and the plants 😀 It makes me happy to see people taking this seriously instead of using chemicals to make their plants big

Oh the tropical fruit! Papayas sprouting in the compost heap. If only I could. But we get ten below in winter. Great tour. I hope five years later you're still growing strong. On a humorous note: If I put a sign up like you have "Food Not Lawns" my house might get burnt down. Meanwhile, I've got a small acre of wild food forest garden full of life and my somewhat frustrated neighbors are kept at bay. I'm glad there's a huge community and we're growing in numbers. People are seeing how permaculture/food forests mean life.

Hello from Northern Australia! Salad Mallow, and Kang Kong are my primary greens during our blisterig hot wet season up here. The best things about the salad mallow is it LIKES the heat, doesn't suffer root rot or mildew when it pours with rain and we've got 100% humidity and the bugs leave it alone. The leaves are very mild tasting and are good in salads or as a cooked green - makes and awesome spinach substitute in Summer. Cheers, ~D.

What's salad mallow ? I wonder if it's the plant I have growing in my yard. I bought it as greens in an Asian market. They had some roots attached so I planted the bottoms and they've grown all summer long. It's some kind of hibiscus clearly but it seems there are several edible hibiscus.

I like his comments on building up your soil. That’s been my mantra here on my property in north Florida for over 40 years. Keep adding organic matter, compost, manure, green manure, etc... and the soil will grow great food crops. I also add Azomite for a trace element source. Plant disease resistant varieties for your area helps with diseases plus crop rotation.

Absolutely on board with you. I'm into feeding my soil at this point. And the more alive the soil gets, the hungrier it gets. When I harvest bio-mass (aka weeding) and lay it in place to compost in place, it can disappear in two weeks. The soil digests everything I can feed it. I'm always looking for free bio-mass (from locals who don't use poisons on everything). Autumn is great. Leaves, sticks, dead/dying plants and grasses. When I hit the lottery I get a huge pile of local wood chips. Long comment but you understand how we are when we talk gardens. Cheers

I do this as well in Ontario Canada, but here in Ottawa, we are not allowed to grow vegetables on our front lawn from the middle of the lawn to the curb. But I have still planted 2 apple trees, a pear tree, 5 cedars, a sumac, 4 black currant bushes, 2 rose bushes, a red currant bush, a rhubarb patch, a sage patch and a mint patch as well as 4 raised vegetable gardens all in our front yard. We aren't finished. The birds have returned to my yards. It's very lush. People who go on walks through our neighborhood often stop to see our yard. All around us the neighborhood has bare green lawns or cement parking lots.

We're only an hour or so from here! I would love to bring my home schoolers here. We homestead on the Nature coast and I am struggling with the good ol' sand sand sand everywhere. I've got access to swamp muck and rabbit manure but getting so much all at once has become an issue. I'd like to see more of this setup in an urban space, then hopefully bring some ideas back to our 200 acres (we have cows so I cant really use more than probably 20 for food forest). Thanks for such a great informative video ❤

I had some things growing here and there but when I was told that the tree trimming companies appreciate dumping their wood chips at your property I went up to the first one I saw. Within a week they showed up. It saves them a dumping fee and you get a great amendment to your sandy soil. I first put the chips around my little trees, my heat stressed lemon tree perked up within a week and we had a load of Myer lemons this winter. 👍

I would love to create front and back yard kitchen gardens but styled like an English garden with gravel walkways, raised beds. Want to keep bees like my papaw did.

Could you post a link to video number two please? I'm having a hard time figuring out which of your many videos might be the continuation. Thanks- this was very inspirational!

I'm always jealous of people that live in warm climate. They got longer growing season! The host is so cute! If i was young again I marry him!!!lol

I have a pro tip for people looking to get started that most likely don't own a tiller a good way to get a garden started is by a bunch of big tarps lay them covering the area where you want your garden to be hold them down with rocks logs breaks anything heavy because the wind will blow them around obviously leave that sitting there for a good few months 3 is enough and this will kill all the grass and when you take the tarp off you will have soft soil that you can plant in easily also recommend that you have a bunch of mulch on standby and cover the bare ground with mulch so that you don't have So many weeds coming back
