Summer, I love your humbleness when that employee complimented you “sounds like you know your plants”. You don’t claim to be “an expert” and recognize that you are still learning and discovering things about the plant world along with your viewers. Thank you for you dedication and great educational content! 💙

Spot on regarding the root Mealy bugs. Even if you grow them in habitat here in South Africa, it is the main problem. The only way I notice is if I know a succulent should wake up and grow and I see no new growth. Either for winter or summer growers. If they don't start growing, I check the roots and repot. If the succulent looks dehydrated for a long period (it should plump up within 24-48h after watering) it could be root Mealy. If the plant was recently repotted or has sensitive roots I would flush the pot with water and surfactant (e.g. soapy water). This will remove a good portion of Mealy as well as bacteria (but few succulents require a specific bacterial microbiome for continued growth and bacteria can be added back in after the root Mealy bugs have been dealt with). It works on Gasteria, Haworthia, Crassula, Aloe, Asclepiads etc. so I adopted it as a nice management plan for potted succulents.

Thanks for your sage tips. Even above ground mealies look as of the plant is dehydrated. Good recommendations to folks to look for them both above and below ground!

I begun my succulent collecting just last year and its very addicting🤣. Whats interest me is how each one of them grow differently. Propagation is also more fun. Seeing them grow and get mature till their flowering stage is totally rewarding. Love the tours. Another great video👍

Regarding the resilience of Kalanchoe plants: my mother's neighbor had about 10 or more kalanchoe delagoensis plants. We live in Houston, TX and unfortunately most of them died after the weird winter storm in February that blacked out most of Texas. Luckily, a couple of them managed to make a comeback! I found a fallen bud from one of them on the ground and my mother's neighbor let me keep it. I went and visited my mom and set my little bud on the table and the next thing I know, she set a large serving dish on top of it and squashed most of its little leaves! I planted it in a tiny nursery pot immediately when I got back home and she is now thriving and has grown so much! I honestly thought she wouldn't make it after getting crushed. Kalanchoe are tough as nails. 💪

Wow, super interesting and so many gorgeous succulents to see. What a nice guy the curator is, and I really appreciate the mealy bug tip for looking into the roots and changing out the soil every so often. Just the other day I noticed my Crassula Ovata has mealybugs. Hate them!

Ahhhh, my stomping grounds. I grew up In Kingsbridge and went to school in Riverdale. I would always go to Wave Hill after school ( I would sneak in. This was a long time ago. Shhhhh.) I loved walking the trails, checking out the greenhouses, and sneaking out to the train tracks by the Hudson River. I know this sounds cliche but it felt very magical to me. It was harder for me to go to the Botanical Gardens on a daily basis, so Wave Hill was my spot. Loved that you ventured out to the Bronx and included Wave Hill in your episode.

I've had to deal with them for a while now. So far I've only found them in my succulents. You'll notice that the plant will stop growing and basically stay the same size for a long time. Also the lower leaves wilt off and die rapidly. When you uproot the plant, you'll see that the roots are covered in a white fluff. Also the mealy bugs are usually clustered around the roots which are just below the soil and not too deep. You can wash the roots thoroughly with water, then dunk em in a solution of soap water and neem oil for 15 mins and plant them into fresh soil.

I would think releasing some predatory mites (stratiolaelaps scimitus) upon them should work. They will establish themselves in the soil and eat the eggs and larvae of various insects... worked for my fungus gnat infestation!
