Hello, Lovely house, great presentation. The finish on the woodwork and staircase structure have been altered. The painted woodwork may well have been grained to resemble fine hardwoods when it was first installed. Only stripping a very small section of the woodwork in an inconspicous locaction will determin if the baseboards, door and window casings are hardwoods to match the doors, or were originally painted to look like the fine hardwood doors. In many fine houses, only the wood that received ware from handeling, such as staircase handrailings and doors, would have been hardwood. Of course, the furniture was often the same type of wood as the room's woodwork. Painted finishes such as grained and marbelized woodwork have a long history, but the Victorians raised them to a spectacular quality. The painted graining on the doors and woodwork in a home I restored in Denver was so good that they tricked a hardwood lumber dealer untill he examined it from less than a foot away. Staircases with mid-point landings became popular after the mid 1800s, although because the footprint of such a staircase was longer, they took up more room, and required a more complex structure. As a result of this, they were more expensive, and thus not common. The square section hollow box staircase newelposts on the first floor, stair landing and at the second floor level are the result of an alteration of perhaps 1910. The hand railings and spindles (balusters) appear to be original. The newelpost on the staircase to the third floor, and those above it, are faceted cones with a wide circular cap. They are original. The newel in the front hall would have matched the second and third floor faceted cones. Those on the first floor were often decorated with inset panels decotated with fine hardwoods. Again, a very nice home, although I would restore the woodwork and recreate the original newels on the stairs.

I cannot help thinking that this house would have been fabulous for my grandparents, they married in 1892 & had 10 kids by 1911....!!!!

My home is a double brick built in 1887. It has almost exact woodwork except all windows (yes lots of windows) are original including hand blown glass, window panes. Original claw foot tub, floors, air grates, banister etc. I love this house.

This place just needs some TLC and elbow grease and it would be stunning! I don't think I have ever seen a landing on a staircase that continues straight up? Another great tour. Thanks Ken (have a great weekend!) 🤗

Lots of cosmetic work needed for this place, but there are at least a few features that are worth restoring. If I were to buy this, I'd re-do the master bathroom!

I always forget that Ken’s height is 6 ft. Because every time he shows these houses he appears to be so short!!! Those doors, entry ways and ceilings are so much more grand. Love your show Ken!!!!

Ken it's nice to see you recovering. I agree with Chuck and Max this home needs some TLC.Calib from the 2nd Empire Strikes Back will be pleased that there is a half bath on the 1st floor.

Tons of work needed: kitchen gut job, bathrooms too, total redo of wall and trim colours, repair of water damage to third floor ceiling and complete reno of that floor, plus whatever is going on in the basement re HVAC and hot water, etc., back and front garden landscaping. Sadly looks like a flip. The thickness of the wood floors on the second floor re the brick hearths seem to indicate that the new floor was simply laid over the old without looking at possible subfloor issues. Has the wiring and interior plumbing been completely brought up to standard or is there knob and tube hidden in those walls? Too many questions, but if you had the money to do the work sure would be worth it.

Look at the Zillow listing. The woodwork is white & the walls are lighter pink, not coral/orange. "This House" needs a better camera/lense/lighting...🤷‍♀️

Zillow says the house was built in 1885. Is that incorrect?
@ThisHouse
@ThisHouse 2 года назад
Great question! Due to a fire at the tax office around the turn of the century, the exact construction dates of many homes were lost and subsequently "guessed" by the tax office later on. Though tax records show that the house was built in 1885, the true construction date was found to be 1860 by local historian Nathan Jackson who referenced older maps showing the home existing before the tax date.

@@ThisHouse Thank you! Then my hunch was right. I grew up in St. Louis and this house doesn't look 1880s to me at all.

It’s a nice row house, but compared to Caleb’s 2nd Empire row house of Mr. Brown it’s a little sad, I would have to strip all the paint off of everything to get back down to the original wood and replace the tile floors in the bathroom, the kitchen would need a complete makeover , new cabinets and counters, appliances etc. the room on the outside of the kitchen is most likely what is used as the dining room as there is a pass through from the kitchen and that would need a do over, I would have to go to I don’t know how many salvage yards searching for vintage trim, fireplaces and mantle tiles to get the place looking original and I noticed some water damage on the top of the third floor ceiling which probably means a new roof as well, you made no mention of a basement and I’m sure it has one which I’d like to see as well as the yard space and whether or not there is a garage, also being that it is St. Louis a map of the neighborhood because there can be some scary places down there. The price would have to be unbeatable for me to trade what I have now and move there, but it does have hope for someone. Thanks Ken for another great tour, it seems like your leg is getting better. Kaleb's house is astonishing, just the amount of work he has been putting into it! Hopefully, someone will see this one and want to give it the TLC it deserves. This is in the Lasalle Park neighborhood. We did a short video about it last year. I'll link it below for you. It is a pretty nice neighborhood that has been on the rebound for the last decade or so. Nathan Jackson also made a post on Facebook that includes the basement photos, I'll link that below as well. The colors and kitchen are pretty meh, but I am glad someone saved this property from falling to bits. Pretty much cosmetic upgrades needed, and if a buyer was willing to hunt down period fixtures to restore the bathrooms, it would be a gem. The high ceilings and room sizes are great. For me, though, the stair halls cause a bit of claustrophobia as does seeing your neighbor's brick wall right out side your window. Out here on the hacienda (LOL, kidding) I like my space. I'll check out the basement photos. Thanks, Ken.

There are many old houses that can be restored. Unfortunately many are located in unsafe cities that have mayors that are soft on crime. What good is restoring such homes if you end up being killed on the street?
