Recently I had the opportunity to spend 24 hours at a Catholic Monastery, living the life of a monk. During that time, Br. Ignacio Gonzalez, one of the monks at the abbey, was kind enough to show me around the Abbey's chapel, pointing out some of the key features of a Catholic monastery chapel and some unique artistic elements of this chapel specifically. In so doing, we even touch on topics like ad orientum vs versus populum and the speed of change in monasteries.

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a RU-vid channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 23 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

The monk was very honest about his life , what he enjoys, struggles with and living in a community. These type communities can be romanticized but he spoke openly .

Br. Ignacio is my uncle and I am so thankful that you took the time to visit with him! My uncle and St. Anselm's are two things that I hope the world can get to know just a little bit more. They both hold such a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for this series!

When you see your uncle, please tell him how much I enjoyed his tour and his detailed explanation of the monastic life and of the chapel in particular. I was a postulant there about 50 years ago but felt it was not for me. I think I would have liked to have known him. I knew most of the older monks who are still alive there. Bless you and Happy New Year. J

Monks are some of my favorite people. I have to say watching this video was a bit like getting a tour from Telly Savalas the monk. He was the perfect choice for explaining the community

Many times we listen to videos of theologians or philosophers trying to figure out the mysteries of God. But rarely we find simple people, like brother Ignacio, that exudes humility and with a simple spirit that doesn't try to understand the unreachable wholeness of God, but because of his humility and obedience, he receives the graces that God gives to the ones He choses to be light in the darkness of this world. It brings to my mind: Matthew 18:3-5 and Matthew 11:25.

In my church (Episcopal) as Lent begins the children write Alleluia on paper strips and bury them in the ground outside the church. At Easter the children "dig up" the Alleluias and place them in an Easter basket which is carried into the church and placed at the altar - with hymns of course. So the children "Bury the Alleluias" and they "arise" on Easter morning.

I really like his comment that his life is soaked with scripture. As a regular catholic I feel this but with far less soaking. What I mean is if you say the office of the hours, plus mass with its seasons one does feel overloaded… and then you carry the Body of Christ with you with fellow Catholics.

Orthodox don't say the "O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of truth," prayer between Pascha and Pentecost, because we're waiting for the Holy Spirit to come. It reminds me a bit of his not saying Alleluia. We also don't kneel or prostrate to the floor during the same time.

Nice video, but isn’t it time for the real deal? Ask one of your Orthodox guests to get you access to Mount Athos, I am sure Father Heers or Trenham can arrange something you. Alternatively a US Orthodox monastery at least they keep the rules of Saint Basil.

@@xpictos777 Yes my ex's uncle was a deacon (?) in the Belarusian Orthodox Church. He spent 40 days on Athos. He told us a funny story about how the monks were late to prayer on evening because they were watching the world cup. The Igumen (or abbot) threatened to get rid of the TV but relented. I thought they did not have any power on the peninsula but he said they had power for years in the infirmary where the old monks are cared for. And that next to the infirmary, there was a little tea room that had a TV in it, and the monks would often gather inside when their duties and prayers were over.
