The King’s Life Guard
The King’s Life Guard is conducted by soldiers of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at Horse Guards. Horse Guards is named after the troops who have mounted The King’s Life Guard here since the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660.
The ceremony has remained mostly unchanged for over 350 years.
The ceremony of changing of the King’s Life Guard starts at 11am with the Old Guard formed up on Horse Guards Parade. As the New Guard arrives, a trumpeter sounds a royal salute and the officer salutes. The New Guard forms up facing the old one.
Once both lines are still, the corporal major, senior non-commissioned officer and sentries of the New Guard (the first relief) rein back their horses and leave for the guard room to take over their duties, which lasts for 48 hours. The sentries from the Old Guard return to the parade ground and the entire Old Guard returns back to barracks.
When the monarch is in London, there is a ‘long guard’ consisting of an officer, corporal major (who carries the regimental standard), two non commissioned officers, a trumpeter and 10 troopers. When the monarch is away, the guard is reduced to two non-commissioned officers and 10 troopers known as a ‘short guard’.
Whatever the season or weather, members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment ride down from Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge to take over guard duties.
TIMINGS OF DUTIES
The Guard Change currently takes place on: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am.
The two iconic soldiers on horses that mount duty on Whitehall at the entrance of Horse Guards change on the hour every hour from 10am until 4pm.
6:27 The famous Changing of the Guard at 11am.
16:46 The Blues and Royals are going join the Life Guards at Horse Guards Parade Ceremony.
17:58 The Blues and Royals are leaving the Horse Guards Parade for Hyde Park Barracks to rest for a few days.
18:47 The Cavalry is arriving at Horse Guards for the small Ceremony in the Courtyard.
22:36 Difficult. The gateman checks the horsemen. Look, he can't go through without physical contact with the tourists. Tourist comment: They asked me to "Get out of the way like a child."
36:03 Several more cavalrymen are leaving the Horse Guards with the trumpeter. There are actually three cavalrymen including the trumpeter.
37:27 The gatesman checks on the horsemen. He does it usually every 15 minutes.
41:01 "Get out of the Arches!" The King's Guard stamps his feet as he notices the tourist entering the restricted area.
49:34 The famous Changing of the Guard at 12pm. They change the horses and guards at the Horse Guards main entrance every hour from 10 am to 4 pm. Everyday four o'clock there's a small Ceremony in the Courtyard called INSPECTION. - Once satisfied, the officer dismisses the troopers, ending the Mounted Guard's duties for the day. Informally known as the Punishment Parade, the tradition of the 4 o'clock inspection began in 1894.
52:03 Why does the King's Guard slap the horse?
The purpose of guards slapping their horses when dismounting is to ensure the horse is prepared for the change in weight distribution as the guard descends from the horse.
The first one on the neck is essential to tell the horse, "good job." The second slap is to inform the horse that there is an excessive displacement of weight on one side at dismount.
54:22 The soldier checks the horses to make sure everything is safe.
1:02:59 Three police horses are walking down Whitehall towards Trafalgar Square, but they usually turn right before they get there.
1:04:51 The majestic King's Guard, "The Gateman," is checking the horsemen. Note: They are real soldiers from the British Army. I believe they are chosen to participate in this British tradition.
1:07:50 Scenes from the Houses of Parliament to Horse Guards as I was walking this morning.

**UPDATES** from the Incident on **April 25, 2024**, Where Two Household Cavalry horses that broke free and ran through the streets of London on Wednesday are in “serious condition,” Lt Col Mathew Woodward, commanding officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, said: "All five of the horses injured during the incident on 24 April are recovering with remarkable speed and it is very likely that Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish will participate in the King's Birthday Parade later this month. "The remaining two, Vida and Quaker, are enjoying a summer holiday in the Chilterns thanks to the Horse Trust. "They are expected to make a full recovery and we look forward to seeing them back on duty in due course." The Life Guards of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment were on their daily morning exercise ride in Belgravia when their horses were spooked by construction rubble being dropped through a plastic tunnel from height. Footage of Trojan and Vida running loose through the streets of London covered in blood was broadcast worldwide. If you wish to watch the video of the incident where the horse threw the King's Guard to the ground at Horse Guards Parade on 25th Abril 2024, here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lkULb3-R-MQ.htmlsi=reknOLvKHK-j6kv1

Thank you so much for the update, we have been all waiting to hear some updates on their health, and by the looks of it, it's all good news😀 I was writing yesterday in a comment on Buska's channel that i never imagined Vida and Quaker ever being on duty again, since they looked very bad at the end of that rampage through the streets. I thought they would be retired from the military permanently. There's actually a super nice short clip on the Instagram page of the British Army (the name of the account is British Army) where they posted footage with all 5 of them at the Horse Trust after their remarkable and amazing recovery. What it is even better is that they actually mentioned which one is which, for the people that don't follow Horse Guards channels regularly. Thank you for the reminder of the second unfortunate event that occurred that day (it was actually 25th of April, not May), i had almost forgotten about it🥴🥴🥴

Thank you for the video and welcome back! I was amazed at the gateman, having to weasel through a ton of tourists and horse poo on the pavement, and not say one word. What a true gentleman! I noticed that the Life Guards are more inclined to not shout at tourists (unless it's a really really serious situation) to make way, and prefer the more "gentlemanly" way, compared to the Blues, who use that command on a very regular basis for a lot less than what this situation was. They seem to use the "soldier" approach more. At this type of a situation, at least 80% of the Blues would have definitely shouted (not to mention the Blues have the loudest shouter- trooper in both regiments😅😅; i nicknamed him "Screaming Chief" because his voice is like a megaphone, he could scare to death any 300 tourists around him and raise the dead🤣🤣)

WHO ARE THE KING'S GUARD? Formed in 1969, the regiment emerged from the merger of the Royal Horse Guards ("the Blues") and the Royal Dragoons ("the Royals"), units with roots in the mid-17th century. Serving globally, it had roles in Northern Ireland, the Cold War in West Germany, the Falklands War, UN missions in Bosnia, and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was part of key defense strategies and reconnaissance missions. Notably, Prince William and Prince Harry joined as cornets in 2006. HOW LONG DO THE ROYAL GUARDS AND ROYAL HORSES WORK? After the officer checks them at 4:00 p.m., everyone, whether they're on horseback or not, will be done for the day. Two guards on horses watch the entrance to Horse Guards on Whitehall from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. They switch out every hour. WHY THEY SLAP THE HORSE? The purpose of guards slapping their horses when dismounting is to ensure the horse is prepared for the change in weight distribution as the guard descends from the horse. The first one on the neck is essential to tell the horse, "good job." The second slap is to inform the horse that there is an excessive displacement of weight on one side at dismount. HORSES ON HOLIDAY IN THE UK Following the conclusion of the Summer Ceremonial Season, these diligent military horses are respectfully sent to the LEICESTERSHIRE countryside for a well-deserved period of rest and recuperation. One may observe them taking a break on the beaches of Holkham in Norfolk, where they are free to enjoy themselves. During their six-week vacation, the horses are free to roam the verdant fields, inhale the invigorating country air, and revel in the delight of mud baths. At the break of dawn, they are escorted to the square at Hyde Park Barracks, where horse-drawn carriages await to transport them beyond the city limits. Their meticulously trimmed coats are allowed to grow naturally, and their metal shoes are removed. It is a joyous occasion for these majestic creatures! www.army.mod.uk/news-and-events/news/2023/08/military-working-horses-set-free-for-holiday-frolics/ ❤️ Please LIKE 👍 this video to help my channel grow. ❤️ Subscribe & click the bell (🔔) to receive notifications whenever I upload a new video; you'll be the first to know. ❤️Become a Channel Member💂JOIN HERE: / ru-vid.com/show-UCzs3UW3PEzYv66Yy9nD7D8gjoin Your contribution supports my Channel to create daily videos for you ❤️ Wishing you an amazing day ahead!
