@giuseppelogiurato5718

This would have been funnier without the pronunciation guides... At first I was like, "wow, these folks are doing pretty well!", but than I realized they had guides. Irish and other Celtic languages like Gaelic and Welsh are easier to butcher than French... (I play the Scottish bagpipes, and I've heard plenty of Gaelic words mispronounced; often quite amusingly... For an English speaker, a phrase like "crunluath fosgailte" or "toghail nam bo" can be a real minefield!)

@cigh7445
@cigh7445 4 года назад
It would help if the Irish guy reading the examples was actually pronouncing the words right. Spéir is not pronounced like English 'Spare'. The r is beside an i, and any consonant beside an i or e is pronounced SLENDER. The Irish broad and slender r is not supposed to be simply replaced by the 'English r'. Also amach is not amock, if it was then it would be spelt 'amac or amoc', the h marks LENITION which in the case of C is the gutteral 'ch' sound, similar to how a Scottish person would pronounce the ch at the end of 'Loch'. This is not me being a purist, these are literally the very BASIC rules of the Irish phonetic system which is not supposed to be the same as the English one.

SallyJulia Well it depends what you mean by "use" for example I would only very rarely have full conversations in Irish, but I and loads of my friends on campus would use odd sentences like offering things, making suggestions, asking and giving the time, mentioning random thoughts. Commenting on how attractive foreign lads are...

Well, Tolkien based one of his elvish languages on Welsh. Maybe they're from the same language family?

They are related but Welsh is what's called a " Brythonic" language and is closer to Cornish and Breton; it's the modern form of the language the ancient Britons and maybe the Gauls would have spoken.Irish is a Gaelic language and Scots Gaelic is a direct relation to it as it was brought over by the Irish invaders who invaded Pictish lands after the Fall of Rome.
