Towing Nightmare: Massive Tyre Blowout While Towing An RV

This week tests us in more ways than one! We have a massive tyre blowout while towing on the Stuart Highway at 90km per hour and incredibly manage to get off the road safely before some much needed help arrives! Once our heart rates settle down, we make a plan to unhitch the van and change the tyre on the side of the highway. What a feat in less than ideal conditions... heat, thousands of flies and a sloping run off, made jacking up the 79 an effort in itself!
We limp into Marla and sort a spare tyre from the local repairer, and enjoy an impromptu overnighter at the Marla Travellers Rest Roadhouse, before hitting the road again early the next morning. But our vehicle troubles didn't stop with the flat, as we experience uncontrollable shaking through the steering at speeds over 70km per hour, so it's back to Marla to try and figure out what on earth is going on with the 79! Despite all the challenges this week we are reminded of the incredible generosity of others, and are so grateful for the help we received in such trying circumstances.
Plus we are excited to be supporting the brilliant work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service through a new partnership that will have you feeling good in more ways than one! We've teamed up with Tim Adams Wines and Mr. Mick to donate $20 per dozen wines purchased using our FEELGOOD 15% discount code, to our favourite charity, the RFDS. Believe it or not had the exact blowout on the way to Broken Hill with Mickey Thompson towing a 20’ dual axle caravan. No warning running tyre monitors - it was very scary but the 79 was able safety move off the road with any further damage accept bent wheel arch. Stay safe

My heart goes out to you guys. Stuff can go wrong but thankfully you are all OK. We lost our van in Tassie in Feb this year due to a catastrophic gas explosion. It was terrifying but thankfully we both survived. We have since bought another van and have booked our return trip to Tassie from the Sunny Coast in Feb of 2025. Getting 'back on the horse' so to speak. We met you all in May 2023 at Coonabarabran Golf Club and have followed your journey ever since. Hope to catch you on the road again sometime. Our love and prayers for safe travels are with you all.

Was a pretty frightening moment especially for J but as always very positive outcome and plenty of help too!! I think the rim is ok 👍 I’m going to do a thorough check over the whole vehicle with Bodie McCormack (our legend mechanic) when we get to QLD and really look at what could be improved from a safety point of view also 🙌🍻

You will probably get a kazillion recommendations on tyre brands, including this one from me. Our Toyo AT2s, now superseded by their AT3s, have taken us from Perth to QLD towing our BT for several years in a row without any hint of an issue. Glad you are all safe. Cheers. Late edit: I see your spare is a Toyo. 😊

Good to see you survived your blowout it can be very scary, I remember as a kid travelling with my mum and dad in the late 60's in dad's EH wagon towing a trailer on the Marlborough stretch just north of Rockhampton and seeing the trailer tyre pass us and head off on it's own through the bush. That was an experience I will never forget as a young kid.

Well done Paul, it sure is scary when you have a blowout especially towing. Do you have a tyre pressure monitoring system? Might have given you some warning. Just a tip when putting your spare back on take your shovel off the roof and use it as a leaver to lift your spare onto your wheel studs, takes all the stress and effort out of it. Great videos. Cheers Graham
@TheFeelGoodFamily
@TheFeelGoodFamily 2 месяца назад
Thank you Graham a great tip on the shovel!! Yes, we have a TPMS and it did alarm but only as the tyre failed…. Was pretty instant and kind of added to Jaspers distress at the time but definitely worked as it should which is a positive 😳 feel very fortunate 😅👍

Glad you were able to get fixes, rest and recover in Marla after that rather traumatic incident. It's a testament to the inherent stability of your 79 and Zone (and of course skilful driving!), that you were able to bring it to a safe stop. And the Marla Roadhouse and campground is a bit of a gem after 10 days on the Oodnadatta Track!

We are Variety supporters and Flying Doctors too. We have been lucky to participate in 4wd events and the Bash with Variety QLD. The money raised by the participants for these charities is amazing. If you get an opportunity to participate please do. The people you meet with the same mindset become family. We enjoy the stretch from Marla to Erldunda. Kulgera especially for a stop.

I feel for you . We had a blow out once with three kids in the back going around an elevated curve with a sheer drop off to the side. Trying to change the tyre with semi trailers coming around a blind bend behind me was terrifying. Today’s tyres are getting bigger and heavier to the point they look impossible to take off the high mount on the back of a van and remount the flat one afterwards. I seriously am worried that without help I could not do it.

Hi Ross, that sounds a very frightening experience for you and your family!! You are right these days they can weigh in excess of 40kg and having the extra hands to help like we did in this case was such a relief! The other issue we had was the shoulder of the road fell away so I needed 2 jacks to get enough height to lift the vehicle which fortunately we had 😅 I think having a good road side assistance cover is super important and generally the good samaritan will show up 🙌🇦🇺💙

Hey guys - you’re safe that’s the only thing that matters! Do you have pressure and temp monitor on your dash for all tires? Just one of those things!
@anitaneat1010
@anitaneat1010 2 месяца назад
Hi guys, These things happen unfortunately as you know from your first season blowout. Both times you've had someone else do the tyre for you and please don't take this as a criticism but what would you have done if you hadn't had a travelling partner or a good Samaritan stop to help? I ask this because there may have been an opportunity to cover a worst case scenario "what do we do now?" Section. It can be so very beneficial to inform others I guess on the situation like that you've experienced. The wonderful thing about the travelling community is how helpful others can be, but there are always those moments on isolated roads where maybe there's no help available for a blown out tyre so just thought it would have been good to hear you troubleshoot the situation. I am lucky enough to be married to a bushman who can troubleshoot most things and we've got a couple of handy lads and we never travel completely alone either because of these things happening, but if you can perhaps add some tips on what you could have done if you hadn't had help from a travelling partner it may be really helpful for people who end up in that same situation. Still really enjoying your content though guys 😊
@TheFeelGoodFamily
@TheFeelGoodFamily 2 месяца назад
Thank you and a really great suggestion on adding in that section 🙏 another idea to add in also is to have good roadside assist 👍 we just met some people that needed remote help and that got them sorted also 🙌🇦🇺💙
