Oh that is a beautiful truck. Mine is a 94 with a 5.0 and I love these body styles. Most of the leaves have falling here. That's close to my mileage. I think mine is 270K. I do like having two gas tanks. That rides pretty good. Yes I really like Ford trucks. I don't know why, but I seem to lose power at times going up hills. I cleaned the throttle body. I hear ya I don't get good gas mileage either. She definitely rides pretty good. My best friend sold me my truck for a good price and he put 13K on it before he passed away from pancreatic cancer. He wanted me to have it so I call it Preston cause that was his last name. Great video Brian.

Thanks Bill. I got ol Gertrude back in 2008. She had 97,800 miles. I think the reason you lose power is because of the 5.0 liter. Do you turn off your OD? If not, try that. I l'm considering purchasing a newer truck but haven't made up my mind as of yet.

@@BigSouthOutdoorsTV Your welcome Brian. Wow 2008 and it runs like a champ. Ok I will try that hopefully that will work. Yea I was thinking of getting a new truck also, but still keep the 94.

If you’re losing power up hills, check your fuel pressure regulator, also if it happens more frequently at highway speeds you may want to consider a digital ignition module, the 5.0 and 5.8 Windsor motors have a known issue where the distributor cannot produce adequate spark at highway speed causing power loss

Thank you for watching. Although we retired her, we still have 'ol Gertrude. We are in the process of doing some cosmetic work on her and then we're gonna get her cleaned up and my son, Nate is going to be slipping into the saddle. Check out my video She's retired and Nates Ride. We're going to be doing a father/son series on cleaning/restoring it. I think you'll enjoy them. If you haven't already, I invite you to subscribe and be a part of the Big South family.

Hey Man, great video! Im glad I stumbled across this video because I just recently picked up a '94 F-150 with the 4.9L, 5-speed, and I was curious about how much I'd be able to tow with it, etc. Mine is also a short wheel base. I wanted to ask you about your rear shocks, and if you could share exactly what brand/model they are. Also, are you running a trailer brake by chance? Thanks!

Thanks for stopping in. The shocks are moroso, 1,000 lb each. I did install a break controller when I bought this trailer. In all honesty, there was already one on it, but it didn't work.

Nice truck, has plenty of power. I have a 1996 F350 4x4 dump truck with 4:10 rears. It has the 7.3 power stroke and e40d trans. I have approx. 47,000 original miles. I rarely get going faster than 50 when I drive it although it will go faster. Can’t beat these old trucks. They are like tanks.

Thanks for watching. I found ol' Gertrude on craigslist after wrecking my '92 ranger and she's been a great investment. If it can get traction, I believe it'd pull the gates if hell off its hinges. I bought a newer truck, a 2014 F150 xlt. I passed her on to my son Nate.

Tow / haul mode is different than od off. Od off was in the 4 speeds whereas tow / haul is in the new 6 speed double overdrive and 10 speed triple overdrive autos. Tow / haul mode still allows the trans to shift into overdrive gears when cruising along at high speeds, but it automatically holds out the revs further while accelerating through each gear and keeps the torque converter locked up to prevent excessive wear. It also automatically downshifts when going down a hill and/or braking to save the brakes
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV 5 месяцев назад
I think you missed my point. There IS NO tow/haul mode in trucks this age. Turning OFF the OD was the "tow/haul" mode of that time i.e, that's all there was. People don't like to get buried in tech gargin they don't understand anyway and I've learned that simplicity in this kind of stuff is best.

Stroked from 351ci to 357ci? Did you mean it was bored over .030 inch lol?
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV Год назад
Bored/stroked....I have no clue. Interesting question though. I'm just relaying the info I got from Ford when I was doing research to make this video. According to them, the gentleman that ordered it from the dealer requested a small block "truck" engine. He bought that truck, short wheelbase and all to pull a 32' cabin cruiser. They said according to the VIN code, the engine is 357 ci but classified as a 5.8 liter. It's the OG engine and it's never been out of the truck so, in all honesty, I have NO CLUE what's in it or how It's built. I just know that getting traction, it would pull the gates of hell off their hinges. 🤣

A couple misconceptions here. The engine is bored to 357, not stroked. The OD solenoid is the same solenoid that controls the other 3 speeds. Solenoid a and b alternate being on or off to change gear ratio. The solenoid pack can be changed while doing a fluid and filter service. Super easy. Other than those two things I love it. The 361w I built for my half ton, which ended up in my 350 CCLB dually, is an animal for a small block. It does not overly struggle to pull 10k+ behind me at 70-75 in OD. I’ve also pulled up to 24k gross behind me without a problem at 60 or so. Also, for your speedo, you need to replace the PSOM, or have it repaired. It doing that can and will kill the E4 trans. I don’t know how it’s not shifting erratically, but the PSOM is the issue for the whacky speedo. Or metal in the rear end. Great video, and I love my OBS fords

@BigSouthOutdoorsTV Год назад
Thanks for watching. Bored, stroked, I don't know. I just know what the sticker under the hood has printed on it. I do know it's a 4.00 inch bore due to some work I had done to the engine. They confirmed it was a 4.00 inch bore. This truck has the E40d transmission. From what I understand it's a 4 speed with a lock up clutch, not a 3 speed. It contains the same planetary gear set as the 3 speed C6 but is considered a 4 speed with the lock up clutch. I don't know if you're a subscriber but if you aren't, I would like to invite you to join the Big South family. Thanks again for watching.

I have an obs f150 with a 5.8 and an e40d. Personally it depends on what I tow, if it seems it constantly wants to downshift I’ll lock out the od but if it seems happy in od especially on flat ground I’ll leave it in for the extra mpgs lol. I do have 3.55ls rear end.
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV Год назад
@@ethanhenneberry2625 Gertrude has a 3.08 gear ratio. That is a high gear for towing but the man that ordered her new requested that gear. My new truck, Clifford has a 3.73 and I can tell a HUGE difference while pulling the same load. It's relaxed in 6th gesr and doesn't downshift unless I go up a significant grade. It also gets far better mph that Gertrude. Thanks for watching.

Your weight is off I have a 96 just like and it weighs 4540 me inside with a half a tank of gas and if you're not taking the overdrive off you won't have a transmission very long pulling that trailer
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV Год назад
Mike, I beg to differ. I've had this truck weighed. Half a tank of gas, it weighed in at 5,946 lbs. It was ordered by the gentleman that owns Cumulus broadcasting company. He ordered it "beefed up"...ie built heavier to pull his 32' cabin cruiser. He couldn't get an F250 in that short a wheel base so he ordered this truck with the intent of it be easier to maneuver in small marinas. Not exactly sure where the extra weight comes from but YES, it does weigh that much. With all due respect, do you think I would just throw a number out there without having done my due diligence? I'm not that stupid. I also absolutely do turn off the OD when towing. It's been a while but I believe I said that in the video.

This WAS indeed the last year the F150 was made in THIS square body style with the 5.8L Windsor family internal, push rod style engine backed by the E4OD transmission. The F250 truck series continued that engine and transmission configuration until 1999. Everything changed in 2000. Thanks for watching.

I've got a 95 f150 xlt 4x4 with 5.8 with auto trans but I've been looking for an answer to one question which i cant find anywhere can i tow a dual axle car hauling trailer with car on it or dual axle camper and not break something?
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV
@BigSouthOutdoorsTV 11 месяцев назад
Yes, you can. My equipment trailer is 2,200lbs empty. Fully loaded, it jumps to just over 5,000lbs. It's not going to get mpg worth speaking of, but it will pull it. The rear end gearing has a lot to do with it. Ol' Gertrude has a 3.08. With the oversized tires It's closer to a 2.73. Remember to turn the OD off when towing, that helps too.
