The Ford 300 cubic inch straight six is long believed to be one of the most durable engines ever made. But is it really? In this video we push the limits on our 1991 Ford F-150 to see just how reliable the F-150 is. Can it survive a day of rigorous work on the farm or is the $900 Ford going to end in disaster? And just for kicks, we brought along a 1994 Dodge Ram cummins for a quick tug of war!

During "cash-for-clunkers", dealers were supposed to drain the oil and kill the engine of any vehicle they took on a trade. Many old 300s were traded in under the hood of various cars. A lot of dealers were having difficulty killing them. Simply draining the oil wasn't enough. Some were pouring sand and rocks into the crank but the 300s just kept going. I know several dealers that just stopped trying. In my opinion, the 300 is in the top 3 engines that Ford has ever made.

I worked for a Toyota dealer at the time of the cash for clunkers. The way you were supposed to do it was to drain the oil and put in a solution that was basically liquid glass. Most engines wouldn’t make it very long at idle before locking up solid. We took in a 300, had to put a brick on the pedal and it ran for the most part of an hour, stalled, restarted and ran for a while longer and repeat a couple of times. I think it finally just lost compression, never actually seized.

@N. Sidor , I've owned my truck for over 35 years and it has had to work hard the whole time I've owned it. I use it every day to pull a 16 foot trailer loaded with lawn equipment. I've moved two trailer houses with it, one a 60 footer. It has also towed a lot of Ford's that were unable to make it under their own power. I also use it to haul firewood in the winter. My truck is 60 years old and has well over a million miles on it. I have not yet seen a Ford to match that. I'm glad that you are happy with your Ford, and I hope it continues to give you good service, but let's see if it is still going when it's 60 years old.

The real beauty of the 300 Ford was that it would run even if 2 or more plugs were fouled and the oil was neglected. Drove one in HS and never put any money in it other than gas. A buddy owned a junk yard and we were Chevy guys but ford was just that cheap. Kept it until a rusted 69 Dart came along that we rebuilt with bondo and newspaper. We were Road Kill life 35 years ago.

I've owned several Fords over the years with that engine and it truly does deserve it's reputation for toughness. Back the 70s when the Big three American auto companies all offered a pickup with a big inline six,it really didn't matter which brand you chose because all of the six cylinder trucks were durable as hell and lasted a long time.
@gjlannet
@gjlannet 3 года назад
I once heard about a logger in my area who had an old Ford with the 300 6 cylinder. The truck had cooling issues that he decided not to fix so he would run it all day in the woods until the engine would seize then leave it. The next day he would fire it back up and do it again. Went at least a year like that. I believe the engine did eventually give up but I guess it’s understandable when it was heat seized on a daily basis for a year.

You have to have these in a manual 4x4 and its capable. I have a 2002 7.3 with the 6spd manual and 4x4... Its basically a tractor; and its awesome.

I'd say a manual is minimal. I've got a 96 300 5 speed 2wd, and I work it fairly hard for being my daily driver. Think my heaviest load that was actually measured so far was around 22** lbs of scrap steel to the dump, and it wasn't working too hard, just maybe a little harder to stop without trailer breaks 😅😅😅

@@dustinhaynes2617 I have a 95 300 straight 6 with a 5sp 4x4 and the heaviest I've hauled was about 65xx so far. My buddy's 2003 mustang gt broke down so I had to haul that with a full size trailer and my truck didn't care the entire time.

I’m subscribed to all of the TFL channels. Keep up the amazing content! It’s refreshing to see people be non biased, professional and intellectual but yet can still enjoy acting like big kids once in a while. Thank you guys! Much love from Grand Junction! PS I drive a 1997 F350 XLT 4x4 with the 7.3 and ZF 5 tranny that has nearly 323,000 miles on it so if you all ever need another video about good old trucks I’m local!

So I’ve had a ford 300 six in my pickup since I bought it 8 years ago, it was my first truck back in high school, it took a ton of abuse, mudding all the time, burnouts, racing, all kinds of shenanigans. It’s got 368,000 km on the clock and still pushes 40 psi oil pressure running the highway. It was recently stolen and returned, overheated so bad it dumped two gallons of coolant. It still runs great after that. I am at this point convinced that the old 300 is indestructible and immortal and will never die 😝

I've a 78 Econoline, 300 six, three on the tree... over 375,000 miles, still runs great. I did replace the trans this year, been though 3 clutches, 5 batteries, one water pump and 2 alternators, 3 solenoids, one regulator and one ignition module. I inherited it in '91, my Uncle bought it new, only put 5600 miles on it before he parked it because his vision went from a lifetime of smoking Kents. It sat for 8 years before i took it it on. Amazingly enough, it started, old battery, gas and all. I drove it about 40 miles to where I lived. I took the carb out, it was full of disgusting gleeb. I have no idea how I drove those 40 miles. This van has served me so well. I was even gainfully homeless, lived in it after a bunch of carpentry to make it home, for 2 years. Parts are available, and cheap. New muffler, $28. For my Subaru, $150... same store. It is so easy to work on. It loves nothing more than to cruise down the interstate...
