Town riding demo 2023
Some motorcycle riding tips from a fully qualified advanced motorcycle instructor.
On the way to the test centre this morning I decided to show my trainee my thought process whilst riding. Let me know if you have any questions. Russ
To learn more about cornering on a motorcycle, consider taking an advanced motorcycle training course.
If you appreciate my uploads and feel they help you, feel free to buy me a cuppa. Thanks. ☺

I love your vids but all I keep thinking is god I miss riding :( It was my happy place. I Had 2 accidents whilst riding, 1st (2008) I was on the M4 motorway following a BMW for 2 miles at a safe distance waiting to overtake as the driver was doing 60 in lane 3 with no other cars around. The driver then emergency stopped for no reason. I hit the rear and watched him gun it away as I bounced off his boot and was airborn. I was wearing a Caberg flip front helmet that hit the ground on the chin section and the front opened and bent to the right taking my jaw with it. I got 5 metal plates, 11 screws, and a new jawline, and a happy dentist. The BMW driver drove off and fled the scene and was never caught. After 6 years(2014) I started riding again and did a refresher course and was loving life till 2nd RTA 2nd was a guy pulling out of a bus stop like an idiot, trying to spin a 180 at speed as I was passing the rear of his offroad landrover in position 3 at 35-40 mph while his left indicator on. The guy was a bus driver for a living so should have known better than pulling in it in the 1st place and how to use his mirrors. I hit just behind his front wheel and as I went over the bonnet his A pillar oblitorated my left arm. He got 2 points and £60 fine and I got 13 metal plates, 30 screws, 41 stitches, knackered knees and disabled for life. Only thing I ride now is a mobility scooter! Go carefully out there folks as people just don't seem to look or worry about the effect their crap standards of driving will have on others.

There are vehicles or not, changing lane, I always indicate because personally it makes me feel safer and also it gets you in the habit of using the indicators 👍 Sadly many people take indicators for granted and nowadays I see so many drivers and riders not using indicators at all! 👍
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham Год назад
Yes, as long as the indicator isn't misunderstood for a junction nearby or left on which is the most common cause of test fails.
@JRYDER13
@JRYDER13 Год назад
@@RoadcraftNottingham That is correct 👍 also, not just indicating but riding safe and using common sense will take you a long way, that is my view 😊
@thebrowns5337
@thebrowns5337 7 месяцев назад
@@JRYDER13 I think the same way as you - usually best to indicate even with apparently no other vehicles nearby. As you say it's habit. As for near junctions I decide on the specifics - if I want/need to move over a lane near a junction and it could confuse people I won't signal but if I am in no rush to change lane I will wait until after the junction and then signal. Always think it's best not to change lanes near junctions anyway - if someone is joining say a dual carriageway and you are in lane 2 they might merge into lane 1 as you approach - you don't want to be changing lanes as they do.

For one because of your ease of riding but as well because I can learn about what is important for motorcycles so I can take them more into account when I meet them on the road. Don't miss city riding (Suffolk doesn't have a city the larges town is Ipswich which isn't too bad) and the road surface in Gedling and Carlton are particularly bad, it starts as you approach Gunthorpe Bridge coming in from Bingham. I liked to see the detour route for getting around the construction work at Broadmarsh.

after watching many of your videos, which are always informative, i noticed your preference for sports touring motorcycles, which if you believe the reports is now a dead market, (especially here in the USA where i now reside) just interested if this style of bike suits your riding style as opposed to the more popular ADV style motorbikes, but regardless good to see the ST1100 making an appearance again.

Congrats Gordon :) Nice planned ride, I usually plan to straight-line roundabouts like them towards the end if it's clear behind it's a safer option. The indicating to go straight ahead seems pointless and unnecessary (well in my mind it does) :D
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham Год назад
Yes I totally agree about indicating off smaller roundabouts . Indicating off larger roundabouts confirms to traffic at exit 3 who may give way that you're coming off because some do turn right without indicating and there are more roundabouts out there where you can turn right from the left lane now. Also pedestrians that may be there, following cars and the dvsa says "best practise" As long as people aren't misled I don't see any problem. ☺

Another good video Quick question When there is likely to be a delay at traffic lights, do you pull up in neutral with back brake and left foot on gear lever ready to go into first gear when lights change ie right foot down . The advice when stationary seems to differ depending who you speak to. Contrary advice Is leave in first in case you need to get out of the way quickly if say someone might run into the back of you
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham Год назад
Hi, the "get out of the way quickly" answer, I personally think is rubbish. I've asked many many people to show me one video where someone is already stopped, sees a car about to rear end them then *successfully* escapes before being hit. Doesn't happen. Personally, it doesn't matter to me or examiners which foot is down as long as it doesn't affect the correct control of the bike. I do pop mine into neutral if the lights have only just changed and I know it's a long sequence. I'll do a detailed upload on this soon. Hope this helps.
@beverleynorth4914
@beverleynorth4914 Год назад
Thnx Seems more natural to me to put into neutral and then put left foot down, even if it means a bit of dancing about. Gives you the chance to blip brake light to warn any vehicles coming up behind. Weather grotty at moment but we’ll soon be back on the roads in the Peak District . All the best

Well done Gordon and thanks for the good video - A question at 10.55 in the video you are stopped on a red with nothing in the right hand lane. You are going straight on - as the right hand lane only has a direction arrow and no wording ( right turn or right turn only) could you use the right lane to go straight on - accepting the risk about joining the traffic that has queued for the straight on and the limited option for joining. I am sure somewhere I was told the arrows are advisory unless accompanied with written instructions ? Always safer to queue for the straight ahead - just interested if I'd dreamt that up ?
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham Год назад
You're absolutely right the arrows are really advisory. Problems being as you know, that lane ends for straight ahead so you'll effectively be "cutting someone up" in a way or at least be relying on them for part of your safety. Also, if an accident does follow, it'll be taken into consideration in the event of a claim or prosecution. I'd personally consider going if I was alone, no one else was in front of me in that lane and I could "gun it "
@yellownev
@yellownev Год назад
@@RoadcraftNottingham Thanks Russ, I ride a blood bike and sometimes risks accounted for this is an option.... rarely taken for the reasons you correctly cite above, I'm glad I recalled the comment given to me on a test ride one time. Congrats Gordon! Russ, question: if you position to the left rear of the vehicle in front, because you've seen people hit reverse when doing a U-turn... would you not be better positioned to the rear right, by default? Two reasons to my thinking: 1) A vehicle reversing to then do a U-turn on single carriageway, will tend to reverse to the left (so by being right, you're away from it) and 2) a driver looking to U-turn is likely looking down the oncoming lane (around the right A pillar), and therefore more likely to see your headlight in their right wing mirror. Conversely, with a student behind you, maybe that qualifies as a special exception to the normal, because you'd rather be reversed into than having a student offset to the left? Very nit picky, and arm-chair quarter-backing, I know.
@RoadcraftNottingham
@RoadcraftNottingham Год назад
That's a fair comment. I think it was just an on the spur of the moment comment. There's an upload where a van started rolling back and when I sounded my horn he soon stopped, hopefully because he just checked his mirrors but yes, in that situation I'd agree with you. Cheers. ☺
