Townsend, Tennessee is a great little town to visit with many things going on, including this "Old Timer's" Festival. Blue Grass music on stage and in every corner of the property of the welcome center.2014
Hi Wally, Seems a lot of people knew Paul or at least knew who he was. The day I recorded this I had no idea who he was I could tell it wasn't his time! He entertained a lot of people and people loved him, from all over the place. Please accept my condolences. A lot of folks are going to miss him too.
THIS is why I go on “vacation” in Appalachia. Everyone participates, even if you’re 300lbs with arthritis. Or feet tapping from a wheelchair. Pick up what little work I can find, car sleep, tent squat, dumpster dive, whatever!
So nice of you to let me watch the show especially western.seems Americans are ready to go back to lord and waiting patiently for his 2nd coming I too.pray more we all need it.
When I was 12, I was fortunate enough to go to summer camp in the Appalachian mountains and it was the best summer of my life, I have longed to go back ever since. I am now 59, guess it's time to return to the best place in the country where the people are real and the wilderness is still wild. I still sing those songs I learned so long ago when I'm cooking. Thank you for sharing this lovely video.
What a fabulous video can't get enough of watching it. The gentleman with the board was terrific and he wasn't even out of breath. The young man behind him was was amazing too. What a lovely town it must be to live in. Thank you all so very much for sharing your video with the world. More please I'm hooked. X. 😊😊😊😊🐱🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@kathyleicester7306 Madam I wish you well in your future struggles, my heart is with all true Americans. May I add never ever forget where you came from, they are the roots of your land. May you live long and well. SLAINTE
Gotta love East Tennessee! I’ll be driving out for our family’s annual Christmas in the Smoky’s next Saturday. I went to college at Carson Newman in Jefferson City and I love East Tennessee so much I go back twice a year! This here is real infectious and I love watching this
Six year old clip and I just seen it today, 07.22.2020 I gotta say it made me smile ear to ear! It was sweet and the Appalachia CLOGER tapped those feet like magic!
Soooo....before break dancers in the 80's were bringing out their cardboard to break dance on.....Paul had this sheet of wood he would carry around and do his thing!?!!!!! This is awesome...shout out from South Texas!!!!
It's heartwarming to see the small children in there and taking an interest. Ok,so they don't know what they're doing yet, but give them time and in a few years they'll be up there, flat footing with best of 'em. And so it continues...hopefully.
I’m out of breath from just watching!! Wow! So many excellent dancers. Crazy socks feet float. The 2 guys to the right of him were amazing. The little ones learning- so sweet. Loved this.
I have had the pleasure of attending two of these events in Townsend and enjoyed a surprising amount o fun both times. great, friendly people, good music and of course the clogging....
I love the country side culture of America their food their music the back roads the scenery greetings from the super ancient megalithic city of TIAHUANAKU BOLIVIA 🇧🇴.
The guy with the board is good but he is doing the cord version of the dance. Guy in blue who took off his shirt is really good. Doing the finger picking version of the dance. Wish I could do either.
These are my folk. We have lived in the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains for near damn 200 years. 80% of us are Scotch-Irish. The dance you see we call it clogging, it came from our Scotch-Irish ancestors, who mostly came over here during the Great Potato Famine. This is why our roots are a little different. More examples: Moonshine, Blue Grass, Accent, etc.
All of the dancers are great but the young man who took off his shirt should win the blue ribbon for sure. My Daddy, back in the l940's thru the l970's would get up when just the right music was on the radio and he'd start "The Old fashion Hoe Down" dancing. , very much like the young guy in this video. He used his arms, his entire body was into the found and he would stomp the floor so hard we were afraid he'd end up falling right threw the floor. I haven't seen anyone who could even compete with my dear old dad at the Hoe Down. I really enjoyed watching these guys... brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. I hope Dad is still dancing in Heaven.
Technically the old guy with his own board is doing traditional buck dancing. The others are clogging and flatfootin'. Most are doing just the basic step. It takes alot of energy. The steps and style of dance is to put the ficus and energy into the feet and legs while the arms are still and typically held close to the body, not flinging arms around. Dancing on a board or a low wooden platform comes straight from Irish & Scottish traditional dances. Scottish and Irish people who settled heavily through the Appalachian mountains retained their music and dances. And the style retained the traditional rhythm and original steps. The young dude couldn't last because he's moving his upper body too much ... so much he's wrecking his ability to keep the pace and balance and timing of the lower body. The steps naturally lent to minimal upper body movement. The fast taps and footwork and legwork takes so much energy, focus and precision that you need to keep your arms under control. And large upper body movement actually throws off the rythm, balance and timing the lower body. That's why he keeps losing his rythem and balance. Let the legs do the work. The arms only move slightly. Appalachian flatfootin', clogging, and buck dancing come from Irish and English dances were done on a flat board outside or on a wooden platform the constructed outside. Or inside on a wooden floor. And the point is to make the clapping/clogging sound with heel and toe taps just loud enough to hear them and still hear the music.
Kaleido Scope Awesome information. I'm from an Irish background and I LOVE this type of clog foot dancing. It literally brings tears to my eyes. So I will reread your info.
That is awesome. I lived Townsend, TN for a year and half and loved it there. Just a little too cold & snowy for me. I prefer sand and salt water, but enjoyed my time there for sure.
