A parents job is to protect their children from all forms of abuse, at school in the classroom, outside of school, online social media, chat rooms... yeah it's hard being a parent at times but being a child is also incredibly hard and we must not turn our backs on our children for a second as there is always someone somewhere willing to fill that void and they don't have your child's best wishes at heart. Thank you Dove.

We or you exploiting the weak audience? I want answer DOVE, not PHAT CHICK PROPAGANDA IN GAMES.. Results, less respect for big phat woman, why do they need to spoil my fun, or even interfere in my entertrainment.. Hi Ben. Our Dove Self-Esteem Project is designed for boys and girls. Research we conducted found that 80% of girls use retouching apps by the age of 13, and other research has shown that girls suffer disproportionately from low-self-esteem due to unrealistic beauty standards. Because of this, we chose to focus this campaign on girls, but the resources and tools are available to support all young people. 💖

@@doveunitedstates You’re doing a great job! There’s nothing wrong with focusing specifically on one gender or age group, particularly those of the highest risk. The research noted in the ad showed the particularly negative impact social media has had on young girls, and the short film addressed this accordingly. This doesn’t minimize the challenges young boys face, it was simply meant to speak to girls, and did so beautifully.

I pick out the insecurities. I pick out the things I don’t like. I pick out the things other people might not like. But, I’m finally coming to terms on how beautiful I am, and how much I nitpick myself. I’m a young teen, and know how much my mother loves me, and how much she supports me. "You wouldn't say that to your daughter." BULLSH**. I'd bet 9/10 moms do this regularly. A LOT of mothers have NO IDEA how toxic their daily language around their kids can be. *Every time* you comment on your body negatively, or say "I'm so bad" for eating a brownie, or express a desire to lose weight or look skinny, or classify foods as good and bad... it's there. It's all right there. You don't have to be verbally instructing for a child to understand the message. "I look fat." "I feel fat" "I can't eat that." "I shouldn't eat that." "That (food)'s not good for me." "I don't need those calories." "I can't eat for the rest of the week" or "I'm going to have to workout" after eating a big meal "I lost weight!" (and receives praise for doing so); "I gained weight" (and receives condolences for doing so). Always choosing the salad when you go out. Exercising excessively. Saving 'skinny-clothes' and hoping to fit in them eventually. Think about what you say and do. This is not a social media problem. It's a cultural problem.

Best solution of all: DON'T HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA!!! It does nothing but cause trouble.
@qt_stacy
@qt_stacy 2 года назад
cool so… no. nope. this is the opposite of a solution actually lmao. not only is it an unreasonable suggestion but it’s utterly oxymoronic in delivery. to advise others to eliminate their social media accounts from the social media account you created for RU-vid is “do as i say, not as i do.” considering this short film is designed specifically to open up the eyes of parents to teenagers and tweens in order to offer a lifeline for open, honest, respectful, and healthy dialogue that can be accessed by their children if they are struggling with their self image or for ent reason whatsoever. what your “solution” is actually implying to youths, especially those who may be developing or already have developed a dysmorphic view their own body, that it’s their fault they feel this way because they didn’t eliminate their social media. in layman’s terms, by suggesting to any individual living in today’s digital, modern society, that their only option for being at peace with their bodies is only possible after disconnecting from their digital social selves. i’m not even gonna exemplify income earned thru social media as someone’s full time job in this comment. but ill st least clarify that for those people having social media is a financial death sentence. so to anyone reading the original comment of this thread comment, i hope you’ll also see my response because this is so far from a “solution,” it’s instead its own problem and an example of toxic influence online. this comment comes full circle trying to offer a solution to a problem that she exemplifies. She/he invalidates anyone feeling not pretty enough, not strong enough, or just not enough period after scrolling thru their personalized feeds on their social medias. the influence of digital life is undeniably real & inescapably necessary. so in order to prevent this potentially irreversible destruction that those consuming content and being blindly manipulated and influenced by those beyond their screen require open and honest dialogue between everyone but especially between parents and their children. instead of allowing the minds of society’s youth to be taken advantage of by those who are trying to convince them to seek to achieve whatever unrealistic idea of perfection personified thru spending money until they hate themselves or they’ve done something permanent they regret. we the adults, must communicate that its a constant struggle for everyone when pondering their identity, self image, self esteem, and it always will be. that level of self awareness is very very hard to understand and id argue that most people never will be able to introspect in a way that allows them to stop selfishly seeking perfection but to instead prioritize selfless acts of compassion and respect especially if you have neighbors (on a macro level) who are less fortunate than you and you have the time to donate. the constant innerpersonal struggle of humanity is real, exacerbated by digital existence and only changes within society as a whole thru teaching our youth the need to always consume content skepticizing its intent and critically thinking about what is gained by the few if the many hate themselves. frankly not even all content is consumed intentionally… so arming the youth with the critical thought necessary to safely traverse digital media to avoid being directly manipulated and taken advantage or directly targeted and bullied for things beyond their control (skin color or sexual reproductive organs) provides invaluable tools from which are beneficial to everyone and promotes a safety net for the child thru the parents cultivation of the child’s trust and intelligence regarding their ability to ASK FOR HELP (the most difficult thing to do for many [i can only speak from my direct experience as a citizen in a developed nation]) if they become confused by something they’ve seen online.

Education & love is the key to counteracting the toxic social media available to anyone. Legislation is bureaucratic, a lengthy process, and sometimes fruitless. An example of this is gun control. Parents, love your kids and have open conversations about self love, acceptance and help build your own confidence as well as that of your children. Everyone can be affected by the unrealistic and hurtful social media as well as get inspired by those who have positive messages. We make choices based on what we know and what we accept so let’s all focus on education and open conversation. It starts at HOME not in the policies being fought over for power and money. These commercials are a good start to get conversations about self esteem and acceptance. Keep up the good work, Dove! ❤🕊️

Dove, this was beautiful. The sad thing is yes influencers have this at the tip of their fingers but it’s also everywhere else. For the parents concerned, please keep an open door with your kids. I understand life (like working and having multiple children) can distract us from having personal convos with your children, but please don’t let yourself close the door. The other day I saw a filter on social media that shows half your face all edited and dolled up and the other half your natural self. I pointed it out to one of my brothers, “this is the easiest way to explain to you pretty much what magazines and different ads do. They edit the people in the photos so much that of course you’re not gonna ever accomplish looking like them.” He was dumbfounded. He knew about photo editing but he didn’t know to what degree.

@Dove US Thank you for doing this. I'm a 31 year old woman w/no kids yet. But I can sense the maternal instinct inside me. I'm a survivor of 2 different eating disorders. Along w/ any eating disorder very often comes "body dysmorphic disorder". As a former young girl & teenager, I can say that prevention is very very important. And by doing things like you're doing w/these vids and movement, you're helping girls & women of all ages. I especially believe that when it comes to healthy body image & body acceptance, this can start as soon as the human brain begins remembering things. Or, a negative pattern can start at the same time. We are born into a world where something is always better. Girls need to know from as young an age as possible, that just like God numbered the stars in the sky, He also numbered the pores on our faces. He numbered the hairs on our heads. Body positivity is crucial. Prettier & smarter isn't better. But what defines prettier & what defines smarter? Why? A healthy self-image should literally go on a list after food water shelter & breathable air lol. Every little girl deserves to have her self esteem nurtured from the very beginning. Setting a foundation will go a long long way. BeYOUtiful

I totally agree with prevention. Another important thing all women should be taught is proper nutrition (healthy fats, protein, and carbohydrates). If women learn how to properly fuel their bodies for their menstrual cycle it would prevent a lot of eating disorders. Eat ENOUGH of the right foods and focus on nourishment, not restricting. Keep healing girl. - From one ED Warrior to another 💕

Because I can remember things as far back as 2 years old. Anyway, once again thank you. ❤

No didn’t you hear? It’s a “short film”. Ads are things people skip! But this is a work of art. This girls are so. so. so lucky to have mothers like this. This is coming from an 11 year old girl in California. I’m a young mixed girl with bushy eyebrows, noticeable upper lip hair, and dark body hair. My parents don’t realize that it’s not only social media, but school. Boys make comments on my thick thighs all the time. I should work out, but eat more, yet stay eating healthy. My arms are too skinny and my thighs are too thick. My foreheads too big and my eyebrows are high enough. My aunt says that as a young lady I have to throughly brush my hair day and night, wear nice bras and underwear, dress to please and attract. My uncle jokingly says I need botox for my forehead since I raise my eyebrows so much. I got told I couldn’t play soccer because I was a girl in second grade. Social media is even worse. You have flawless or unique skin and perfect hair. You can’t dress up the way you want, you have to dress up the way it’s acceptable to the rest of society. Please. Everyone who is reading this, stop creating this endless cycle. Realize this is the reality so many young girls like myself face everyday. Almost so much that it’s becoming normalized. Please, end the toxicity now. We didn’t just evolve to be even more judge-mental.

I'm genuinely interested how a similar experiment would turn out in South Korea, aka the capital of plastic surgery. Also, these days guys are affected as well. Not so much by beauty standards (although they exist to some degree for men as well) as by financial expectations such as owning a house and a car by a certain age and making X amount a year to be an "eligible" dating or husband material. Those are all very real things people in Korea go through and I know this because I've been living here for the past 10 years.

It hurt hearing everything knowing it’s not necessarily my fault I’m gaining weight so much.

After six children I am now heavy but the same weight for years. I get so annoyed with the mail from sales flyers where the make millions if not billions of dollars from plus size women but never had a plus size model or two to show what the clothes look like on them. Thus, a lot of merchandise has to be returned because it does not look good on a full size figure when if we know how to purchase correctly we could look very glamerous. Thank you, everything comes in different sizes from humans, plants, flowers and animals and we all have our own beauty. I wish you success in letting those who are changed by the media to realize that.

Minors shouldn't be given free reign of the internet. They also shouldn't be told that can chop off body parts & use hormones to not go through puberty either. There are horrific consequences. Also while it's proven social media affects females more than males, it still hurts boys and that you excluded them is fine - if you acknowledge some spaces are just for biological women and they deserve there own time.
