Did you know the narcissist, abusive, or toxic parent you have could be perceived as "normal" if they don't fit clinical criteria or symptoms of the label you feel fits them?
The world is frought with adult children who engage in obsessive labeling to bring meaning to their issues with their parents.
But the sad part is that the parent's toxic behavior may not rise to the so-called clinical level of pathology, leaving these parents untreated and free to deceive others.
A parent who is:
Jealous,
cold,
callous,
evil,
mean,
manipulative, etc. may not be given that clinical label but you still recognize there is something terribly wrong.
In this video, I discuss character pathology.

Sometimes family members can be one of the most confusing aspects of your life. One of the reasons why is because families often operate like a big city. Everyone is doing their own thing and trying to function. However, if one or more individuals decides to create chaos, the entire city shuts down. Even more, if that family member has calculating personality traits, things become more serious.

It's important to understand that"ill" or "sickness" is always the same, no matter if you have a label or not. Labels may muddy the waters a bit and they can help sometimes. It really depends on how you are using them and if your use of them will help you better understand your unhealthy parent. If your parent is a detrimental parent, whether or not they have a label, that's the truth and that is reality for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IF5FUaNQkVU.html

One thing I have discovered in this journey is those on the strong spectrum of the dark triad wouldn't be here or on any other RU-vid site trying to understand these dynamics. They might follow you here though. Great video. Thanks

Thank you Tamara for explaining this. I have problems with one of my family members since childhood, and at one point the person was tested, after ending up in a psych ward for a couple of days and it showed an indication of a personality disorder. The person never admited it and says they were in that hospital, which is only for mental health issues, for having high blood pressure. I can't tell is the person is refusing to accept this because it crashed the image of themselves or if the person is delusional. Also is it common that people with personality disorder are so delusional if that would be the case? If you have time to answer, I'd be very gratefull and thank you again for all that you do. You really help me so much and inspire me to give and help others. ❤

Help me out people: is Tamara saying labels don't matter. A parent can do a damaging job, label or not label? Why is she addressing this? Is it because some of us think our parents need a label in order for us to believe we were abused? I don't think my parents fit any labels, but I know my childhood was far from healthy.
@truth4utoda
@truth4utoda Год назад
I feel like it's quite clear Nancy. No matter what, your parent is still manipulative and exploiting everyone with or without a label. They can be just as harmful. Is that right Tamara?
@TherapistTamaraHill
@TherapistTamaraHill Год назад
Yes, that's it Nancy. I'm basically saying that even if your parent doesn't meet any "clinical criteria" they still may have a problem and that problem will never go away. This "problem" creates a toxic and unhealthy relationship between you and that parent, despite what the medical or psychological field may say.

Yes. I have been deeply wounded by parents whom had no official diagnosis, but buried their own wounds, making my childhood very challenging and caused me great harm. I often feel I am crazy to have become so dysregulated from unclassified trauma that others dismiss. Their lack of insight for their own issues, caused a sort of neglect and dismissive approach that had a tremendous impact on me, despite not having an official diagnosis. Sometimes I feel unworthy because I have not suffered the abuses that others have gotten over, yet I still struggle- even though I am in my 50’s. I wish there was more content on minor neglectful abandonment that can wreak havock on a child’s psyche and development.
