@@daemonscout88 I answer your question it is a lot better. I just avoided my former workplace altogether and it's the best decision anyone can make. Workplace toxicity can cause a lot of psychological and emotional problems and it can be bad for your mental health. Something should be done to address workplace toxicity and the affects it can cause to the point where a workplace cannot function accordingly.

Ha! Used to work for a major bank as a banker. Had a jerk of a manager who was taking accounts from one banker and giving them to his little "pet." How about absolutely crazy hours that constantly change. One day it was 5am to 1pm, next day 10am to 6pm or it could be a bunch of days, then one night shift, then days again. A supervisor that scolded me in front of the team on my first shift and frequently accused me of “being in a huff” based on facial expression alone and another supervisor who in legal terms, kidnapped me and another colleague and accused me of challenging her authority when I just wanted to help. But the incident was when we were so badly understaffed there were only two of us and neither of us were signed off on driving airside which meant 8-10 hours of walking that night. So he went home pretending to be unwell, abandoning me to try to clean five 737 airplanes across the night-which was impossible so I just did what I could. Okay that was bad enough, but when I came in the next night I discovered I’d be alone again but this time management had 24 hours to find me help and didn’t. That’s when I approached another company that did the same kind of work and escaped to them.

I am also applying to jobs outside of my current company. I hope to leave soon. My biggest fear is not finding a job during these times. Is it better to get fired or quit?
@fernandocontreras5138
@fernandocontreras5138 3 года назад
@@Dataisthetruth Hard question to ask. I think no one will be able to answer effectively better than yourself but, I do know that there are plenty of online jobs ever since the pandemic (that's what Im currently doing). I also know that if you quit you will have more time to dedicate into finding a job, thus increasing the possibility to find one. If your are searching I dont see how you wont end up finding another one. During that time, you can also schedule time to heal , and use the experience to search for another job , taking the time to figure out the enviroment/work culture. Its not possible to know how much time it would take you to find another one but, there are questions you can only answer by trying... Last advise, try not to dispare. Mistakes come from rushing. Schedule your job search activities by day and religiously adhere to them . Use that time as productively as possible to calmly but constaly place efforts to finding another job... Thats what I did... Hope it helps

@@JenniferBrick My advise is to remind your self that is nothing is permanent, that gives hope. Accompany that hope as a prayer and meet it half way with actions. Bring your attention to your body and mind to stay as calmed and focus as you can while working on your escape. Your entire body and mind are the most valuable and powerful tools to change the course of your life. Appreciate this machine as a gift (it is) and realize while you do, you have what it takes to change courses .Value every minute of your time to take care of yourself and to dedicate it towards the project of escape. While still working, remember that you are there because you want to. Try to remember why (have something near work station that will remind you) . This reminds you what like about your job and helps compensate negative feelings. Try not to hurry your self, keep calm. You can move fast while calm. Learn from the experience and use it to study the culture and implement what you learned to avoid working in a hostile workplace. Pay attention to your mind and train it to focus on solutions (escape), resume presentation, interview questions ( remember how I mentioned to remember why you are there? Use this positive energy to answer why you left .. you don't want to speak negatively about your previous work place. Remember that speaks more about you than them). Focus on your clothing, notebook, your own interview questions, sending job applications, using whatever network you have (including online networks, like social medias and job posting sites)... Maybe my last advise is to remember that if you are searching, there is no way possible you won't be able to find. Hope it helps

My workplace in the last 2 years (these have all happened to me): Bullying, harassment, theft, work tampering, gossiping, rumour spreading, back stabbing from colleagues and manager, exclusion, lying, hindering and hijacking my development, ignored by colleagues, threat of dismissal, overlooked for promotion on 4 occasions in favour of far inferior candidates, gaslighting and an EXTREME lack of professionalism! I needed to take 3 months off work in 2019 as my mental health deteriorated significantly. I’m still working at this horrendous place and I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know why this is happening however. When someone comes along with more experience, professionalism and ideas, they are perceived as a threat.

I am currently going through this. My coworkers constantly try to throw me under the bus. I was bullied the first eight months I was there. I told my boss and he said I was wrong. I am severely overworked. I basically do the job of two people. I constantly have the sales team try to snitch on me by including all of the bosses on emails to let them know that I am falling behind. The crazy thing is that I’m not behind. I’m double the productivity of the last person in my position (I have the data to back it up). On top of this I have been insulted about my looks. I am yelled at by this one person that can get away with anything. She literally called me on day and yelled at me for over ten minutes in front of my boss that said nothing. Oh and my boss was just fired and everyone is pointing fingers at everyone, me especially. Wednesday I finally had a breakdown and I went outside and sobbed uncontrollably. I called my dad hyperventilating telling him to come and get me now because I was seeing blood red and was just needed to get out of there. He came and got me, I went to the hospital because my chest and my head was hurting. I have been off for two days and I feel a bit better but I know I have to leave. I cannot work at a place that treats me like shit. I almost quit so I had to leave. Now I am going to document everything until I can get the hell out of there.

I had zero training. They just stuck me in my office and said to watch webinars. After a few weeks they (my two bosses) said “ok you should be ready to go”. They threw me in the deep end and I sank and sank hard. It was horrific. They literally laughed at me, belittled me, offered me zero help and gossiped about me to the rest of the department. I honestly don’t know why companies are run like this or how people make it to the top like this. I asked in the interview about training and they assured me it was a “wonderful program”. They put me in a class with no curriculum, no training and no clue of the students needs and asked me to teach (had no experience). I kept asking for months for help or shadow a former tutor and they would refuse (by giving silly excuses). I had to work extra hours, do the job of others and was still getting 0 acknowledgment for that. Next stage? Shouting, swearing, gossiping, betrayal, threat of dismissal, blaming. Final stage? Panic attack, BYE :* happy to have found myself again.❤You can do it too, you don’t need their ‘’approval’’. Don’t let them determine your value and you’re all good.

The worst thing is, my bosses know all about it and simply couldn't care less. They know I am overworked and they justify my lazy co-workers. One of the co-workers is extremely toxic and untouchable because the is a family member of the Big Boss and she harasses and molest everybody and enjoys it tremendously. She spies on us and believes everything is her business.She dislikes me very much even though I try my hardest to stay out of her way. She is always first to pick a fight with someone and everybody secretly dislikes her, to say the least. I have had enough and am looking for a new job because this one is going to cost me my health.

I worked with a company for 10 years. It’s a convenience store and I was a pizza cook. They kept cutting hours. I had to do my job making pizzas, do all the trash, clean the parking lot, clean the store floors and anything else that the other people didn’t want to do. I worked 10 hour shifts. I am recovering from Esophageal cancer. I started having other health issues. I tried getting my boss to get more help. She said corporate wouldn’t let her hire anyone. Two nights I worked all by myself. They expected us to get things done and be out of the store in 15 minutes. I had just had enough. My anxiety was through the roof. I just walked in one day and turned in my key and quit. I had washed up my shirts and hats. I laid them on the desk and she grabbed them up and threw them in her trash. She said I was being selfish. She sorta brow beat me out in the store and we had a few customers in there. I’ve updated my resume and am looking for another job. My feelings are so hurt because I invested 10 years with the company but at the end they didn’t care about my health. I am not using that manager’s name and phone number on my resume or job applications. I ‘m afraid she wouldn’t give me a good reference.

I need help. My workplace checks off everything Jennifer covered in this video. When an individual does an amazing job and goes above and beyond, and is treated poorly as a result, while other employees who do less are treated much better and given tons of praise and are more favored. It has become so bad that I don't even want to be around anyone. I'm avoiding even seeing family and friends. I need advice. I want to search for a new job while staying employed, but I just don't have the mental energy; and my self esteem is practically non-existent because of the toxic work environment. Any advice would be very appreciated.
@JenniferBrick
@JenniferBrick 4 года назад
First thing you need to focus on is compartmentalization. Remember: unless a hard look at yourself reveals an evil jerk (which I highly doubt it will), this had everything to do with them and nothing to do with you. Being exceptional is hard, and it's very triggering to people who aren't. This may be why you're being singled out. I totally get most people don't just have piles of money lying around to quit, and when you're on a toxic workplace it can take a toll on your mental health. Set a firm boundary when you're on personal time, and find something that will recharge your battery and switch your mindset. Go for a run, meditate, have a shower and visualize the negative washing down the drain (I know this is super hippe, but water is an great energy cleanser), put on your favorite music and dance, or call your most uplifting friend. Then set 1-2 hour on your search. Track your progress and you wins. 'applied to a job' or 'reached out to an old colleague' count! But the most important thing I want you to do, and I want you to do it right now. Write down ten reasons why you're an amazing employee and FANTASTIC at what you do. This will help you in your job search, and you can look to it when you have a hard day to reset to reality (that you are awesome). I highly suggest making this a habit (at least one thing everyday) and doing a daily gratitude too, but start here. It will feel hard to write down 10, but once you get there you'll find more areas of awesomeness come to mind and it get easier the more you write. And focus on creating that positivity bubble for yourself, my friend. I hope this helps 💜

Take Jennifer's advice, or if its really THAT bad (cuz I've been there and I know it can almost be debilitating), then get a part-time job and quit the toxic job. Get a job as a cashier or customer service agent (if you are one for a call center, that means you get paid to sit in a class room and call centers can pay up to $15/hr). Try to get something above $10 but like I said if its so bad and you know you cant take one more day, get something quickly and then bounce. No joke I made almost $100 with instacart in one day. The norm was like $280 a week (i live in a small town). You don't have a boss, and now more than ever people are having stuff delivered to them and workers get hazardous pay. If you have a car. You can start making money instantly with instacart. No, I'm not being paid to say this but I'm speaking from experience that app really helped me when I had to leave a job due to being harassed.

I worked 12 years in a toxic environment. It got me 3 years of counseling and antidepressants. It's not worth it. Managers would tell you what they wanted done at the beginning of the shift. Then they'd disappear into their office until end of shift. They'd tell you "We have an open door policy." But they'd never address the issue. When you presented them with concerns. It got so bad,I got physically assaulted by a coworker to get me to leave the company so that I would quit. I went all the way to the VP. His response, "What do you want me to do about it?" I was in shock it happened, even though I tried to prevent it until I could get another job. I was relieved I’d never have to go back. I was scared about what I would do about my finances in the future. I think what told me, none of that had been my fault, was when I won my unemployment hearing against my old employer. The state sided with me, and said there was no misconduct on my end, and was eligible for unemployment. I’ve done a lot of self improvement since then, and I’m finally seeing more interest in my applications.

Hi! You've got a lot of great advice in this video. I just wanted to add something to Step 3, if I may. If someone feels a toxic situation is escalating and they need to start documenting things, I think it's really important to make multiple copies and store them in offsite locations. If there are emails that are part of your documentation, forward them to an email address not on the company's server, or print them out and keep a physical file at home. If there are other papers or physical documents, make sure to make copies and take them to an offsite location. It absolutely wouldn't surprise me if a company's IT department is able to get into your work email account or desktop and delete potentially incriminating files, emails, or other documents.
@JenniferBrick
@JenniferBrick 4 года назад
I fell behind on comments - and I'm fully of regret because you absolutely nailed the importance of keeping documents. It's a fine line where need to maintain confidentiality and comply with company record policies you agreed to - but yes, most IT departments will halt your access immediately and can wipe files (even from you phone if you gave them permission).

They chose the toxic employee over one that goes above and beyond and I chose my freedom and health.

There seem to be a lot of toxic workplaces out there sadly and have experienced it myself a 2 former jobs- it's absolutely confidence ruining and can leave some with CPTSD or professional burnout unfortunately. Glassdoor somewhat helps to gain insight into companies but in some cases it can only do so much. Sadly sometimes the positive (and negative reviews) aren't reliable so you need to use your discretion and try to find how long people usually stay at the company using LinkedIn for insight into turnover. Thanks for going in depth with all the signs. Having a positive mindset helps but also having a plan B and savings is key.
@JenniferBrick
@JenniferBrick 4 года назад
I'm a big believer in always having an exit strategy - you just never know what's going to happen. And you're right, Glassdoor can be a good tool when you know how to assess it, but there are also a lot of binary reviews which make it hard to get an accurate read. I've also heard of several companies that compensate team members for positive reviews (this is officially against Glassdoor policy, but they have no way to detect this). I'm working on a collab with an expert in workplace emotions on a video about toxic workplace recovery. Stay tuned!

My company is extremely toxic. None of us want to go to the office, it's full of resentment, secrecy, mean-spiritedness, and gossip. The higher ups insist that we go to the stupid office every day, even though there is no reason to be there more than maybe once a week (paperwork). We have fought to work from home, but they insist on forcing us to go to that poisonous hellhole! Everyone just goes in their offices and keeps the door closed all day. Or women are gossiping behind the doors 🤦‍♀️ The CEO acts like we don't exist, and the managers have way too much on their plate. It's a shitshow.

@@JolyneLP covid makes everything challenging, but being new and still establishing yourself here amplifies it. You have the longish term strategy, which is great. As you navigate toxicity in your work and personal life focus on these two things: First: maintaining your confidence. Toxic people will tear it to shred. Remember, whatever they say it do to you had nothing to do with you even if it feels like it is. Take time everyday to remind yourself why you're so awesome. It feels absurd, but do it because it will help. The second thing is in taking positivity. Subscribe to uplifting channels here, listen to inspiring podcasts, watch funny shows. If you need someone to tell you you're awesome just message me and I promise I will, because you are. On the other side of this is an unstoppable successful you. You will get through this 💜

@@JenniferBrick thank you so much for the advice and believing in me. You are right when you said that toxic people will tear my confidence to shred. I have become more timid and lack the courage to speak for myself or to be confident in doing things. I think the constant indirect hinting and blaming me have caused me to be more afraid and doubtful of what I do. However, I am lucky to still have people who are even miles away that are more encouraging and understanding. I also have some few friends here that are same as well. I do love listening and watching videos that I can relate to or get some good and useful advice like yours! Especially when I don't know what to do in certain situations. My last job had all those toxic things, so I quit, I made this decision when a coworker threatened me in a meeting in front of a provider, it was quite embarrassed and disrespectful in my opinion, and one week later my boss was obligate to quit his job and then I realized that is the company culture, many of people used to act in a toxic way.

These are excellent points of advice, and I have run into them. Here's another, and it tends to correlate with all these 14 signs. If you complete a project and it generates revenue for the company, and suddenly people start giving you dirty looks, making passive-aggressive jokes, yelling at you, threatening you, pretending you didn't do what you did do, or lying about you, that is a clear indicator that you will be fired. Workplace mobbing, in other words. If your boss suddenly displays this behavior after you accomplish something, that is almost a guarantee. If your coworkers have not done anything comparable, triple the chances. The simple fact is that the market is a very brutal place, and discovering new revenue streams is something that most people can't do, even people such as CEO's or MBA's. But bullying, gossiping, lying, destroying careers and reputations, creating collective narratives where you are the bad guy - these are things that almost anyone can do.

Thanks for your lecture. I work at McDonald's and I wanted to get out of there three months after I started there. I had already started looking for a new home to move to. I mean every terrible thing you can think of goes on at this place. The management is responsible they suck! I got my resumes together a few weeks ago I typed them up having copies and on my on my email. I picked out like 30 companies and I slowly went thru each one and now I have it whittled down to about 10. I started gathering facts about them ,where theyre located and other information. Now I'm going to start working on the cover letters and start applying. I'm moving to Las Vegas in November and I'm very excited cuz there's tons of work good pay and great benefits.

I caught my boss and the office manager talking about me in the hall where everyone could hear. They were talking about my childcare situation during the covid 19 shutdown my boss told the manager “she should use that stimulus check and pay for a baby sitter how hard can it be geez” just the week prior he had told me to feel free to take off this month because the kids have to finish school from home and I hadn’t even asked for the time ! This week I told them I needed 1 day off and this is how I’m repaid?! Even though my other coworkers took off for weeks and I still came in 2 x a week to work during shut down

I have been in my current role for 6 months and like anything new, it took me a while to adjust. As the months went on it was becoming apparent that this wasn’t going the way I imagined in my mind. I was really surprised at the lack of support and training as well as essentially being thrown into a role and having high expectations put on me. It was quite tough as it was a very small team, just me another person doing it as the first week I started the other two staff members left. I was also not trained properly as I had four different trainers with conflicting opinions which made things so confusing. I also had to prove myself to my own manager as I was clearly underestimated when I first started but opening up to her we have build a good relationship. My colleague also left over two weeks ago now and having snapped at me the week before. With all that being said, I am also currently being hassled by one of the older staff and yes my boss is aware of it, I was told it was her personality but at the same time I guess I have to learn to stand my ground. This particular person is probably in her 60s compared to me being a 25 year old. My previous roles environment wasn’t perfect either but I guess no workplace is. I’m currently on the hunt for a new role, somewhere for a better opportunity. Even though my relationship with my boss is now so much better, I still feel like leaving, although I believe in perseverance I think it’s a balance of what you want to do, either you stay where you are or you leave. I share an office off the plan open plan office and they are all with other women so you can imagine how catty it can get. I’m proud of myself for how I’ve handled the past months but also asking myself where to from here.

Someone at my job went around taking pics of other employees on their phone. (You're not allowed to be on your phone at my job) They sent the pics to hr and the people who got pics taken of got wrote up. Someone, which i know who it was now, took a pic of my phone screen and an actual conversation i was having on messenger. I must have walked away and they went behind me and took the pic. When I got wrote up, there was a photo copy of my conversation. I work in a fast paced environment and i answered a quick message from my girlfriend and walked away to another station i was also working at, but my phone was at my main station, which is where i spent most of the day at. I was pissed to say the least, when I saw the photo copy of my conversation. It took about a month for me to find out who did it. I never bothered this person or did anything to them. Me being on the phone for about 10 seconds didn't or doesn't affect my job at all. I still perform at a high level and do my job. Anyways, I told this person that what they did was wrong and that they had no character. I also called them a SNITCH. He went back to hr and told them what i said. Hr wrote me up again for disrespecting another employee. WTF !!! This is the type of work environment i work in folks

Thats what the older fucking generation needs to understand. If you're on your phone for a few seconds, it doesn't stop your productivity at work. You can actually multi task just like if you were on a work phone while typing an email or inputting data. This was an issue at my last job as well. I'd actually see the manager on his phone and the lady next to him would be too but he wouldn't say anything. Yet when I would step outside to be courteous when I was on my phone, he'd follow me outside or try to chastise me even though company policy would be if you're on your phone then you need to be outside so you don't distract others.

I have left a toxic workplace, it was the most toxic in my decades of experience. I'm in a better place now but at that time I was left severely depressed that affected my physical health and properly traumatised. I cried a lot (I rarely cry), for the next few years I was terrified of the same thing would happen in the next workplace and could never trust anyone at work. I quickly moved jobs twice after that place JUST so then I can officially remove them from job reference section on my resume. I wish you made this video back then but I've seen and enjoy some of your other videos, thank you!
