Toys and minimalism... sounds contradictory but minimalism is about being intentional. In this video, we find as many toys as we can in the house and our crawl space, then spend the day playing with them. Toys not played with for 1 or 2 years, and then we decide what to keep and donate the rest.
I don't know if there is a magic number for toys when talking about minimalism, but my kids intentionally hung onto some favorites and let go of a large bin of their toys. We talked about donating to other families, and why it's important to give forward.
As we continue to declutter the crawl space this year, I am sure more bins of toys will be revealed to us to declutter.

We started decluttering my 6year old daughters room yesterday. As she got rid of each item she said she would "always remember it in my heart". She came up with that, but it really helped. She gets attached to everything and I don't want this to be a point of stress. I took her lead and we have a great donate pile! Also she commented how nice her room will be to play in now😃

This is the perfect age to start decluttering with your kids. Marie Kondo points out that we tell our kids to 'clean up' but we never actually teach them how and with the hyper-consumerist culture they are raised in, it can also be hard, with so much given to them, to learn how to listen to their own bodies about what 'sparks joy'. With my son (now 7), we have a major declutter in the summer right before his birthday and before the holidays. I have him hug each stuff animal for a 'hug test' and he keeps what passes muster. With books and toys, we lay each category out and talk about what he has. Clothing I purge on my own with my husband based on what fits and then we make a list of when we need to get him for the next six months. He's gotten into the mindset that he will sometimes hand me something he is no longer interested in unprompted!

As I took a sip of my coffee, one of the kids said “Do you want bacon & eggs?” 🤣😍 I almost lost the coffee, I tell you that little voice was gorgeous. I just love your personality! I “encouraged” 🤣 my youngest to help me clean out his closet, that was a complete disaster, when he was around 6-7 yrs old. He was a kid and of course it got messy in his room from time to time, but it never got that bad again. I think he didn’t want to go through that again, and by helping, it clicked in his mind where everything went, so when I told him to clean up his room, the process wasn’t overwhelming. As a teen he even had his shirts organized by color. I created a monster in his little type A personality, but his fiancé has already thanked me. 🤣

Well done!!! 💪🏻 STUFFED animals: some police and fire stations will take super clean ones. They keep them in the police cars to give to kids in traumatic situations. It makes parting with sentimental toys much easier if you think about how they help in a time of need. 🤗

I always remember my mum declutter in when I was at school and most of my treasures were lost so I always include my kids as much as possible. What you see as trash is their treasure!!

You're so awesome to teach your kids and just great in general. I tackled decluttering my car and a lightbulb went off while looking at the ruined items I had to toss. Wow, your kids are so sweet to give away the toys that are more fun than the ones that they are keeping, I know it's not funny but I laughed at the look on your face when you discovered 3 more kitchen boxes, if it's any conclusion we are having a new roof this year so our attic has to be emptied !!!!!! Suggestion from an older Mom....each child gets one bin, and can choose what to put in it. That's all the room they get. That way they choose what is most important to them.. Your son is so sweet.

One year when we didn't have any money to give to some short-term missionaries, my kids gave up lots of their toys to sell to make $100 to give to the missionaries. I loved both the decluttering and the fact that the kids felt connected and invested in the missionaries that we prayed for.

Rewatching for motivation- I need to do this again with my kids! I don’t think we went far enough the first time and I’ve definitely noticed one of my kids didn’t play with hardly any of the gifts he got for Christmas so it’s time to send them along so he has more room to play with his few favorite toys and for all the books he loves to read now.

Good grief I love watching you! I had a meltdown over kids toys this weekend. 🤦‍♀️ You give me serious hope and motivation. Thank you for the content you are putting out. We homeschool too and I feel like we can never get into the classroom until my house is not in total disarray and then I looked back in the afternoon and realized how much time was wasted decluttering and tidying the house and how much time was missed with my kids, reading, and learning together. I love how you did this. I find my kids are way more ruthless than me. I'm such a hoarder at heart and one thing I had very little of as a kid were toys... which I think in hindsight was a really good thing - but I overcompensated with my kids. Live and learn though right. I have had many subscribers suggest your content to me and I'm so thrilled they have. So inspirational and I think we're alike in our down to earth and truthful take on this minimalism journey. (PS. I am glad you decided to involve your kids in choosing which of their toys to keep! My husband's family moved three times when he was young. He didn't have very much to begin with and with each move, he would have even less. On the last move, he ended up with three sets of clothes, one set of sheets, his bed and his dresser. The only things he managed to hold onto were his GI Joes, and that was because he had them in his school bag that he carried on him. His mom would use a move as an opportunity for spring cleaning. Oddly enough, she eventually became a packrat. Even today, he feels that disrespect.

Loved the video- awesome of you to involve the kiddies, not sure I would have even tried that at their age. The best thing I found when decluttering toys with the kids (best thing actually throughout whole process) has been I gave my children a container/bin and told them we could only choose our favorites to fit in that one bin. If it didn't fit it was too much and we had to let it go or let something else go. It's been a visual limitation. We also only have toys in one area- their room. I have previously moved some items to the attic just to test if they'd miss it or ask for it within a time frame, but they never did. I quickly learned throughout the process that kids have their favorite things, and toys or clothing that I thought they would love they had NO interest in. Many years and much money wasted on all of that. It's awesome you're doing this now- my oldest was 15 and youngest aged 7 when I started this journey.

I'm decluttering toys too and wow is it overwhelming!! I was inspired to do this because when I opened up the toy closet there was a poo smell. One of the dogs broke a very important rule and so for the last two days I've been playing the game "where is the poop" haha!! Sigh! Love how your dog helped too!!

Definitely worth teaching them how to purge. We did it at least 2 x a year. After birthdays and Christmas.(and sometimes summer) I explained how some kids are lucky to have just 1 toy and we are helping them have something new. Best things I did was teach my child how to be generous and how to save.
