Toy Story 5: Andy, now 50, is going around buying Woody, Buzz, etc. from various antique shops and ends with the toys in a showcase in Andy's home. Toy Story 6: The toys grapple with watching Andy pass away at 70 and wonder what to do with themselves, while lamenting the last 20 years was a bit stale as they were cooped up in a display case with no one playing. They also watch nervously as other people pack up Andy's stuff and furniture and making plans to renovate or tear down the house. Meanwhile, another side plot of the movie can see them dealing with Andy's grandchildren, who are not interested in toys anymore, and are instead playing Wreck It Ralph on their Disney-Station-Box-One

I’m disappointed the idea of Parenthood wasn’t explored. Looking at Toys as the equivalent to parents and the kids as children was always a compelling take to me. A quick example: now that Andy has gone to college, Woody, a parent with an empty nest, doesn’t know what to do with himself. He needs a new purpose, and that’s what he goes to explore in this movie. Meanwhile, Gabby was incapable of having a kid because she had a defective voice box, a barren womb. She obsessively clings to the possibility of having a kid though it was not in her cards. Ultimately, she and Woody find a way to reconcile with their situations and find new ways to love children despite the circumstances. That’s my take, anyway.

Adding to this, similar to what was said in the video, Bo Peep is basically over being a mother, so she breaks free. Something a lot of parents can relate to where they realise living for their children isn't what they actually wanted (a very difficult situation to be in!)

GameStation3 I’m not blaming Bonnie, that makes sense, I’m blaming the writers for choosing to tell this story. The movies have always been about woody, but they didn’t need to be. It just doesn’t make sense to ruin the story of woody because every time you watch the ending of toy story 3 you know woody made the wrong choice by putting himself in the box. Buzz on the other never had the true affection from Andy because he was a fad toy so make it about him instead.

GameStation3 well yea, and the ending of toy story 3 presents an optimistic new future for woody and his friends. Why tell more if you are going to undo it all? Woody probably made it just as long.

3 was the perfect ending, it also felt like a goodbye to my childhood when I watched it (when I was 13). Maybe I have just grown up, but I didn't enjoy TS4 as much as everyone else, though I realise it's for a new audience. I didn't find any relation to it and it felt like a longer version of the TV shows. The animation is amazing though and still enjoyable in a way, just not the perfect conclusion everyone was hyping it out to be. There will be a 5th and maybe a 6th.

I also am mixed at best with 'Toy Story 4' - but I will dissent and say that '4' was absolutely not for a new audience. It speaks more to the paternal side of people who grew up with the films and are now parents. I took kids (6-10 years old) on field trips to see the film and they didn't connect with it as well as you'd expect. The film is definitely not for a new audience.

Watching TS4, I remember thinking it started as a critique of Paternalism: Woody's assuming he knows what is right for Bonnie is criticised when he attempts to usurp the role as "lead toy" and do what he thinks is right for Bonnie against the collective decision of the other toys. Yet in the end, it is the toys that decide what is right for Bonnie in a situation they clearly are not qualified to judge (sabotaging the family car and possibly getting the father arrested!) so - paternalism, Yay? Then there's the whole ignoring Forky's clearly suicidal desires for the entire course of the film, which also bothered me (I know she comes around at the end when Knifey appears, but you cannot argue Forky's desires were not clear up to that point). It all made for a philosophically incoherent film for me!

IMO part of the problem with Toy Story 4 is that the message and character arcs completely fly in the face of the previous movies, especially Toy Story 2. In 2 Jesse learns, with Woody's help, that a toy can move on and find the love of a child again. However in 4 Woody essentially says that he'll never get over Andy. Not to mention how Buzz's characterisation in 4 makes zero sense, they completely Flanderized him and forgot the rest of the toys almost completely.

Toy Story pretty much undoes the message of the previous 3 films which is about being there for your friends and family through thick and thin. Woody has already gone through the existential crisis of not being wanted when in Toy Story 2 he realizes that Andy is growing up and won’t play with Woody anymore one day. Which lead to Woody being accepting of the idea of being preserved in museum forever with all his memorabilia. But Buzz reminds Woody that being there for your kid was the important thing as a toy. ( Also it doesn’t make sense that Buzz doesn’t know what to do as a stand in leader when Woody is gone in 4, when he literally leads a rescue party in 2) Then in Toy Story 3 when Andy finally does grow up, the toys accept that their kid has grown up and they move on to a new kid together as a family. The problem with Toy Story 4 is that for some reason Woody is the only toy that gets completely neglected, but Woody being the good guy that his, is still there for his current kid. It’s not until that he runs into ex girlfriend (Bo Peep) that the issue leaving comes up. The only reason the toys are ok with Woody leaving is because they see he’s just completely neglected now. In 2 they rescued Woody because they know Andy loves him. But now it’s basically, “yeah you’re not wanted anymore, maybe you’re better off running away with your ex?” Also I don’t get the point of toys being free when all toys gave shown the most important thing that they care about is being played with. Also it’s depressing to see Woody give up and let his voice box and string removed all for nothing. Overall it’s like the writers didn’t watch the previous 3 films, Toy Story 4 is just another nostalgia cash grab from Disney and Disney will continue to make unnecessary sequels and remakes because they still make a lot money.

I know this is an old comment, but I agree with you. And I really don't like that the narrator translates this as ultimately an Anti-God movie. I have given this movie three years to change my mind. Toy Story 4 came on television tonight and I still say the same thing I did in 2019: Toy Story 4 felt like a really good FANFICTION and should have NEVER been created. Every time I watch it, I feel like I'm hallucinating because I don't believe most of the dialogue and choices the toys I grew up with are making. The franchise should have stopped with TS3. Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending.

What if it is a cautionary tale about the dangers of unconditional love? Unconditional love is a beautiful concept on paper, but in practice it leaves you open to abuse and feeling worthless instead of leaving the relationship. You give yourself meaning by trying to be loved, but in the end you probably go away from the relationship and go love yourself.

The movie teaches kids that no matter what wrong you do, you can still get away with it. Suicide is funny. Depression is funny. It's ok to abandon those you love without saying goodbye to start a life with someone you haven't known for years and who is now a completely different person who does nothing but demean, condescend, and control you. All of this is proven by the directors when they explain in the commentary that in order for them to convey a specific mood to illicit a particular response, they had to play music from the previous movies to invoke a feeling of nostalgia.

Your Bo interpretations glaze right over the fact that her story starts with HER being rejected. She doesnt make the **choice** to leave, and she doesn't **reject** others to leave. Shes a victim of her circumstance and she made the best out of being rejected or "turned into trash" herself.

My core issue here is Pixar's unwillingness to commit to making a real antagonist and the one they did have they refused to hold that antagonist accountable for her choices. The psycho doll terrorized the gang and likely many other toys yet gets a happy ending. The bear in #3 or Stinky Pete in #2 didn't get the same treatment. One was given to a little girl who will likely defile him until he gets trashed and the other was tied to the front of a truck to eat bugs for the foreseeable future. Instead, we get a villain who's able to hold our protagonist down, defile him, and take what is his under duress only for us all to then be Stockholmed into empathizing her for being rejected so we can then be happy for her happy ending. Kind of gives kids the impression that girls are above normal rules of accountability so long as they can play the victim card.

Nope, you are not alone. I had this conversation last weekend. You know? i never felt a real closure with TS3, at least not like with the 4th movie. Why? Because what I loved as a kid was the idea of toys being alive! Having dreams, feelings, bonds, a sense of humor, responsibility and morality. They have motivations and regrets. They're like us. Yeah, fuck it, TS4 made me cry too. Also, amazing crew. Visuals are absolutely beautiful.

You're not alone!! I loved toy story 3 but the ending was too easy.. Toy stoty 4 started strong with the fact that Bonnie is not Andy and Woody is Andy's toy 4 life and this added an extra layer of realism .. That ending with Bo and being a free toy was the best more complex and necessary ending to complete Woody's journey.

I'm planning to blog about this movie because it was so good. Very few people caught the themes on the level which you have covered here, and I think you are spot-on. I agree with the "children-as-gods" interpretation of this movie, rather than the "parenthood" angle--which is only truly present in the relationship between Woody and Forky, but is not a common theme among all the characters. Also, a lot of people were confused that Woody and Bo would help other toys find children when it is a life they left behind. As you point out, the different is *choice*, and in terms of a toy's life arch, Bo and Woody are in a much different "season of life" than most of the toys they are helping (including Gabby Gabby, who is "older", but never had the experience of having a child, so she is arrested in a sense). In my opinion, this is the best Toy Story in terms of theme.
