My favorite (makes you cry) sound track from Disney is the "married life" sound track of the movie Up. So SAD!! I'm a grown man! Why am I crying!!! 😭 😭
@@ajbp95 Yes! I think that one is the most heart-wrenching piece in the series. Just thinking about the montage from Toy Story 2 is giving me the feels 😢
"Take something that's very strong... and kinda just... break it." If that's not life. Randy Newman has a gift for authenticity that I only found as I got a bit older.
Honestly, as a kid I wasn’t going “yes! He’s a real space ranger!” and being sad when he wasn’t, I was heartbroken that his worldview and sense of who he was was getting shattered.
@john_michael the music protrays that perfectly, especially if you think about it, the descending F augmentation when he’s falling kinda symbolizes his world view crashing down and accepting a new, sad, reality. Thanks for giving me that interpretation!! 😃
Randy Newman is the BEST at combining New Orleans blues and gospel harmonies with the orchestration of show tunes and classic pop songs. That combination is so recognizable, I always just think of it as Randy Newman chords.
Weird side note, if you like that style only with a little more of a prog element, The Dear Hunter does a TON of that exact mixture, New Orleans blues mixed with gospel harmonies and crazy math rock. Absolutely buck. Totes worth a listen.
its just fascinating how snarky and cynical his lyrical songs are, but I can only describe his scores as whimsical and playful, an idealistic old fashioned Americana feel about a country that is very lovely but probably never was.
Personally, I think the way the instrumentation of "Strange Things" in Toy Story is also worth looking at. The number of instruments and complexity of sounds builds every chorus.
You remind me of one of my music professors. Just the excitement of what he's hearing and explaining to us, theoretically, made it exciting to us to want to learn more. Love what you do, Charles.
The thing that is really amazing to me is how composers make such memorable songs for kids movies. Since Toy Story, for example is a movie that I grew up watching in my childhood and now as an adult, these movie themes are so nostalgic and sentimental and they make me tear up every time I hear them 🥲
Randy Newman always the most wild harmonizations that somehow don't feel out of place at all. For extra Randy Newman heartbreak, maybe look at "When She Loved Me", which was performed by Sarah McLachlan for Toy Story 2. Absolute gut punch
I am beyond gratified to hear someone appreciate the genius of this composition and give it the analysis it deserves. Thank you so much for this. I've loved this song for years and years and I watched this video with a smile on my face.
I know NOTHING of pianos and piano chords and most of the terms youre using. But i enjoy watching you disect these songs. And your pure JOY and excitement for playing and the sounds. Idk how to explain it. Its cool hearing someone explain why/how a song works
Charles passion is contagious. I always go straight for the piano after his videos filled with new found will and joy to just play and explore the harmony progression presented. Thank you Charles!
Randy certainly knows A HELLUVA LOT about how to go around diminished chords. You can almost always hear plenty of them in all of his soundtracks, and it's awesome how he does it. My personal favourite is "That'll do Babe" with Peter Gabriel. It's a real tear jerker for me.
Charles, just gotta say, you've really inspired me to get back into music theory. I've been active on an amateur level for many years, but haven't used theory since high school. Now I'm making circle of fifths on every piece of scrap paper I find, just to keep working on it, and I've started to make an arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on piano. The way you describe and explain is really really helpful! So thank you.
The most emotional Randy Newman song is "When she loved me" from Toy Story 2. Heat breaking. I'd love a breakdown of that one :) Randy and Thomas Newman are some of my favorite movie composers. Those guys write with their hearts and make you feel it.
Not enough people talk about I Will Go Sailing No More. It's every bit as heartbreaking as When She Loved Me. Newman's music in these films is brilliant. He was the perfect person for these movies.
This part of the movie always gives me a lump in the throat and then goose bumps, partially because of the story and character development, but it wouldn't have the same impact without the music. Thanks for the break down. I will again have to watch this multiple times to fully catch everything you are pointing out.
That part at 13:51-14:12 with Charlie just going along with the song and play all the amazing chords just demonstrates how good the writing is and how good Charles is at demonstrating what makes it great
Man, I'm early. Recently purchased the course bundle and super excited to get into it! Been a long time since I've taken piano lessons and you've totally sparked my love for the instrument again. Thanks a lot Charles! :)
One of my favorite Disney songs ,or songs in general is "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes " from Disney's 1950 Cinderella ... It feels so simple yet so sentimental ,or from the same movie "Sing Sweet Nightingale" .Ilene Woods had such a dreamy voice
the toy story song that breaks my heart every time is in the sequel, sung by Sarah McLachlan, titled "when somebody loved me". Gorgeous arrangement and performance by randy and Sarah.
I've just discovered your channel, and I love your style Charles. You're not putting on a silly presenter voice, you're just being you, you're nerding out on things you love and its so refreshing to have the experience of watching your videos. I was a massive fan of Toy Story as a child and became a musician later on so have a wonderful appreciation for this whole video. Thank you so much for making this. New subscriber right here :)
Love how Charles can manage to explain a lot of this without much in-depth theory, just the logic of where some lines move and others stay the same to create specific feelings, and it makes perfect sense.
i'm so glad you made a video on this. the toy story soundtracks are music masterpieces and randy newman is just an absolute god! this track makes me sad whenever i hear it, and this is why buzz will forever be my favourite toy story character ever. this scene and this music.
I've always been a big fan of the key changes in You'll Be In My Heart from Tarzan. Starts in F major, then to D major for the chorus, back to F, back to D, then up to E for the climax. Really powerful and fun sound.
Love this. This is one of the most beautiful songs, and despite being easy to appreciate, it's really really deep in terms of theory. Thanks so much for the break down!
Randy Newman is a lyrical, musical, and comedic genius. One of the first songs I learned on piano was his song “short people.” The Toy Story franchise would not be the same without him. Nobody is mentioning it, but I loved his song from the 4th movie “I can’t let you throw yourself away.”
That was an insane composition. The complexity of the piece & the use of chords as motifs in the song to create a sense of nostalgia from familiarity is mindblowing. Bravo Randy 👏
Charles' Black Friday sale is a great deal. I highly recommend beginner & intermediate musicians grab it! I've been a piano teacher for over 20 years and students who take initiative to learn more on their own always advance faster.
I just bought the black friday sale a few days ago and I'm so glad I did! Learning so much and it's giving me so much work to do. So excited to be able to break down songs the way Charles does.
I always thought the song "Strange Things" from Toy Story was such a good unique song, I could never figure out what genre I'd put it in but I really enjoy that one.
Definitely one of my favorites! It seems so underrated unfortunately, but I think it’s great with its symbolism of being replaced and what that feels like and/or sounds like!
Your videos have helped me so much in discovering the wonderful world of jazz and actually how it works. I now understand so much of how it works and I thank you!!
Man, this video gives me chills. This soundtrack defined the Disney sound, and Randy Newman is such an incredible musician. Awesome vid, I love geeking out with you! xD
Randy's arrangements and orchestrations are like the platonic ideal of every piece of music he's ever composed. I don't understand how he does it, but he finds every piece that fits perfectly in every place, every time, and creates something truly profound.
Just realised the opening is yet another piece of music in the grand old history of The Avengers progression - fitting for Buzz trying to reconcile his identity as a quasi-superhero and his reality as a mass-produced plastic toy Fully, earnestly, and unreservedly LOVE this song
I love the hsrmony here, i understand chord substitution and borrowed chords. I dont use it often with the type of metal i play. Every mode and even some techniques make me think in a different genre.
Great video Charles! Would love some more Randy Newman videos, “when she loved me” is another brilliant toy story soundtrack tune Also it’s interesting to watch this video and compare the harmony to his song “Louisiana 1927” very similar techniques in the B7 to Bm7 changes Keep up the good work 😄
Gracias bro, es excelente lo que hacés.. saludos desde Argentina! Tu Energía, Entusiasmo y Amor por la música se perciben mas allá de de cualquier idioma.
Is it weird that the second I see any toy from Toy Story, “you got a friend in me” automatically plays in my head? Honestly, this song is definitely the one most stuck in my head, even though I’m not the biggest Toy Story fan.
I've always loved the sound of the monsters inc. soundtrack, it's probably the first jazz related thing I ever heard in my life. I especially love the scare floor track, fitts the theme of the film so well.
It has been 25 years since I saw this movie for the first time and this part still makes me so emotional. As a kid it made me sad that Buzz could not fly and I cried. But now as an adult you understand that for Buzz is just reality hitting you in the face. He discovers that his life is not what he thought it was. He doesn't know other life than being a space ranger and he literally falls in a place where he doesn't know what is purpose is anymore. It's heartbreaking. And the music is the cherry on top. What a masterpiece is this movie.
Absolutely love these videos. It’s exactly how I feel when I’m learning a song which is like really satisfying to me. I love how Charles breaks it down so i can understand what is going on. And imma keep asking for a video on Skyward Sword so I can understand how on Earth the composers made the soundtrack so good. You can expect to see me asking again on the next videos lol.
