Hearing a Disney documentary where people candidly talk about how the producers forced them to make a movie they didn't want to make and what saved the whole thing was them saying "fuck that, we'll make the movie we actually want to!" I don't think that would ever happen these days

Saw Toy Story at a "pre-preview preview" in the UK where the audience was a bunch of animators, film makers and TV crew, months before it was released into the cinemas here. I was a kid and my Dad was in the industry so managed to nab two tickets to the screening. I can still remember the audible gasp of a hundred or so grown men as the film started and then the actual round of applause at the end. We all recognised on that rainy morning in the Odeon cinema, Union Street, Bristol that what we were watching was a revolutionary piece of film making and that 2D animation was almost immediately on the ropes.

As a 3D modeler in college this really feels like something special. Seeing the programs they used to animate and 3D model these characters and objects was REALLY cool. I had no clue they modeled an actual physical head for woody and buzz and scanned the verts in in order to model it. That was really interesting!
@partake7591
@partake7591 2 года назад
The 1970 film showcasing 3D generated hands was done this way. It's probably due to limited technology, they'd have to manually polybuild the models because there was no in program sculpting.
@chrismofer
@chrismofer 2 года назад
@@partake7591 definitely. early on there was no modeling or sculpting software of any kind, Ed used an early digitizing wand to manually enter points. by Toy Story their modeling software still wasn't as good as physical sculpting for smooth characters.

I was 15 years old when this came out on our screens. The coolest thing I ever did in school with a computer was code a robotic arm to pick up a pencil, move it and put it down somewhere else. I'm here because I am in college as a mature student and working on a presentation on animation and how it works. I am incredibly awe inspired by both 2-D and 3-D CGI animated movies because of the sheer amount of time and work that has went into it. I totally appreciate the art, the time, the imagination, the sheer volume of work - thank you animators, artists, voice actors, sound production, storytellers, composers, admin, etc etc. I watched Toy Story for the first time when I was a kid at the cinema and have a sense of how people felt back in 1937 when they first watched Snow White. The birth of these two styles of animation was never really done before on the scale it had been done at its inception and to see something that no one had ever seen before - you don't get much more wow factor than that.

Early concepts for Toy Story and Woody especially, really disturbs me. Woody's design and personality was so grotesque early on, and there were so many garish colours it feels like 'American Magee's Toy Story'. The way things mellowed out with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen and the cooler colour palette is like the greatest IP development ever.

I think Toy Story 1 and 2 are very liminal looking movies because, as far as it came with the CGI process, it's still got that sorta early CGI jank. The shadows aren't quite as sharp as you'd think they'd be, the lightings just slightly blurry, it's incredible but you know it's not quite right. It comes out in the afternoon scenes especially with those huge pink tones on the house. It's what the world looked like to you as a kid, that's even something the animators said. Even the animation sorta has it at times with Mr. Potatohead or Woody's laugh. Nowadays the CGI for Toy Story is basically photorealistic.

Ahah old woody had the same character type as the evil teddy bear in i dont know which one in the sequel. aha, that is funny. You know, Andy like's toys he can find, I love how the creators started out Andy's room and toy life as this struggle to survive and stay relevant. But they changed that around by the time of release, giving Woody the leadership arc, becoming jealous, fixing his mistake and learning throughout the process what it means to be a toy. By the final toy story movie, Woody managed to let go of being a kid's toy and stayed with Boo or however her name was. - Aha can't believe its been that many years, - Computer graphics have taken over the globe. And yes... Even today, Toy Story graphics are superb.
