Toy-Ventures this week looks at what we believe to be the greatest villain action figure of the 1970s and perhaps the best action figure of the decade as well.
Kenner's Maskatron, the robotic face changing robot from Kenner's Six Million Dollar Man toy line is a wonderful bit of toy magic when some licenses a property but takes artistic license (anticipate a callback joke) and sets out to also make a toy with tremendous play value.
Our magazine Toy-Ventures is available to order right now

Saxon was undervalued as a character actor. He's been in so many films I enjoyed -- Enter the Dragon, Battle Beyond the Stars, and at least 2 (probably 3) Nightmare on Elm Street movies. RIP. Today's the first I heard of him passing and it happened all the way back on the 25th this past July! Oh man, all the people I saw in the 1970s and 1980s are dying off now...

I mean seriously, Maskatron is hands down one of the greatest action figures ever made, especially in the 1970's. The amount of play value in this figure was massive. I mean yeah, I love Star Wars, I love Mego, etc., but man oh man the Six Million Dollar Man toy line was just phenomenally good. I still don't think this gets nearly as much credit as it deserves. Watching this video really makes me want to go play with them right now, lol.

I had a six million dollar man,it was my favourite toy,and played with it constantly ( made him fight action man),one day when I got home from school,to my horror I found my S.m.d.m completely chewed up by our dog, what didn't help was my Dad telling me " Sorry son, we can not rebuild him".

Maskatron is indeed a fantastic toy. So many play features without hindering the design of the character. No huge button sticking out of the back or any reduced mobility. Just great design. Got to love the various masks and I wish that they would have put out additional masks in an accessory set. My favorite toy of the line is the Mission Control Center. I used it with GI joe and while mostly made out of cardboard, it's just fantastic. Makes me wonder why toy companies don't use cardboard to make affordable playsets anymore.

Six Million Dollar Man tots were popular here in the UK too. I had Steve Austin, Oscar Goldman, Maskatron and the Bionic repair and transport station. I wanted the Bionic Woman doll too, but my Mum refused to buy it as she felt it was a girl’s toy. I recently managed to get another Steve Austin, Oscar Goldman, Maskatron and finally the bionic Woman I always wanted.

LOVE this! I was a kid back in the 70's and I indeed DO remember the buying frenzy when the Six Million Dollar Man action figure was released, even here in Australia... My mum had a very similar story to tell me every time she saw me play with that toy (which I did often) about how she risked life and limb to get it! LOL Maskatron was cool!!! Wanted him so bad but never got him, though I would play with my friend's one, (it's better playing with a friend anyway, because then one could set up whole TV scenes and stuff! LOL)

Maskatron was my favourite SMDM figure too! Btw, I 100% totally loved this episode; thanks for doing it, and I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the Oscar Goldman figure and especially his "exploding" suitcase. Thanks as well for showing two of the greatest Kenner SMDM commercials - they sure knew how to market Steve Austin and friends back then. The first is just hilarious for seeing Steve getting flattened as a guy by the car, then a toy figure and some glass being thrown in the back seat! Priceless! The Maskatron commercial stands out for me with the Kenner music, which just sounds brilliantly 70's, so appropriate. They just don't do tv commercials like these anymore. Part of the build-up to Christmas each year when I was growing up was looking forward to the various commercials on tv between the children's programmes on ITV here in the UK. The 70's / 80's were just fantastic each September - December period, leadiing up to Christmas day. Fabulous times...

I got this guy as a christmas present in 1982. My grandmother would get us “real” presents and then pad the UPS box they came in with all manner of clearance purchases she’d squirreled away over the years. I was a fan of the show, and it was a really cool toy... but I was born in 77 and the era of 12’ toys was long gone, so he didn’t get a whole lot of use, unfortunately.

This is how big Six Million Dollar Man was in the 1970's. My father who was 16 when this toy came out, bought the entire line because of just how fun the toy line looked. My grandmother certainly thought buying them was a waste of money, but she adored Lee Majors so I guess it was the only reason why they were not thrown out. He sold them to buy his house I grew up in. How much of a waste were they then? Lol

I still have my Maskatron from Christmas 1976, and recently I bought another one with the original box. Like you, I am very fond of Maskatron and have happy memories of playing with him, and my grandmother finding his loose parts under furniture. I have all of the Bionic figures, including the Lili Ledy versions, Dr. Kromedome, Robot Man, and the Fembot, that I didn't own back in the good old days. Kenner always made great toy commercials, and I've saved some of the Bionic toy commercials from RU-vid. And I just bought a DVD of Star Wars toy commercials.

So glad I stumbled on this video. I somehow had totally forgotten that if had this as a kid. Granted, I had SMSM from around ages 4-6 and then another Kenner line took over everything. Apparently even my memories! What is weird is when I first saw it I thought “no I didn’t have that” and then as I watched I started remembering in vivid detail each feature. Ah, Maskatron, he was awesome. I didn't even have to ask specifically for him that Christmas, my mother just knew! And my sister was thrilled when she got her own to fight Jamie Sommers in the form of the Fembot. She and Maskatron here quickly became partners in crime and high-tech terrorism. And ever since I saw your video on him, I do wish I'd had a Dr. Kromedome to be their evil scientist boss. But at the time it didn't matter. I wish that I could really name any other Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman bad guys other then the androids and Bigfoot, but as you say, most of them were generic spies and criminals. Kind of like that with The Incredible Hulk TV show too. TV budgets of the 70's wouldn't really allow for too many actual super villians for our super-powered heroes to fight.

a while later at a movie premiere Saxon Meet the Director of the episode and Jokingly said to him, "Thanks For ruining my career ! "In an interview He stated that he enjoyed doing Mister X and stated it Not often you get to play 2 different Characters in a movie or Tv Show. If you watch the Episode , while he doing Mister X, He speaks lines in monotone with no emotions.

I quite like all of them but Maskatron did stand out to me when looking up toylines, one quickly sees why Mego collectors have part wish lists heh. And if I didn't like John Saxon already, he also played a robot cool. ;) It's definitely a staple of the brand worth collecting, I watched a little bit of the show as a kid in syndication but my first look at the toys was probably Steve Carell looking through that eye piece in the 40 Year Old Virgin where I thought "What a great idea for a toy feature.".

Wow... My cousin gave me that figure when I was kid. I always thought was Steve Austin until day. Little did I realised that it was John Saxon all along. Incredible toy.
