I saw a 64 year old Toyah perform this (and many other songs) a couple of days ago, from the front row at a fairly intimate gig. She is still utterly amazing! A truly great artist. She's a lovely lady too, and came out to say hi afterwards.

As much as I love Toyah and a great fan, I still think the original by Martha and the Muffin was the best

I just discovered the joy of Toyah today, December 11, 2021. A friend shared the “I Believe in Father Christmas” video, and that led me to this. Now I find that Toyah made this amazing cover song of one of my favorite songs by my beloved Martha and the Muffins. I was ages 13-23 in the 1980s, a perfect age for enjoying new and fun music, but I missed Toyah back then.

I’m a huge fan of the Martha and the Muffins’ original, but Toyah totally nails it here. This is absolutely glorious (and I don’t think I’ve ever said that word on here before). I don’t know what it is about this track that grabs me. Maybe it’s because I came from a seaside town and have subsequently moved away. Maybe it’s because it’s so 80s. I don’t know, but I’ve always loved it. This is something to behold, IMHO. That sax break is absolutely fantastic and works so much better than the original in this song. It’s err … glorious? I can’t use the same word in the same comment, can I? Thank you, Toyah. I want to visit Echo Beach now… That “Echo Beach, far away in time…” lyric is so haunting to me. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s so good.

Back in the 80s I had heard Toyahs’ version of the song, and thought it was the original, that was until I recently discovered that original song was created by a band called Martha and the Muffins 😁👍🏾 Brings back 80 childhood memories 🥰

Toyah, so beautiful ❤ love her cover better than Martha's. But it took me some years to discover this was the cover 👍🏻

🔥 Toyah's voice was trained ahead of Minx at the RSC the previous year 1986. This was taken from the album Desire. One Man at her record company of the time forced her to include cover versions on both albums she hated the type of contract she was in at the time where she recorded her vocals & had no more creative input just handed them over saying Robert kept her sane. I'm very fond of both albums but all favourite material starts with Prostitute the next year & all brilliant from there to be honest 🔥

Considering that was five years ago in 2015, that’s bloody good. Toyah still kept the fitness up.
