From my fading VHS tape collection! Toyah performing Echo Beach on the Live at the Palladium TV show in 1987. This was a lyp-synched performance of a re-recorded version with the orchestra. Infamously one of the dancers catches Toyah's leg (instead of just the skirt) during the routine, ripping her tights. Toyah later commented that she was mortified and thought she looked like an old hooker! It was also very painful but she didn't let it show.

I think this version was recorded by the Palladium 'house band' purely for the performance to give a live feel, and think it was after the single's release. I thought she did a pretty good version, but it wasn't her choice to record it (Toyah was trying to be more experimental on the Desire album but the A & R men would only continue to fund the album if it had a hit single on it).

Does anybody remember the North Sea pirate radio station Radio Caroline? THAT is where I first heard this cover. In a different vein to the original, it's true, but pretty good in its own way. (And It's A Mystery will forever remain one of my favourite childhood tracks!)

It's A Mystery was a fantastic anthem. We all loved Toyah back in the day. She had attitude. And yes, Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg were what gave us hope that there was more to music than Val Doonican! Regards from the Emerald Isle ☘

The stage dance is sexy, but the vocals are exaggerated, making this version of the song just a mediocre cover of Martha and the Muffins' original.

I think Toyah sang it extremely well, though she did have to bend the sounds of 'work' and 'clerk' in the chorus to make them rhyme in British English. (Martha and the Muffins were a Canadian band.)

Spot on. Vocals aren't strong on this. Compared to the original her voice is thin and lacking depth.

can anyone confirm if one of the Dancers ..female was Cleo Roccos looks like her at 0.25 -0.26 seconds into this video. ps also can imagine Toyah going Ballistic at the wardrobe malfunction. I know I would.
