Toyota C-HR (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Toyota C-HR was designed based on C-HR concept, which debuted at the 2014 Frankfurt Motor Show. C-HR was designed in Europe, with European market in mind, but when executives from other markets saw it, they wanted C-HR as well. The Japanese designed a car, which looks bold from every angle, but remains practical. Toyota C-HR doesn’t look big, but it’s bigger than Nissan Juke, and almost as long, as Nissan Qashqai. Toyota C-HR is bigger than Citroen C4 Cactus, and about the same size as DS4 or KIA Niro. Or Mitsubishi ASX, which also has a bigger boot. C-HR boot has 377 litres capacity, just a bit smaller, than in Volkswagen Golf. Toyota C-HR is powered either by a 1.8 hybrid drivetrain from Toyota Prius or a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine.

Just drove this car for 7 hours into a winter storm and blizzard. If you know how to handle a front wheel drive in 8 inches of snow, this little car is a beast! It has done amazing on our trip. We love it!

My family just got the North American version which has a 2 litre engine normally aspirated and CVT. Everyone loves it.The handling is exceptional in slippery Canadian conditions. Yes, the rear visibility is impossible without the screen but that works very well.okay, it is not exactly a tire burning roadster but genteel. Toyota has a reputation for longevity and we are hoping for this. Egress and ingress is what sold us as one needs to be able to get into the car which some designers seem to forget. This car is a breeze for getting in and out even for an elderly passenger. Kudos. It is not available in Canada in an all wheel version which was disappointing but it has a lot of weight on the front and seems to have good traction. The interior is pleasant and front visibility is very good indeed. It is quiet and road hugging and apparently good in protecting people if in an accident. The front seats are exceptionally ergonomic and lots of leg room in front. I think it is a winner.

Picking up my C-HR next week after two long test drives during which I checked out every complaint in these reviews. I also noticed that the reviews from North America were far more critical than those from Europe. I am 80, wanted an ultra safe, small, easy to park, good finish, comfortable seat car. And this seems to do it. Very few rides with back seat passengers. I can tell my grandson that the windows are better than a plane's. And I will toss in 5 minutes behind the wheel so this3.5-year-old can play pilot. I floored the car to get on a highway bit I NEVER drive that way. Can't wait to get my own. Ten days, but who is counting.

Unless you have a 2018 model with the K114 from Turkey. Changed the CVT fluid at 30k miles. I hope it lasts longer than the average of 70k miles before the variator bearing starts to "hum". $10k to replace the K114 and torque converter is what the forums are saying.

Lot of people here have a lot to say, without even driving the car in question! My first impression on looking at the car was that of disappointment in terms of the dark and dingy back seat with small windows, reduced boot volume due to the excessive sloping rear window (form before function) and poor rear ward visibility due to the thick C pillar. It is actually quite a large car on the outside with daring new look. The look I can live with and even admire. After two days of thinking about it, I decided to give it a test drive. That is when a lot of things changed. I drove the mixed hybrid model with all the extras. The road stability is very good and the steering quite exact. Toyota has certainly improved the driving dynamics. Even at 140 kmph I could change lanes with full confidence. There was some roll tendency at the round abouts but acceptable on a high rise car. The brakes are very sharp. The standard safety sensors and the extras were very impressive. If it was not for the dingy back seat and the reduced boot space I would definitely buy this car.

Good review. My two pence worth...the C-HR is a pretty decent car. The hybrid massively over revs when under any kind of load, which is annoying. Fuel consumption is around 45-47 mpg rather than 70-75 mpg as claimed by Toyota. It's a nice car to drive but will hardly set the world on fire. The brakes feel a little soft and I have had a few moments when I have wondered if the car was going to stop in time but so far, touch wood, it's not let me down. Love the look, it's a real eye catcher. And the interior layout works well. At first I thought the tablet display would be obtrusive but it's not. You are right about the blind spots. Without blindspot detection, which works like a dream, I would have written my car off half a dozen times in the first week. All in all, I think it's a move in the right direction by Toyota.

@Marek: I believe these details are relevant to every vehicle, even at lower levels than expensive iron from BMW, Cadillac, Audi, Daimler-Benz undsoweiter.... You're 110% accurate - the C-HR is what we call in the USA a "little shit box" but good looking. (From the land of 2½ - 3 ton Ford F-150s and Chevrolet Silverados where I live, T E X A S) All cars steer, brake and roll down the road, How well or not well? Your video reviews are better than 95% of those done by Americans (who usually speak too fast, use too many words and CONSTANTLY say "um", "ya know" and "I mean")
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 7 лет назад
+Patrick De Haan Thanks. Let me put it another way: unless it is a performance car, I assume it generally handles sufficiently well for what it's been designed to do. I focus on usability, which is what I think really differentiates cars these days. However if there is a noticeable deviation from the norm (i.e. weak brakes, excessive understeer, wooly handling), I mention it.
@guyboomer5718

I have the 1200 turbo with drivers pack, (all security electronics, leather steeringwheel..) °: it's a very very good car... Nice design, good strong mecanics, good brakesystem, good steering, no mistakes , Audi/ Lexus workmanship all over The engine seems to be limited by pc till 20-25.000 kms to spare the mecanics ? after those km, the unit takes off nicely on gaz, before it's a mule.. not enough storage bags in mine 2017 ( no bag behind the seats as well..)

Just bought an XLE Premium for $21,173 USD - Ruby Flare Pearl (red). The car gets a ton of second-take looks and everyone wants to know what it is. It's incredible how many people here know so much about this car from watching just one review. The biggest complaint I see listed here is the visibility. In the US it comes standard (even the base XLE - not premium) with the lane-change warning system, so visibility is not necessary; the car tells you if it is unsafe to change lanes. It's got a lot of safety features and modern tech; 10 airbags, lane correction (if you drift from your lane . . . ), rear cross-traffic warning (for when you are backing in a parking lot), back-up sensors for parallel parking, parking-assist, auto cruise control correction (set it and it will follow the car in front at a safe distance - even at radically varying speeds and down to 1 mph; it will return to your set speed when safe to do so) - all standard. It also comes with auto-warning and braking if it senses an immanent front-end collision; and, in the darkness it senses pedestrians in your path if they are out of your headlamp view but pose a danger the car will brake for you (though you can override it). It also comes with a self-correcting paint that will reduce or eliminate minor scratches (if scratched, it releases a chemical to help "self-correct" (haven't tested this yet), heated seats, keyless entry and start (push a button to start - no need to have key to lock or unlock the door, self correcting windshield visor (automatically reduces sun glare), auto dim rear view mirror and many more standard features. There are almost no features you can add to the car other than a roof rack. They all come standard. The car even senses the key FOB in your pocket, so you don't have to pull it out to lock, unlock OR start the car. When you walk away from the car, it automatically locks it. Although the engine is small, it has plenty of get-up-and-go AND it gets an EPA 27-31 MPG. It's not a performance car, but it is not a factor unless you are insistent on driving like a fool. Under normal driving conditions it has plenty of power - even going up hills. I found a noticeable difference using the sport mode (more pick-up and stiffer suspension). The cargo area is huge for this class - and our 2nd row seats lie flat. Rear passengers can put their feet under the seat, adding about 4-6" of legroom. There is adequate room for two full-size adults in the back to sit in comfort (unless you're over 6'). If you regularly transport a basketball team, this car may not be for you; but for the rest of us, it's reasonably spacious. The interior is a mix of leather (steering wheel cover, shift nob cover and some small trim parts) and plastic. But the plastic is not that cheap hollow plastic found in crappy rental cars. All the nobs and interior parts have a nice solid feel to them. The seats grab you nicely and hold the passenger in-place when cornering (6-way adjustable for both front passengers). My only complaint is the cheap-feeling fabric. I bought a couple faux-leather seat covers that look pretty decent and will protect the fabric. Overall, I think we got a great price for a great car . . . especially being in the SF Bay Area. We negotiated pretty hard, playing dealers off of each other over the phone and internet. We paid an extra $392 for the red color, but that was for business purposes to match our logo. Even with that, the price for the XLE Premium was amazing at $21,173 - especially since the MSRP is around $26,000.

A few more features I forgot to mention (I'll just list them): 1. 18" alloy wheels 2. Auto-folding mirrors (when you park) for parking lots 3. Auto-dimming hi-beams (senses when a car is too close for hi-beams) and returns to hi-beam mode when safe 4. Telescoping steering wheel 5. Bluetooth connectivity 6. Voice recognition and integrated microphone/speaker 7. Dual climate control 8. Heated mirrors (premium) 9. Auto-parking brake set (sets brake when you park) 10. Auto-hold braking (when you stop at a stop light it holds your car place until you press the accelerator - no need to keep foot on brake That's a lot of useful features for a $21,000 car!

Hey Marek. You have a catchy way of reviewing, so this 10 mins passed quickly without me switching off. As for a C-HR, I find this a good looking car whose beauty one learns only after a lot of time looking at it. The Hybrid works well, but the best bits are overall feeling of quality combined with excitement, finally. Quality alone is boring, but with what this concept represents, I'm confident it turns itself into a well-selling piece here in Scandinavia.

One of, if not THE, best looking cars in this class. Going to test drive one soon and am really looking forward to it. The two common downsides are rear visibility and the navigation system. The navigation I don't really care about (I always use Google maps on my phone anyways and don't mind to keep doing that). The rear view visibility is something I'm a bit afraid of. With the amount of suicidal bikers in the Netherlands that might get.... Exciting... But still. It's fast enough for normal traffic. It has enough hybrid range for groceries. It has enough loading space for a camping trip and it looks absolutely amazing 😀

C-HR is assembled in Sakarya / Turkey. Backside looks like Honda, especially the taillights reminds me the Civic / Euro Civic.

> 300K views, nicely done. Keep up the good work Marek! If I can suggest to improve your reviews: you can perhaps show during review a simple graphic table with two columns: PROS & CONS, and list positives, nagatives, etc. This way it can be more structured / professional.

I just rented this car, huge blind spot rear pillar. I always feel there is a car in that blind spot. I double check all the time. i bottomed out the front end making a right turn out of a gas station. Funny, I was looking for the twelve volt socket and couldn't find one. My Compass has one in front and two in back. The gas mileage on the screen is 26.7, driving in Orlando, Florida. MPG is not as impressive as people are posting. The sensors go off if move over to the left turn lane and there are reflector markers. I changed lanes to the right and solid white line and the sensor went off. No cars around, so I assume it must be the lines in the road.

Good review, thanks Marek! I'd actually say you convinced me not to concider this car as it has no advantage whatsoever against my current Avensis. I guess my next car will be either KIA Niro or Hyundai Ioniq.

Canadian ones get the floor divider, but not the rearview camera in the obvious position of the tablet(?) screen - it's tiny beacause it's stupidly placed in the rearview mirror

Not a fan of SUVs but a great fan of Japanese science fiction so I think this car looks really nice. I love the cockpit, much better than the Peugeot 3008.

Center console is not even close to 3008 in terms of style and quality.
@AnthonyMcBazooka
@AnthonyMcBazooka 7 лет назад
I've seen both at Paris. IMO the 3008 console is a complete mess, a failed attempt to copy German cars with a touch of French abstract arts, while Toyota managed to create something absolutely homogenous with the style of the car which has a lot more individuality than the Peugeot cockpit.

I have a Honda Crosstour wich is something similar in nature and shape to this vehicle, but Honda cease making the Crosstour since 2016, but if they had pursue a kind of design like this, since it is A similar type of vehicle, it would have done well for them.

Andrew K, Northern Ireland I agree! I'm ignoring the haters. I know it's not the fastest but I like the design and how drives. Plus, I was going to get the Hybrid Version anyway which happens to be faster.

Thank you. People didn't like the Nissan Juke when first launched and yet it became a best seller because of its high riding stance and querky design..
@chrishuber8930
@chrishuber8930 7 лет назад
Andrew K, Northern Ireland it wasn't because of the design...let me tell you that. It was the driving dynamics, all wheel drive and turbo power plant. The thing is a rocket with the manual. With a tune and supporting mods it becomes a whole new animal

I have driven the 2019 toyota CHR hybrid in Europe its about 50mpg with light acceleration foot... And at 160kph about 100mph feels unsafe but ok tho .... Its very econmic car tho .... I didnt see Hybrid version in Usa tho i dont know why .... Europe hybrid version is 1.8L 4cyl about 120+ horses... Rear view is not best but ok backup camera helps a ton ... I rented the car for a month...
