Converting Water into its base components, Hydrogen & Oxygen, requires Energy. Then using those gasses to make Power (linear motion into rotary motion w/ a Heat Engine, aka an internal combustion engine) becomes problematic on Many levels. The Water to be converted into H2o & H2 needs to be filtered to a microscopic level (very expensive), because ANY mineral content in the water (lime, scale, rust), will gunk up any energy system used to separate it. Pure Distilled takes energy to produce as well. Water into Fuel is NOT easy as simple as it sounds. Hydrogen, H2, is Extremely clean and has a Very efficient energy quotient, BUT, it's also Very difficult to contain safely and for prolonged periods. Its Molecule is so small, it Leaks thru EVERYTHING, even Steel. Liquid Hydrogen is the Preferred Rocket Fuel for it's Energy Density (weight is Everything when launching to space), but it cannot be contained for very long. It boils off and leaks thru every Joint, Connection/Fitting and Weld and leaking Hydrogen is VERY dangerous in Atmospheric conditions. This is quite an undertaking by Toyota. I'd prefer to see Hydrogen Engines take over for Gasoline engines, the Enviornmental tradeoff would be World Changing, IF they can set up the infrastructure & methods economically & safely.

The real issue here, is how is the Hydrogen fuel produced and transported in a cost effective, environmentally frieldly way. It is misleading to hype the engine as powered by water, because it takes energy to split that water into Hydrogen, so it is not like you can pull up to a station and just fill up with a tank of water. Hydrogen can be created using electricity to split the Hydrogen atoms from Oxygen in water, but the amount of electrical energy required to do so far exceeds the energy from the resulting Hydrogen; There are Laws of physics to consider. Hydrogen production is like a rubber band, where you need to exert energy to split it from water to put in a state of potential energy, which can then expended when it combusts to turn back to water. But the process to do so if far from 100% efficient and you will never get back out of it all the energy that was put into doing so.

At the age of 78 the fuel future is becoming of less personal important than it will be for younger drivers. However, to me hydrogen is more attractive than electricity as a fuel. The biggest problem of course is the establishment of an infrastructure for its supply.

Toyota was spreading rumors on its solid state battery a few years ago. Where is their EVs with solid state battery? Then we had news about their hydrogen fuel cell cars and many know it is impractical because of the size of container needed to carry the hydrogen fuel. Now we have this piece of news until Toyota can come up with cars base on this technology that is commercially available for people to purchase, there is really nothing that we can say anything about it. It may be true but only Toyota itself knows. I have no reason to believe it based on their claim with both EV and Fuel cell cars.

There are 2 sources of Hydrogen. 1) Electricity is used to split the Hydrogen from H2O which is very expensive. 2) Hydrogen is made from natural gas which is much cheaper but still needs the fossil fuel natural gas or methane.

Hold on here, I believe Hydrogen can also be made with nuclear fission. From a Google search " Thermal decomposition of water. In thermolysis, water molecules split into hydrogen and oxygen. For example, at 2,200 °C (2,470 K; 3,990 °F) about three percent of all H2O are dissociated into various combinations of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, mostly H, H2, O, O2, and OH."

I still think biodiesel is the best vehicle fuel. We'll likely need the phosphorus in algae anyway, so collecting oil from algae is a value added option.

What doesn't make any sense about current common technology for all electric vehicles is, outside of the range problems for some and outside of the fact of adding strain to the electrical grid, is the chemistry of most of the batteries powering these cars also requires things to be mined from the earth so, is it really any better?

50 years ago I read about using metal anhydrides. A drop of water on them would produce hydrogen and this hydrogen could power the car. It was envisioned that once the metal anhydrides would be used up a door at the bottom of the car would open to drop the used up ones out and then put new ones in, like filling it up with gas.

It costs around $6 to $10 to recharge the batteries of an electric vehicle, depending on the battery storing capacity and charging stations. In comparison, the cost of fueling the hydrogen gas tanks vary from $75 to $125 depending on the fuel tank size.

Akio Toyoda was stepped down from CEO and replaced in April 2023, because of his reluctance to properly understand the EV revolution... Hydrogen is just not a viable alternative to petrol or electric, imo.

Water vapor retains heat, more than carbon dioxide and water vapor is a vastly, more abundant greenhouse. Gas then is carbon dioxide. Adding more water vapor isn’t going to cool the air from what I can see

The added unexpected advantage of the hydrogen combustion engine is that not only does it convert air oxygen plus hydrogen to water, but it also converts air nitrogen plus hydrogen to ammonia, which is a really great fertilizer as any Nebraska pharma can tell you. This would automatically fertilize airable lands around the world so that it would be easier for everyone to grow food 😊😊

Toyota my eye...Stanly Meyers designed the hydrogen motor and designed the fuel injections system that split the H2O at the point of combustion.

Hydrodgen is highly explosive : Using it as domestic fuel is very dangerous, because even a small spark can cause ucontrolled combustion leading to huge explosions. It does not burn at a slow rate. Transport of hydrogen is very difficult.

I believe sourcing H2 from homes, apartments etc on a many source level would make it possible to have a hydrogen engine being fueled at home by individuals. Electrolysis can be done by dispersed sources 24-7-365 where minor leaks might be insignificant and have the benefits from the sun, the wind sources and perhaps also geothermal sources powering the electrolysis. It would also be amazing if vehicles were made with solar panels on each vehicle and wind of the vehicle moving about also generating electricity and electrolysis of water.

I actually had a kit that you could put in old cars so they would run on hydrogen. You could buy them off the internet, the car could still run on gas but it could also run on water. The gas engine separated the hydrogen from oxygen the car ran on the hydrogen expelled oxygen out the back. I was sure this was going to take off 20 years ago but hasn't. I hope the time is finally come

Lemme guess, they probably stole the information from the guy in Ohio who had already built a functional running automobile from water. He died from a heart attack under very mysterious circumstances. I believe he was meeting with a local government official when he had his coffee and died from a massive heart attack

Toyota was talking big talk a year or two ago about solid state batteries. Big talk a few years ago about hydrogen fuel cells. I think I'll file this one in the "believe it when I see it" drawer. First, I'd like to see them figure out how to prevent the wiring for the rear axles of RAV4 hybrids from expensively corroding away. What they have proven is they know front-wheel-drive hybrids better than anyone else.

Maybe we should reconsider our first cars which like the T model ford that ran on alcohol. We had no gasoline stations. The T was a duel fuel vehicle as you just advance the timing for alcohol or retard the timing to run the low octane gasoline.

Toyota Japan and Tata Automobiles has a very similar history...just like Toyota , Tata company which manufactured Trucks was TELCO ( Tata Engineering and Locomotive ) company.....which over 70 years has now taken over Jaguar,land rover UK based automobile giant and now manufactures range of automobiles...both commercial, passenger to Defense

Remember the Hindenburg air ship burn out? Can they make a hydrogen fuel cell that would not burst into flames in a major vehicle accident? Change that question. Can they make it a safer fuel source than EV or Gas/diesel and give you the distance of them before needing to refuel? Then comes the lack of supply to support it.

Whilst I like to see alternative approaches to the reduction of carbon emissions overall, I also see a significant issue with sticking to 4 cycle ICE solutions. The automotive industry survives on the replacement parts supply demand and the cost of servicing. Of note is the massive reduction in mechanical servicing required by BEVs which offset the higher purchase price at the moment. Both Fuel Cell and HICEV require a totally new supply infrastructure - just as BEVs have faced and are now overcoming the issues. I'm not suggesting that HICEVs don't have a place in the overall solution but it may take a considerable time to build sufficient hydrogen production facilities to satisfy demand leading to "range anxiety" for these vehicles!!

Look at generated energy that makes it to the wheel of the vehicle. Hydrogen fuel cell - 1/3 the energy gets to the wheels vs battery electric. Hydrogen combustion engine - 1/9th the energy gets to the wheels vs battery electric. That means we'd need to build 3X the electricity generation for hydrogen fuel cells vs BEVs, and 9X the generation for hydrogen combustion. Hydrogen tanks for fuel cells take up so much room to get a decent range you can't have a center seat in the back, and there's barely no headroom in the back or trunk space. You'll get the same drawbacks with hydrogen combustion but now with 1/3 the range. Hydrogen equipment is more expensive to make and maintain. Hydrogen infrastructure is going nowhere again due to the cost. Hydrogen is multiple times as expensive as charging a BEV. Performance is lower than a cheaper BEV that has more interior volume and is lighter. Anyone who thinks hydrogen is the answer hasn't even started doing their homework.

So close but yet so far. Tip a combustion engine produces electricity via an alternator, Electricity fed through water produces hydrogen, Hydrogen can be used as fuel for a combustion engine.

The Toyota company engineers Still haven't solved the weight problem with the fuel tanks! There IS NO Advantages here!! Hydrogen can also be stored in a lightweight flexible bladder-type (shielded) tanks under the car!! Small boats or Dingees use these rubber fuel tanks all the time!!!

The only problem is the price of hydrogen far exceeds what most can afford and there are only a handful of fueling stations available. Developing the infrastructure to manufacture, transport and store H2 is going to take a while and lots of $$$$$$$$

Hydrogen power will require that a huge production and delivery infrastructure be built. Think about the current gas stations that took decades to build up and try to do that with hydrogen. Until that distribution network exists travel options will be severely limited. We already have worldwide power grids in place. The price of electricity is regulated. The price of hydrogen is not.

The discontent and confusion over the current EV push and the stalling of anything else like Hydrogen refueling stations are making the Oil companies laugh all the way to the bank! What this does not state is that Toyota's Mirai car fails not necessarily of the how it uses the Hydrogen to make electricity to run. But the fact that Oil companies like Shell and Exxon/Mobil promised and then backed out on the deal to help make refueling stations. Without the ability to refuel, the Mirai, Toyota is literally giving away the car. The same will happen with this new engine. Without any decent level of convenience to refuel, new technologies will wither away on the vine, before it can prove itself. The EV industry is getting this also as recharging stations really are hard to find outside of major cities and the few that can be found are being fought over by EV car owners as electric recharges take much longer than a quick stop at a gas station. Not enough spaces and charging stations along with governmental incompetence has already caused major backlashes in the advancement of such technologies. I personally feel that Hydrogen is a far safer, cleaner and more efficient means to replace our aging and polluting petrol technology. But hey, established money and power are what really makes the world go around.

This still doesn't solve the critical issue of all alt-fuels. User base and logistics. Electric had logistical support in place. Hydrogen is starting from day zero. Users are scared of hydrogen (See Hindenburg) id like to see it but i honestly am not convinced. A better bet is the "Synthetic Fuels" as produced by Porsche, these recover CO2 and therefore reduce the overall while using the existing fuel transport networks.

Couldn't you use H2O with a filter to remove the oxygen, and just release the oxygen into atmosphere , and inject the hydrogen into engine. , just a simple thought

I'm betting that Toyota simply made the decision to engineer something useful and long lasting - instead of the industry standard of baked in obsolescence. ICE engines could be significantly more efficient - the problem is that the oil industry would not sell as much oil. And the oil industry is in bed w/ the auto industry - god forbid some car maker releases a vehicle that gets 100-200 miles per gallon.

Using natural gas to make hydrogen is the cheapest way to go. Japan has a limitless supply of natural gas at the depths of the deep oceans near the country. Beats the hell out of using nuclear power to produce electricity and risk another nuclear accident, However, a liquid Florida nuclear power plant can't have a meltdown and could be an alternative. Bill Gates is building such a nuclear power plant in Wyoming. Another AI firm is building natural gas fuel cells for their new complex AI facilities in Washington State and in Texas. The future seems to be quite interesting.

Why have huge tanks of hydrogen onboard when there are devices that can spit the water molecule into Hydrogen and Oxygen on demand? Carry water which is non explosive, remember the Hindenburg?

Water powered cars won't be happening any time in my lifetime. Even if they did, water is becoming a scarce resource thanks to climate change. Using scarce water to power cars would be lunacy.

As long as the industry insists on building point-and-shoots, that deny drivers the kind of involvement that a manual transmission provides, driving will never be the same. With a MT, the driver must be aware of all the factors, engine speed, engine torque at various speeds, gear ratios and their effect on power, engine braking, grip as power is applied, etc., which is what makes driving fun. Eliminate that, and all that’s left is handling (which is fine, but bereft of engine and transmission control, the entire experience is impoverished). I will avoid automatic transmissions for as long as possible! Hopefully forever.

Just wait to water powered engines gain popularity! We'll be paying $30.00 per bottle for 8oz of water and for household water our bill will be in excess of $250.00 per month. Schools will have a credit card reader installed at each water fountain for the students to quench their thirst! But where is the end of the EV industry in all this? As it stands right now it's just an alternative fuel source. Don't they also have a carbon burning engine that extracts carbon from the air?

Day after day Toyota wished the end of EVs but the opposite is happening with sales of EV increasing & charging stations poping up everywhere making charging super convenient.
