Toyota timing chain replacement.
Here is a Toyota rav4 with a 2.5 engine. The car has a cold start rattle but goes away after the car warms up. It only does it in the morning or after the car sits for a few hrs. I replaced the cam gear to fix this issue. I also replaced the chain, timing guided, tensioner, sprocket, and all the gaskets and seals.

Good job on explaining the unlocked and locking procedure. So many videos don’t make it clear that there’s a specific way to lock these things.

My 2011 IS250 did the cold start rattle-of-death intermittently. I used the ATS 505 cro oil additive in the engine over 12 months ago. Keeping my fingers crossed, but have not heard the rattle since then. Could be just coincidence. I’ll keep monitoring. Good video

It is probably the vvti gear. Make sure that you change your oil every 5000 miles (8000km) and that it is always 80 -90% of oil capacity in engine. You can hear that on my Toyota when it stands for several days in the cold. My estimate is that the oil drains from the vvti and starts knocking because it is dry and it takes time for the oil to be injected and reach adequate oil pressure. If it quiets down after a few minutes, then it shouldn't be a big problem because it's all torn up a bit. When you change the oil, you can use Liqui Moly MoS2 as an additive. My Father in Laws RAV4 does this in cold start. I first noticed it when I started taking over the vehicles maintenance one year ago. We have put an additional 17,000 miles on it with that sound and the car sits at 145,000 miles right now this year will be the year i will either tackle this, or take it to a trusted Shop who knows how to replace this gear, even though I’m very much a DIY guy; I fear I don’t have enough experience for something like this

I just opened my old gear couldn’t find anything wrong with it, no broken parts, metals no even scratches, nothing indicating an internal failure 🤷‍♂️I do my oil change every 5k , using Mobil 1 synthetic EP, my engine is spotless, super clean I don’t get it ☹️ I’m finishing the cam gear replacement fallowing the Toyota TSB without taking off the timing cover, I’ll keep you updated, however I think this procedure is the best regardless time and work 👍🏻💪🏻

If you can see the color on the timing links, you probably don't need a new chain. See The Car Care Nut YT channel on this topic. He's a Toyota master mechanic. He says these are very durable chains that rarely wear out.

@BrianBalatbat 6 месяцев назад
I’ve never seen his channel but will check it out. Yes if the color on the chain is barely visible then that means the chain stretched or overheated. In this case, that’s what happened to the chain that’s why I replaced them. It jumped a tooth.

he also said that if u have the VVT rattle, then u must replace the chain even though the color is visible

Whoa ...big job for just a cold start. Have a 4afe engine with a bad cold start adjusted the IAC and clean it as well, via fine tuning it there is a twisting there in the screw. The rattle is there but starts one click unlike before you have to pump some gas.

This video would have been 100x best served if it also captures the replacement steps. The 201x Ford f150 trucks also suffer from this problem (cam phasers rattle on startup). The fix is to also replace those gears with newer parts.

What should something like this run me? Parts and labor..from a trusted small business owner that only work on honda and toyota?

Chain is fine they use special paint on chain links …if paint gone you need new chain . Paint was there so chain is ok .

what part number was the timing gear you used ?

i tried doing this job on my own and the timing jumped but i was able to put it back into time. however, i had troubles trying to make the crankshaft seal that sits on the timing cover itself, fit onto the crankshaft itself. the seal has a bearing that moves around so it was difficult to fit the timing cover back on with the bearing inside the seal moving around. how did you sit the timing cover onto the crankshaft?
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat 6 месяцев назад
Hi, I will upload a video on it soon I just have to edit it. You have to move that bearing around to fit right into the crankshaft. It’s a bit tricky. The flat side has to alight right into it.

Changed oil and filter on my 2010 Venza every 5-6000 km and at 190,000KM the cold start rattle began. Toyota in Canada wants $3500 cdn to fix this design flaw described in TSB 0041-13. TOYOTA reliability? I'm not sure anymore.
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat 2 месяца назад
$3500 is too much. Some local shops can do this job for around $1500.

How difficult is the whole process?
@BrianBalatbat
@BrianBalatbat 6 месяцев назад
It’s not difficult at all, just time consuming. Hardest part is getting the new chain aligned without the camshaft jumping.
